Pavis is quite possibly the best single setting for adventurers

This review has two parts, the first part is for people who are not familar with the fantasy world of Glorantha, and the second part is for people who are experienced Runequest players and are wondering how much of this material is really new.

If you are tired of fantasy worlds that seem to consist of monsters sitting around in rooms until the adventurers arrive, then Glorantha is for you! Glorantha is a large and very elaborate world that has been extensively documented over many decades. Unfortunately much of the material for it is scattered among many sources and is difficult to access. Glorantha was originally supported exclusively by the Runequest system and is now also supported by the Heroquest system. This supplement to the Heroquest system details the city of Pavis and the area around it. Pavis is quite possibly the best single setting for adventurers, as it allows GM's to run urban, rural, forest, riverine or dungeon adventures from a single setting. Pavis is a fully detailed city with information on neighborhoods, religions, guilds, political factions, trade routes and local law enforcement. Since the Hero Wars system doesn't require the large stat blocks that other systems need to describe NPC's, more space is available for background information.

The material could be adapted to support a Pavis based campaign that uses another RPG system, or parts of it could be used to support a campaign set in another game world.

I only gave "Pavis Gateway to Adventure" 4 stars because the production values are not quite state of the art. Most of the art is Black and White and for some unknown reason, much of the art is not captioned, which can be confusing at times.

Now for the part of the review that will only interest experienced Runequest players. Most of the material in this book originated in earlier publications. I recognized material from Pavis, Big Rubble, Sun County, Borderlands and Cults of Prax. The 4 adventures in the book appear to be completely new and it was nice to see old friends like Griselda and Wolfhead return. The older material has been given a bit of a facelift with some subtle changes from the original publications, for example Guilds are now more prominent and important then they were before. There is very little information on the Big Rubble, only an 8 page overview is provided. The maps are a mixture of old and new but are of good quality. The artwork is also a mixture of old and new and even includes a few pages of new color art, mostly to support one of the adventures.

The four adventures are an interesting assortment. The first one is really just an excuse to make a few firends and a couple of enemies in Pavis. The second one is an Indiana Jones style "The Lunars are about to uncover a powerful magic item, lets make sure they don't get it" scenario. The third one is a murder mystery. The fourth adventure is the most interesting, a true heroquest, in which the PC's are forced to participate in a Lunar ritual.

The book is set in the 1618 - 1620 timeframe. If you are looking for one item to introduce players to Pavis this book will serve nicely.

Very helpful for an NP student...

I am currently an NP student in the "Primary Care of Families: Pediatrics" course. This book is proving to be very helpful. It provides an overview of well-child assessment just as it is intended. It is not detailed (as the author clearly states), if you require in-depth information, you should be looking elsewhere.

The first section of the book provides information on techniques, screening, and assessment by body system; the second section covers assessment by age grouping and special issues like international adoptees, cultural assessments and sports physical examinations; and the final section covers procedures and diagnostic testing.

It is just big enough to hold itself open when you set it down on the table to read and small enough to carry in a large purse with you to clinicals (which I start next semester).

I highly recommend this book (I would purchase it again without blinking). I wouldn't mind if the author would consider an updated edition though :)

I would like to recommend another book that I have found exceptionally helpful as well:
Pediatric Physical Examination: An Illustrated Handbook

One more thing... this is NOT a hardback book like the description states... it is a "paperback" book.

Easy to read, good content

I'm a new grad PA who uses this book a lot during my first few months of practice in a family practice setting to review the various anticipatory guidance, developmental stages, physical exam findings, and more for all the different ages of well-child visits. Very easy to understand and gives practical tips for how to examine children, cover the important topics at each well child visit, etc.

Would recommend as a great book for students during peds/family practice rotations or for clinicians working with children in any primary care setting.

Why couldn't all his books have been like this?

Apparently Lewis didn't become disillusioned and embittered until after 1919, when this absolutely delightful book was published. We have an original copy that my mom got from a library sale or something. She loved it, I loved it, which is no suprise because I am a sucker for sweet old novels, but the most ringing endorsement it that my impossible-to-please dad loved it. In fact, he was the one who made me read it.
There really isn't a lot of substance to this book - it's mostly fluff. (There's some social commentary in the later parts of the book, when they're in Seattle, but I try to ignore it.) But it's grade-A, high-quality fluff we're talking about here. Claire Boltwood's transformation from a Brooklyn snob to a real woman is highly believable, and Milt Daggett is one of the sweetest, most wholesome men ever created. Set against the well-painted backdrop of the American West, the story shifts from amusing to heartwarming to bittersweet and back again flawlessly.
Just a good, simple love-story, unique and well-written. I would recommend this book to anyone just looking for a good read.

unpaved roads, flat tires and chasing that dream

Sinclair Lewis's FRESH AIR, published in 1919, is sheer, chuckling delight. It offers no great insights into psyches or interpersonal relations. Read it rather as a straightforward magazine serial pot boiler romance of frontier boy and car mechanic (Milt Daggett) pursuing a sentimental girl (Claire Boltwood) worth an impressive $5,000 around 1916. The girl, a high living Brooklynite, is driving her ailing workaholic father in a heavy Gomez-Dep roadster long day after weary day across northern plains and mountains towards a vacation with cousins in Seattle. She wonders whether she can ultimately avoid marrying Jeff Saxton, a notably older beau back in sophisticated New York.

Milt complicates things by falling in love with Claire after pulling her car out of a Minnesota mud hole created by a German hick to extort money from stranded motorists. Milt almost instantly decides to drive in his modest Teal "tin beetle" or "bug" with or near Claire and her father all the way to Seattle. And so it goes, with Claire wondering if she can (or should) civilize the manly Milt up to the level of suave and prosperous Jeff or whether that is too, too patronizing. Should she, alternatively, simply sweep off to Alaska with Milt -- heeding the call of the wild? Were Jane and Tarzan in the back of Sinclair Lewis's mind? For Edgar Rice Burroughs had created them only seven years earlier in 1912. No, the story takes another twist. Read the book and discover what this novel is said to be "prelude and curtain raiser" to.

FRESH AIR can also be read just for its sweaty heft as a part of midwestern and western America not long before the nation declared war on the Kaiser. On the drive through Minnesota, North Dakota, etc. to Washington state, roads are rarely paved. Gravel is luxury. Dust is daily. Mud is just around the bend. Tires are thin and frequently burst or are punctured. Steep slopes demand drivers with braking and gear shifting skills. And don't forget low spots covered by running water.

In every town where the Boltwoods overnight, they routinely drive their Gomez-Dep (a make apparently invented by Sinclair Lewis) into a sure-to-be-there full service garage for the night. These and other cross country garages often display a sign "Free Air," which must have been a reassuring come-on in the early days of cross-continental motoring.

The author, just one year before his first masterpiece, MAIN STREET, convincingly presents his personally experienced North American driving world from an expert mechanic's point of view: an automobile-crazed country with its starters, carburetors, rumble seats, dubiously effective head lamps, oil leaks, hitchhikers, fleabag hotels, country stores, a haunted house and country people who speak German and at first seem gruff but then are seen by sophisticated Easterner Claire Boltwood to have hearts of gold. As does her new suitor, Milt Daggett. It is an all-American world where even auto mechanics are romantic and knightly.

Boys and girls should read FRESH AIR a year or so before they tackle TOM SAWYER and HUCKLEBERRY FINN. One leads to the others.

Early, less profound Sinclair Lewis

One of my favorite books. I was lucky to get a copy (original edition) from the New York Public Library. Have read all his well-known books, but might like this best. His usual themes of Americana, social climbing, etc. But this is a "road" book and a very innocent love story - wonderful book by one of the best American writers. I'm surprised it's in print since it's such a minor title of his.

New edition retains strengths of the previous edition

I have taught two semesters of college level physical science from this textbook (7th ed.), and I think it continues to find the right balance between depth and breadth.

Tillery does a nice job of integrating four massive scientific fields (physics, chemistry, astronomy, and earth science). Given the ambitious scope of the text, he provides a nice introduction to each of these disciplines.

The book is carefully designed to be user-friendly. It contains answers to many of the end-of-chapter exercises. It also includes a large number of worked examples and practice problems throughout the body of the text. These features make the book useful for self study as well.

Most of the figures are well-designed; the careful illustrations and accompanying captions help make important scientific concepts accessible to a wide audience.

Overall, this is a solid textbook. Although physical science is a course which many students dread, this book gives them the opportunity to succeed. It is appropriate for anyone attempting to learn physical science at the introductory college level.

Excellent textbook for liberal arts science course!

Great
By air max
Good book for beginners to science. The math equations are explained well. There are a lot of examples to confirm what you learn. Great illustrations for driving home the concepts learned. If you ate a visual learner, this book is great.

Read and write Devanagari.

A very thorough book for learning to write Devanagari. Lots of examples of "real" script from signs and handwriting. I like that it doesn't have large empty spaces for me to practice writing on. I'm not paying for empty pages with lines, I can practice writing in a notebook. Great coverage of the conjunct letters. I chuckled when the author wrote that Devanagari was an easy alphabet, yet here he wrote a whole book to learn to read and write it! It's not super hard, but it has complexities.

Best book on plant propagation

Book contains 46 pages on introductory propagation methods, followed by very specific information on propagating these plant types: 44 pages on trees, 54 pages on shrubs, 64 pages on perennials, 16 pages on annuals, 20 pages on cacti, 28 pages on bulbs, and 28 pages on vegetables and herbs. In the back are a glossary, an index, and north america hardiness map. Very complete.
If you can grow it, the instructions are listed in this book.
Book contains hundreds of small, but helpful photographs that demonstrate a process or identify some plant anatomy.
Solid information, well worth the money!

Holy Cow!

I bought this book for my husband, but I use it more than he does! This is one of the best plant books I have ever seen. The techniques are easy to understand and follow, the pictures are outstanding, and there are TONS of plants listed! This book will take you through the history of plant propagation, genetic ins and outs, and the techniques that you can use in your own garden. If you have a garden full of veggies, or a yard with trees, shrubs, and rose bushes, this book really is a must for you!

This book delivers no-nonsense propagation wisdom!

This book is a must for anyone interested in the propagation of just about any botanical-from herbs to vegetables to exotics. As an avid seed collector and gardener, this book has been indespensable and reigns as king of my botanical library!! Ideal for the professional and lay person, this book explodes with beautiful photographs. Even the half-hearted gardener will dream of seed starting after studying this tome. The only thing I found missing was a chart for seed identification-but overall, this book was superb!! Kudos to the American Horticultural society for such much-needed knowledge! Even Sir Joseph Banks would be proud of this one!!

About the Author
FRANCIS WELLER, MFT, is a psychotherapist, writer, and soul activist. Please read this book and heed its call

I am a bereaved Mom, having tragically and unexpectedly lost my 23 month old son Hunter about 4 years ago. I have read A LOT of books on grief, dying, sorrow and loss, and The Wild Edge of Sorrow is among the best of the best. Weller's language is poetic, and his offering is really quite unique. He touches on all the many ways we all carry grief, with most of our grief and sorrow deemed unacceptable or unworthy by our society...and the ramifications of these dismissals....and why we need to change....
In Chapter 2 he references a retreat he held where there was a grief shrine and ritual, I was touched so deeply at my core by the description I wept and wept, for I had always hoped something like this existed - a place and a community where I could express my broken heart, wailing and weeping with wild abandon from that place inside that is drowning in sadness, but nonetheless remains mostly muffled....
This man is doing amazing work! We need to honor our grief, every single one of us. Please read this book and heed its call.

Blew my heart wide open.

Two years after losing my mum, six years after losing my little brother, nine years after losing the older of my two younger brothers, from a million mini losses & traumas to the big and very present one in my life (my marriage), this book found it's way into my hands. And into my heart.
I've been studying it. Digesting it. Living it. Honoring it, since I've opened it, a few weeks ago. It is s soul medicine, life changing, heart opening book. Francis Weller has written a masterpiece on the sacred work of grief. As he points out, we live in a grief-phobic, death-fearing society.
But I have news for you that you already know: Only a broken heart is capable of great love. He addresses not only our individual grief and sadness, but our communal and ancestral pain. As we live in these painful times, I found deep comfort in his words. It's full of gem after gem articulated with haunting beauty.
A few cases in point -
1. "There is some strange intimacy between grief and aliveness, some sacred exchange between what seems unbearable and what is most exquisitely alive."
2. "Grief and love are sisters, woven together from the beginning. Their kinship reminds us that there is no love that does not contain loss and no loss that is not a reminder of the love we carry for what we once held close."
3. "Grief is subversive, undermining the quiet agreement to behave and be in control of our emotions. It is an act of protest that declares our refusal to live numb and small. There is something feral about grief, something essentially outside the ordained and sanctioned behaviors of our culture. Because of that, grief is necessary to the vitality of the soul. Contrary to our fears, grief is suffused with life-force.... It is not a state of deadness or emotional flatness. Grief is alive, wild, untamed and cannot be domesticated. It resists the demands to remain passive and still. We move in jangled, unsettled, and riotous ways when grief takes hold of us. It is truly an emotion that rises from the soul."

A beautiful handbook on the healing power of grief.

In this exquisite book Francis Weller gives us insight and wisdom on how to navigate some of the most difficult aspects of our lives. As humans, we cannot escape suffering; to be alive is to experience loss in one form or another. Our society is saturated with grief and yet we are gravely lacking practices and places to process and express the sorrows that we carry. Weller reminds us that grief was never meant to be experienced in isolation and recommends that we find ways to share our heartache and sorrows in community with others. With a kind and compassionate voice, he asks us to have faith in the restorative power of ritual and to trust that in giving our grief the expression it deserves we will be guided out of the darkness and back into a world where we can fully experience the magnificence and beauty of our lives.

La edici�n 2009 del cl�sico libro del Prof. Henrich viene corregida y aumentada.
Si bien tiene casi el mismo n�mero de p�ginas que la edici�n anterior, la letra es m�s peque�a, hay m�s informaci�n, de suyo, m�s actualizada.
Conserva la claridad y amenidad que ya es conocida y que da cuenta de la excelencia editorial.
Los gr�ficos y figuras est�n bien dise�ados, ayudan a clarificar, a�n m�s, los conceptos.
El libro comienza explicando las caracter�isticas de la membrana de di�lisis, contin�a con los accesos vasculares, anticoagulaci�n, el modelo cin�tico de la urea, adecuaci�n, di�lisis de alto flujo, di�lisis continua, f�rmacos en di�lisis,peritoneodi�lisis, y despu�s, casi la mitad del libro, son los problemas cl�nicos de un enfermo dializado, a saber, hipertensi�n, problemas nutricionales, �cido base, hemostasia,di�lisis en el anciano, estudio de trasplante, medidas de calidad, etc.
En s�ntesis, un libro que en 752 p�ginas re�ne el conocimiento m�s s�lido sobre di�lisis, expuesto en forma amena y con una cuidada edici�n.
