Good but not earth shattering

This is an okay book if you want to explore a few new positions with your partner and become exposed to a few basic ideas of the Kama Sutra. Photography is good and descriptions are fine. Generally, if you havn't been very creative in the past then this volume may help a little. If you've been creative then I'd look elsewhere.

Sensual imagery add to the reading experience.

What expectations does the Kama Sutra hold for you? Myself, I had little expectations when I bought this book but I am pleasantly surprised by what I've taken away from my reading of The Bedside Kama Sutra.

The book illustrates 23 positions for pleasure and passion but you don't have to do all twenty-three to feel like you got your moneys worth.

First things first, this book is not an exercise guide to sex. If you buy this book to execute every move to a perfect climax you'll more than likely be disappointed. Beautifully illustrated this guide is a wonderful addition to any sexual/erotic personal library. Holistic in approach to the very intimate connection between two people this guide offers a unique incorporation of the senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell to help you create sensuality and to enhance your sexual experience.

Of course the positions are the main event but they are preluded by a section called "centre yourself" that helps you explore all your senses to maximize your personal experience. Once you've recharged or reclaimed your senses with the first section you can take a good look at each position in the book.

Each position is featured over multiple pages with step by step text to help you perform the position and multiple photographs illustrating the progressive movement with in the position. Also, there is written commentary to help you understand the position and aid to your understanding of what to expect from the position. Through out the book are translated text from the original Kama Sutra that gives you some insight into this ancient highly sexualized Indian culture. Many of the translated text cover topics that are controversial even today.

Personally, I enjoyed this book but I didn't use this book as your traditional sexual guide. I read the book and assessed my own ability and the ability of my partner. Once I did that I incorporated specific aspects from some of the positions that interested me. I'm not sure any one couple can perform every position with in this book. You must take into consideration your own physical ability along with your partners' ability and realize that many of the positions in this book require a great deal of strength and flexibility by both the man and woman.

One of the many reasons to purchase The Bedside Kama Sutra is the wonderful imagery created by the photographer, the two featured attractive models, and the sensual subject depicted with dignified class.

More Than the Average Kama Sutra Book

For those who are simply interested in "new positions" and don't care about the spiritual aspects of Tantra, I would suggest Tracey Cox's _Kama Sutra_. _The Bedside Kama Sutra_ is a step up in addressing the spiritual side of sex.

Throughout you will find many suggestions of doing yoga in order to really delve into what Tantra has to offer. This, I believe, is because of two reasons: first, because yoga will provide the strength and flexibility needed to even do some of the more acrobatic positions. Second, because doing yoga genuinely will allow you to become more present with your body and be more open to the body of your partner. A few of the positions are (put too simply) position, insert, and simply enjoy each other's presence without thrusting or orgasm (with suggestions to gently caress each other and enjoy the simpler aspects of sexual intimacy). As one other reviewer stated: this is hard work. It really is hard to work to be with the one you love, to be in the throes of desire, and to sit and rejoice in their simply being there.

In short: this book isn't just about how to get mind-blowing orgasms (though really working on Tantra can help with that), but about how to be present with your lover (with orgasm being one aspect of that closeness) and should be practiced in tandem with yoga and meditation (if they can be separated; many modern approaches to yoga often thinks they are separable, though more traditional approaches don't). My biggest criticism of this book is that this connection is still not explicit enough, though hinted at enough that the perceptive reader will notice it. If you are not willing to do the latter, then this book might not be what you're looking for.

This is an excellent book and I would highly recommend it for anyone wanting to further their knowledge of plants and the natural world. This book is not light reading and would be difficult without having had at least a college level basic plant botany and plant taxonomy class.

The book is divided into four sections: basic flower design and function, floral advertisements and rewards, that is nectar, scent, pollen, color and shape of a flower that draws pollinators. The third section is a little tedious if you have not had entomology, but it is fascinating. The fourth section covers floral ecology.

This has greatly increased my knowledge of flowers and how I look at them in the field, the insects pollinating them, the stamens, and how they mature. If you have had some science botany background I would highly recommend this book, otherwise it will be difficult to get through. The authors keep down the number of references in the body of the text that can be so infuriating to get through some science books.

Once again, you will never look at flowers the same after reading this book.

This is a very well organized book on pollination biology. It's well written, so that it flows well--not a struggle to make yourself read it. The illustrations are mostly very helpful as well.

Finally, after a very long wait we have the continuing but changing story of Banded Brothers - now with Dragons!

I have been waiting for this for ages. Really enjoyed the Banded Brothers series and this is a pseudo continuation of that. Aden Gale, scary Dad to his son and adopted shifter sons has met has mated. When the mating was completed with Gallen (a sorcerer with a psychotic father) Aden had a Dragon tattoo instantaneously appear on his chest - weird. When Gallen's father attacks Aden and Gallen a dragon appears and kills him. In a short time Aden sees another Dragon, this one is different.
Jiang is a Dragon who was petrified with his fellow Dragons at the behest of the evil Emperor in 215 BC. Well the Emperor wanted them eradicated, the head sorcerer only petrified them. Also there were some guardian foo dogs and fenghuangs. To be awakened when touched by Vampire blood and the resurrection of a Dragon King's line. It takes two thousand years.
Turns out Aden Gale is a Dragon King, the mating triggered the resurrection.
Jiang finds Aden and finds a leader, but is still seeking his Dragon brethren. He ends up in the house with Carey, Aden's son, his mate and most of the others from Banded Brothers. He also finds his mate, sort of. Kurtis sort of smells like his mate, and they are destined to share a room. Both feel the pull - the Dragon makes sure Kurtis realises they have until he finds his true mate, but in the meantime they can be together. Kurtis was cursed to be a pigeon by an ex with a mean streak - how to break the curse?
In the meantime Jiang and Aden are seeking the other Dragons and find four psychotic Chinese Phoenixes (the fenghuangs) that had been imprisoned with them and slowly went insane and who are going to burn down Seattle if they aren't found and contained.
It is all on in this book, ancient dragons, sorcerers that are over two thousand years old, the King of Dragon Kings, and ancient evil Emperor, evil spells, Dragon hoards and true love. What a story. Waiting for the next one.
If you haven't read Banded Brothers you may be lost, so I recommend you start with those. They are really enjoyable too.

In an interesting spin off from Ms. Kell’s Banded Brothers series, Protector of Dragons is a fast paced, action packed story that builds upon the world created in the original series and we get to catch up with past characters.

It’s Kurtis and Jiang’s story, although we spend a lot of time with Aden Gale and his mate as well. I really liked both Kurtis and Jiang, they’re both strong characters. I really loved the idea of a pigeon shifter and a dragon.

It’s full of magic, intrigue and I highly recommend it to fans of shifter romances that have a unique flavor.

At first I'm thinking, What? But slowly as the story progresses I get it. Still not sure where the vampire blood connected with the stone dragon. In the end the story was interesting and surprising.

Fine summary of theories of international relations

Way back when, I taught courses in international politics at Alfred University (in Western New York). This book was a nice resource, helping me develop lectures in a variety of perspectives on international relations.

The value of the book? It's description of an array of theories as to how world politics operates. Among the views: environmental theories, realist theory, systems theory, economic theories of imperialism and war, nuclear deterrence theory, integration, decision-making theories, and game theory. Other approaches, as well, are considered, but the preceding listing provides examples as to what this book considers.

In its day, this was a great resource, summarizing key theoretical perspectives in the study of international politics.

Eyal Winter is professor of economics and director of the Center for the Study of Rationality at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, one of the world's leading institutions in the academic study of decision making. He served as chairman of the economics department at Hebrew University and was the 2011 recipient of the Humboldt Prize, awarded by the government of the Federal Republic of Germany. He has lectured at over 130 universities in 26 countries around the world, including Harvard University, Stanford University, Princeton University, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Cambridge.

A tour de Force of Science and Humanities

This book is a synthesis of the humanistic study of human emotions, the economic theory of rational choice, the experimental evidence on human choice behavior, and Darwinian evolutionary theory. It is a deeply insightful, sensitive, and revealing book that completely justifies the notion that the humanities and the science each grows with the proper association with the other. This is not a self-help book, but if you are an aspiring artist or writer, you will learn much about human nature from this book.

Feeling Smart brought to mind for me one of Yeats’ most poignant yet enigmatic poems, An Irish Airman Foresees His Death. Here is how it goes:

I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love;
…..
Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,
Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,
A lonely impulse of delight
Drove to this tumult in the clouds;
I balanced all, brought all to mind,
The years to come seemed waste of breath,
A waste of breath the years behind
In balance with this life, this death.

We are told that we should make rational, deliberate choices, and the emotionality is the enemy of good choices. Make a list of pros and cons---balance all, bring all to mind. We are also told to follow our heart, to go for our dreams---Faint heart neuer wonne faire Lady. There is, in fact, a deep Aristotelian truth in the notion that wise choices result from an intimately intertwining of reason and emotion---which is why the young are all too often incapable of making wise choices, while the old are incapable of implementing wise choices.

Winter makes excellent use of laboratory game theory, which is a development of the past few decades that links the rational actor model to behavioral game theory in an effort to tease out the varieties of human preferences, reasoning patterns, and systematic strengths and weaknesses. But Winter always relates the results of experiments back to his personal experience and the larger humanist tradition. He also makes it clear that our emotions are the product of evolution. Some of our emotions are quite primitive, including fear and anger, while others, such at shame, guilt, and embarrassment are probably purely human.

As Winter shows us, anger can serve as a mechanism for creating credible commitment, enabling us to improve our strategic positions in interactions with others. … However, although anger is intended to benefit us from an evolutionary perspective, often it also harms us—not only because of the mental suffering that anger can cause, but also because of the implications it can have on our relationships with those toward whom we express our anger. We are often limited in our ability to control our anger in situations in which it does not serve us or even harms us.

Also, Winter shows us how in some cases, the evolutionary advantage of certain emotions can be overwhelmed by their disadvantages in the modern world. Blushing provides a very interesting example. Regret, which has very clear evolutionary advantages, is also an emotional reaction that can have negative effects, sometimes leading us to make suboptimal decisions. If we never felt regret for any of our actions, we would doubtless be quite miserable, doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

Winter concludes that the border delineating the twin spheres of emotional and rational systems is very thin and convoluted. In most of the occasions in which we are called upon to make decisions, whether those are monumental life-changing decisions or the most mundane, that border is liable to become so blurred that it may disappear entirely. The two systems become intertwined around each other so tightly that they become inseparable. In many cases our emotions are there to enable us to arrive at rapid and nearly automatic decisions, but in other cases, especially when weighty issues are at stake, our emotions challenge our rational thought processes.

Emotional Game Theory

A gentle introduction to evolutionary biology and game theory that describes decision making in negotiated interactions. Winter, a professor of economics and director of the Center for the Study of Rationality at the University of Jerusalem, begins with well known experiments such as "The Prisoner's Dilemma" and other variations, then adds new some new and sometimes counter intuitive conclusions inferred from his own research which factors emotions into determining estimated benefits and desirable outcomes.

The initial premise of game theory is that individuals who negotiate with each other will each prefer results that yield the maximum personal benefit, which in some situations will paradoxically result is the worst outcome for both. Changing the payoff or adding more rounds will change the results. Knowing that they will be rewarded or punished in future plays improve the chances of cooperation even if the participants know it's the final round.

Additionally players will consider the emotional resolve of the other player and their own, and they take into account what they consider to be the strategy of their opponent. One such strategy is "tit for tat", always imitate the action of the other player from the previous round. If both players cooperate then they will always cooperate, however if one player defects then the game continues with each player punishing the other on alternate rounds. Another is the "Grim Reaper" strategy where a player agrees to co-operate, but if crossed will never do so again, which, if believed, has the advantage of acting as a deterrent.

Non-rigorous in its approach, the book is peppered with intriguing insights on topics ranging from poker to dating and mating. Winter discusses the biological arguments for and against two (as opposed to 1 or 3) sexes, how herd behaviour influences one's last minute choices, why employers prefer candidates with degrees but investors like college dropouts, the problem of optimal selection of marriage partners in a group and how the same logic applies to the successful matching of kidney donors and why equitable performance bonuses will fail to achieve desired results. He also examines auctions where, in the spirit of competition, bidders will often pay much more for an item that it is worth. On the other hand in negotiations the party who displays anger and emotional resolve is more likely to walk away with the better deal, or walk away with no deal at all.

Overall quite an interesting read. Recommended!

How and why "it is the feeling and thinking person who has the advantage, not the person who relies on thought alone"

This book's subtitle suggests that "our emotions are more rational than we think." Major research studies agree that emotions have greater influence on decision making than we once thought. That is not to say, however, that emotional decisions are sounder than are rational decisions. We need both reason and emotion to make the best decisions. (Also, a human/computer partnership will almost always out-perform a human or computer but that is an issue to be addressed another time.) Eyal Winter observes, "Our emotional and intellectual mechanisms work together and sustain each other. Sometimes they cannot be separated at all."

So, why did Winter write this book? His purpose is to "point out how emotions serve us and further our interests, including our most material and immediate interests." He makes use of game theory and the theory of evolution to enable his readers "who may not necessarily be up-to-date with the latest social science research to join in the fascinating discussion that is taking place on the relationship between emotions and rational behavior. These are among the questions to which he responds:

o What is intellectual rationality?
o What is emotional rationality?
o Most of the time, which is more influential? Why?
o Why do we love those who hurt us?
o What are the defining characteristics of an "emotional impostor"?
o What is the "Prisoner's Dilemma" and why can it be significant?
o Does the threat of physical force increase cooperation in the world?
o Why is mistrust a self-fulfilling prophecy?
o Which mechanisms attempt to ensure physical survival?

For many years, I have been among those who make a distinction between enlightened and unenlightened intuition. With rare exception, people never have complete information when having to make an especially important decision. Consider physicians in an ER or officers in combat. Those who have prior training and experience are much better prepared to make a decision than those who don't. There must be a rigorous analysis of the given circumstances, to be sure, but what Eyal Winter characterizes as rational emotions must also be taken into full account.

I think this is what he has in mind when concluding his brilliant book: these emotions "are not a vestigial leftover of the evolutionary process from a long ago primitive past, but rather an effective and sophisticated tool for balancing and complementing our rational side. In the end, it is the feeling and thinking person who has the advantage, not the person who relies on thought alone."
