David Gillespie (Russian, U. of Bath) took up the task, choosing not to try to guess what innovations Wade had in mind. Better in the hard copy, but worth it even for the Kindle Version

This a very good Russian Grammar resource that I got for free in hard copy and then purchased in the Kindle version when the other one was "decorated" by one of my cats. While the Kindle version has a few printing errors (certain stressed Russian letters appear in a larger font then the rest of the letters in the word and there are (very few) typos), it is still worth the buy for the portability and I would recommend it if you intend to study it from start to finish. If, however, you need it as a reference book to pick up and look something up at random, the hard copy is a better choice since the Kindle, by its very nature, is harder to navigate (it does have a searchable Table of Contents which is a nice feature, but not a searchable index for specific words/ideas which would be great technology to have). In either format I highly recommend it.

An excellent Russian Grammar, but a disappointing Kindle version.

If I was just judging the content of the original work I would have given it an unconditional 5 stars but, once again, it seems the Kindle version is an inferior product because of the number of typos and transposed letters in the Russian text. In fact, I have not purchased a single book from Kindle that does not have typos, but this one is particularly annoying because a) it cost over $30, and b) for those learning a foreign language, it is rather important that the words you are trying to learn are spelled correctly! Also, certain Russian characters appear very tiny compared to others and are barely legible on the Paperwhite. Why is there so much less quality control for Kindle products than works printed on paper? I really don't understand this. Finally, could Amazon please develop a Russian dictionary for the Kindle so that students of Russian, like myself, can download Russian-language texts and look up words as we are going along?

Great Reference

This book is a must have for learning Russian grammar. It is very thorough with lots of examples. Each example in Russian has a full English translation. Every part of speech gets its own chapter that explains its usage in detail. There is also a workbook that accompanies the grammar book. Like most texts written for English speakers learning Russian, this text is written in British English. I had to Google some things like "gawper." Some grammatical rules are different between American and British English. As long as you don't mind that, this book is great. A must have for anyone learning Russian.

If you are really curious on torturing yourself you may try to read that 6 font size published book. Line spacing is the narrowest. There are also some hand drawings among sentences like brackets or arrows or underlined sentences which gives you an impression that as if that book was photocopied from a used one in the smallest font. Before ordering that book although I benefited from look inside facility I couldn't recognize how it was published. It is impossible to read it without a magnifier and pain in your eyes.

Award-winning sportswriter Albom was a student at Brandeis University, some two decades ago, of sociologist Morrie Schwartz. Here Albom recounts how, recently, as the old man was dying, he renewed his warm relationship with his revered mentor. This is the vivid record of the teacher's battle with muscle- wasting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease. The dying man, largely because of his life-affirming attitude toward his death-dealing illness, became a sort of thanatopic guru, and was the subject of three Ted Koppel interviews on Nightline. That was how the author first learned of Morrie's condition. Albom well fulfilled the age-old obligation to visit the sick. He calls his weekly visits to his teacher his last class, and the present book a term paper. The subject: The Meaning of Life. Unfortunately, but surely not surprisingly, those relying on this text will not actually learn The Meaning of Life here. Albom does not present a full transcript of the regular Tuesday talks. Rather, he expands a little on the professor's aphorisms, which are, to be sure, unassailable. ``Love is the only rational act,'' Morrie said. ``Love each other or perish,'' he warned, quoting Auden. Albom learned well the teaching that ``death ends a life, not a relationship.'' The love between the old man and the younger one is manifest. This book, small and easily digested, stopping just short of the maudlin and the mawkish, is on the whole sincere, sentimental, and skillful. (The substantial costs of Morrie's last illness, Albom tells us, were partly defrayed by the publisher's advance). Place it under the heading ``Inspirational.'' ``Death,'' said Morrie, ``is as natural as life. It's part of the deal we made.'' This book makes you think and is really powerful

This book is a best seller and continues to stay on the best seller list because in my opinion most people down deep understand the truth of Morrie's basic philosophy that people living exclusively in a materialistic world generally do so to replace what they feel is missing from their lives even though they may not be consciously aware, at the moment, of what precisely is "missing." What is missing ? I found part of this answer in a general sense in this book.

Within this story about the special connection between a spiritual mentor and his pupil, the old man imparts his wisdom his pupil regarding many troubling questions about human existence. This book along with the book An Encounter with a Prophet both present spiritual, not religious, answers to anyone open to truth.

A beautiful story about a horrific disease. May also consider pairing with More Time to Love, by Joseph Wions.

Tuesdays with Morrie is perhaps the best known account of an individual’s experience with ALS. It is a deeply moving story about Albums’ re-uniting with his beloved teacher and mentor, Morrie Schwartz, during Schwartz’s final months of life as he succumbs to the ravaging affects of the disease. The student relates how his teacher chose to use his illness as an opportunity to study how to die, but in the process, Morrie extracts lesson after lesson about how to live. This work is a heartwarming and heartbreaking tribute to a deeply insightful human being. It is drenched with wisdom and insight about love, life and appreciation. But it is also a story about a man who accepted the notion that ALS is inescapably terminal, and chose to derive something good from a bad situation.

For those interested in other stories about ALS, More Time to Love, by Joseph Wions, may be of interest. While Morrie and Joe offer some similar insights with regard to positive thinking and acceptance, More Time To Love is a story about transformation and emotional and psychological triumph, defying conventional wisdom, refusing to accept ALS as a death sentence, and searching for effective non-conventional treatment. Joe lived with ALS for over a decade, 3 times as long as doctor's gave him.

Life's greatest lesson? Dont bother adding this to your must-read list!!

I genuinely love the theme of this novel; a student, now in adulthood, learning life's greatest lesson from his ex-college lecturer. The narrative brings us through the last few weeks of Morrie's life as he battles a fatal disease. It has the potential to be brilliant, emotional, moving, touching - and life-changing! It fails. Morrie's lessons are no more than something one would read on a 'thought-a-day' calendar. We all know one must cherish, love - and live every day.
As someone who has battled a serious illness and survived, I provided similar advice to my loved ones and have come to understand the meaning of life and its frailty. I expected the lessons of life, in the form of this book, would be more articulately, and beautifully dealt with in this published story - it wasn't :(

Just right for a practicing professional

I needed to learn some complex analysis to understand some signal processing problems. It has been quite a while since I had a formal mathematics class, and while I will not stop with this book, I found that it takes a very practical approach, a bit like when I first learned how to use calculus. Rigor and detail is great, proper, and fine, but it is not a good way for a non-mathematician who is tasked with using a piece of mathematics to get oriented. I found it refreshingly straightforward.

Excellent Introduction to Complex Analysis

This is a great short introduction to complex analysis. It doesn't cover all of the topics that might be covered in a college course, but the topics it does cover it covers clearly and with many good examples. There are exercises, but not an inordinate amount;just enough to practice what the author is teaching you.

I reread this over the summer and I had forgotten how much I like this book. In fact, I wish I owned a copy of it the first time I took complex analysis.

One of my main complaints about technical books is ...

that they are too verbose, too much geared toward teaching everything to everyone (rather than teaching the basics to everyone), too heavy, and too expensive.

This little slim volume is in some sense an optimal solution to this problem. It covers the very basics of complex analysis in such a way that a typical engineering student
could read the book cover to cover in a short time and come away with a basic understanding of the field. The reader would then be empowered to read up on more specialized topics (e.g., the use of phasors, nyquist stabilty criterion, inverse laplace transforms)
or to apply the theory in an engineering class.

For comparison, I usually tell others that my favorite textbook on complex variables is the book by Wunsch. Although I still like Wunsch's book it has gotten fatter and thicker as it has morphed into
the current third edition. Its sheer bulk and scope might discourage the student from delving into the book who was not required to by taking a class.

Most engineers have to become "self-learners" throughout their career and books like this really help facilitate the process of lifelong learning.

Sound and two Blade Runners

I'm one of those picky people when it comes going to the movies. I always go early and only to specific theaters to make sure I get the best seat. I want to see a movie the way it was meant to be seen. After reading William Whittington's Sound Design & Science Fiction Film, I realized that where I sit is just as important if you want to hear the film the way it was meant to be heard. I've also gained an appreciation for what goes into how I experience a movie.

One of the most enjoyable parts of this exploration is that it focuses on my favorite genre, science fiction. It's a logical choice for experimentation and certainly technological innovation, after all, what does a alien, a light saber, or a pod racer sound like? Ask Ben Burt. It is up to the imagination of the designers like Burt to create the realities of that imagined universe. It's been 30 years since I saw Star Wars for the first time, but the sensation of the opening as Vader's ship passes, seemingly, overhead and onto the screen is still crystal clear.

While Whittington explores the development of the sound design through films like THX 1138, Star Wars, Exterminator II, Alien, and the Matrix, my favorite chapter is the one on the two Blade Runners, one of my favorite films. I have my own issues with director's cuts and though I loved the visual sensation, music, and the Sam Spade-like voiceover of the original 1982 version, I almost wish I hadn't seen Blade Runner until the director's cut came out in 1992. But, it's like the judge asking the jury to disregard the previous statement, it took some convincing for me to see how the basic elements of the story had changed.

Whittington goes carefully through both versions of the film and, skeptical the whole way, I had to re-examine my own memory of the story. Gradually I realized that not only were there two different stories, with basically different Decker's, but that the majority of the transformation comes from the sound design itself. Removing the voiceover and allowing the story to reveal, not explain the events, fundamentally changes the story and leaves open questions about Decker himself. Is he a replicant? Are his memories more real then those of Rachel? Those issues, unambiguous in the original version, are much more in the style of author, Philip K. Dick.

Okay, you may not be interested in re-examining your view of Blade Runner; the way I was. Apparently, I was one of the few people who saw it the first time out. But, if you are curious and enjoy movies, this book will give you insight on the changes in sound within the film industry and in how we experience that when we view films at home or in the theater. On the other hand, if you're one of those hopeful future filmmakers it will give you a broader perspective on the power of sound as an integrated element of film. As for me, I'll just have to make sure I get the best seat in the theater, and give this director's cut a chance.

Challenging and rigorous

I'm teaching "Sound Design in Science Fiction and Horror Films," and so was of course delighted when I came across this book. Academically sound and insightful, I had a sophomore the other day come up after class and say "I really like this book. I thought it was going to be boring, but it's really interesting." High, high praise. It's much more of a thematic, conceptual exploration than any kind of a "how-to" or even "how they did it," so if you're looking for information on how to create sound design for science fiction, this isn't your book. But if you are interested in examining, for instance, how in science fiction "the sonic landscapes begin to emphasize a greater uneasiness in relation to technology, scientific breakthroughs and the future" with some specific illustrations from movies like Alien, 2001, and Star Wars, then this book is for you. This is an area of study that could use a lot more books like this! Sound design studies, to the front. Next we need the same kind of treatment for Horror films.

Wrong numbering on several questions

All the questions should be choose A, B, C, or D; however just getting started into the book question 5 has A, C, D, or E and question 7 has A, B, D, or E. Makes it a little confusing to grade yourself and also whether or not the answers are indeed correct and not an artifact of some odd editing.

Clifford Pickover is by most standards a mathematics geek (Ph.D. research scientist for IBM, associate editor for two computer journals), but he is the coolest math geek you might ever meet. For this book he has compiled 30 chapters of mathematical puzzles (and one short story), all having some connection to the concept of infinity. These problems are open-ended; in the event that the reader actually solves the main puzzle, there are enough digressions, diversions, and tangents to keep even the fastest computer running for hours. Computer modelers will be happy to find that instructive BASIC and C language has been provided for most of the problems. Many puzzles have been previously posted on the Internet, and the best or weirdest replies have been included in this book.

If phrases like "Monte Carlo bootstrapping approximation" send you off the deep end, not to worry. These are not dry, dusty puzzles. A fascinating exploration of topics on infinity

*The book is a collection of fascinating, thought-provoking essays on
various topics which are not necessarily all concerned with infinite
topics. Some may be discussions of really big numbers or
mathematical constructs, but these may or may not necessarily involve
infinity.
*If you absolutely cannot stand math stuff, this is not your book.
Otherwise, it has a range of math from very simple to really
advanced. I just brushed over the very advanced math stuff that I
either did not understand or had long ago forgotten, but I didn't
really feel like I missed anything.
*There are a slew of amazing visually complex and striking graphical
representations of various advanced functions, etc. All are well
worth exploring, even if they do not directly involve infinite
concepts. The book is loaded with such graphics, a real visual feast.
*The math is rather advanced in some sections but is quite elementary
in others. Best of all, a generous collection of computer programs
is included which can be used to explore almost every chapter.
*There are a few "mystery" type things, but mostly it is just very
exotic, seldom-explored areas of number theories and other areas of
mathematics.
*The chapter on Vampire numbers is really cool, I thought. I have
seen them mentioned in posts here from time to time, now I understand
what they are and why they are so interesting
*The chapter on recursion has loads of really cool pattern-type stuff
that you can easily explore with a PC. A great topic.
*The chapter near the back of the book on random numbers and random
number generators is great background for some anyone interested in quantum theory. I had never seen the RNG cloud graphics before, what a
unique and ideal way to show the effectiveness of an RNG.
As expected, this is a great book, I heartily recommend it for all.

The one thing wrong with this book is that it's finite

This book is not just for maths nuts like me. Its for anyone who has a passing interest in the subject.

The author has in a crisp and concise wa,y managed to introduce, and in some cases explain, both the history and the solution, to some of the most mystifying problems to confront mankind in his infinite quest to understand the Ultimate Infinity - The Universe.

The cover notes suggest that the reader requires "no specialised mathematical knowledge " but you will need to understand some maths probably to GCSE level but then you would not buy, borrow or steal this book if you can't add, subtract, multiply and divide.

The computer programs that are sprinkled throughout the book do require a lot of thought and a good knowledge of the particular language, of which there are several, to make them work but, when they do, they demonstrate the beauty of maths as well as illustrate the ideas under discussion extremely well.

In all a very good read.

Whenever I attended a concert featuring one the composers comprising Les Six / Group of Six, being Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, George Auric, Louis Durey, and Germaine Talleferre, with "Les Six" being mentioned in program notes, I become curious about why and how such a cluster came about, whether they were assigned that designation by some critic or whether it was more internal. This edited book by music historian and biographer Robert Shapiro, who contributes most of the essays, will answer nearly everything any classical music fan would like to know. All these French composers were indeed chums, and while their particular music differed in experimental or conservative approach, they were dedicated to a new French direction that countered both fuzzy Impressionism and elongated Wagnerian and formal European styles. Most of their pieces at the start tended toward short chamber works. Their godfather was iconoclast Erik Satie and their Muse was Jean Cocteau. The book gives much biographical information along with music analysis. The back material is a treasure trove: besides notes, a chronology, the bibliographical sources, a listing of all their compositions, a thorough discography, a listing of their concerts between 1916 and 2001, and annotated reviews of some old magazine and newspaper articles and published letters describing concerts and premieres. I was already very familiar with Milhaud (who taught at nearby Mills College, where he instructed jazz pianist Dave Brubeck) and enjoyed the wit and charm of Poulenc, but I mainly desired to know more, well, anything about Talleferre. A woman composer in the music world at the time was a rare bird and surely the victim of prejudice. Her story, as the others, is insightful. The interaction and relationships of these musicians amongst themselves and with artists and dramatists and intellectuals are well described by Shapiro. This book will be of interest to classical music fans and historians. It filled a huge gap in my appreciation of these composers.

Robert Shapiro is an accomplished researcher and historian who has become the 'go to' expert regarding the life and times of the French group Les Six. This book is very comprehensive and is a must read for all music lovers. Bravo.

A Textbook Approach

This is as good an overview of "The Six" as you will find, but I still think there are areas where it could be better. On the whole, the book seems to be done up in a "textbook" style, with very dry analysis---which seems odd to me when you are describing musicians who were trying to break away from stereotypes.

I wish the book had given a better picture of the cultural upheaval in Paris near the time of WWI-- which seems to be the point and place where modernism first took hold. There is no discussion of the legacy of The Six, just a pass on that with a few lines about "still being evaluated, yet to be determined..." I know of at least one composer, Martinu, who traced his development to Paris and The Six. There also could have been more about Jean Cocteau and his importance to both the visual and musical arts. Some color-- maybe some paintings from the period---would have been nice. These were colorful composers, but the book is dull black and white.

Most of the readers who seek out this book will probably have their favorites among the number, and mine are Honegger (the 'architect', and the one who created a couple of great 20th century symphonies), and Poulenc (who seemed to be far and away the cleverest, most elegant, melodic, and fun--and was called the "French Prokofiev"--yes, that must be why I love him).

All the major milestones, both musical and historical, are covered scrupulously... for each composer, and the group as a whole. But the best way to understand the group is to listen to the music, of course.... and it wouldn't have hurt for the publishers to have included a representative cd.
