Originally published in 1976, it was first translated into English in 1982. Ernst Tugendhat was trained in the Heideggerian modes of phenomenological and hermeneutical thinking. Yet increasingly he came to believe that the most appropriate approach was from within the framework of analytical philosophy. This book grew out of that conviction, and as such it brought a fresh perspective to some of the rarely examined assumptions and methods of analysis. Professor Tugendhat begins by showing how semantic analysis related to such 'traditional' conceptions of philosophy as Aristotle's and Kant's, and the manner in which it treats such 'traditional' problems as being and consciousness. From these considerations he develops a systematic, thorough and original theory of reference, predication and individuation, which make it an invaluable resource for anyone with an interest in the philosophy of language.

Ernst Tugendhat is Professor of Philosophy at the Freie Universitat in Berlin.

P. A. Gorner is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Divinity, History and Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen. His principal research interests lie in the areas of Heidegger, Kant and German Idealism.

Ontology's Legitimate Successor

This great work was first published in 1976, in German.

Like Karl-Otto Apel and J�rgen Habermas, Ernst Tugendhat is steeped in both "continental" (Tugendhat's preferred term is 'traditional') and analytical philosophy. Tugendhat argues that the philosophy of language (as semantics of natural language) is "ontology's legitimate successor" (p. 31). This displacement of ontology by the philosophy of language also transforms Heidegger's account of human understanding: indeed, speaking about the Lectures in the preface to the 1992 collection of his papers, Tugendhat says that they "represent an attempt to take up in new fashion Heidegger's question concerning the unitary structure of understanding" (E. T., "Philosophische Aufs�tze" (Frankfurt: Suhrkamp, 1992), p. 12)).

Written in limpid prose, this remains the most systematic and historically oriented treatise on the (analytical) philosophy of language. Its account of the semantic behavior of singular terms is unmatched to this day. I also consider this work to be the most illuminating and fruitful attempt made so far to bridge the divide between the "continental" and analytical ways of philosophizing. This book is single-handledly responsible for ushering analysis into Germany and France, and many other parts of Europe (in France, it was reviewed by Vincent Descombes (see the reference below) before he published "Grammaire d'objets en tous genres" and by Jacques Bouveresse).

The work contains many discussions of Aristotle, Frege, Husserl, Wittgenstein, Austin, Strawson, Searle, and, to a lesser extent, of Heidegger. It should be required reading for anyone interested in the philosophy of language.

About the Author
Anthony Giddens, former director of the London School of Economics and a current member of the House of Lords, is a world-renowned social theorist who has written over forty books. He has written on just about every major topic in sociology but is best known for his work on modernization theory and globalization.

Mitchell Duneier is an award-winning urban ethnographer at Princeton University and the City University of New York Graduate Center. He is most famous for his book Sidewalk, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Duneier's research focuses on the urban poor and other groups in the margins of society.

Richard P. Appelbaum, the MacArthur chair of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has won several awards for his teaching and works mainly on globalization and labor issues. Appelbaum is the coauthor of Behind the Label.

Deborah Carr is a demographer and an active teacher at Rutgers University, where she regularly teaches the intro course. Her work focuses on sociology of the life course, aging, social psychology, and gender. Carr's latest book, Worried Sick: How Stress Hurts Us and How to Bounce Back, looks at how stress gets under our skin, makes us sick, and how and why people cope with stress differently.

This book is great. As well as an intro to differential geometry, it provides very personalized comentary on the whole of geometric literature. It's as if Mandelbrot wrote Hilbert and Cohen-Voss 's "Geometry and the Imagination." Great Bibliography.

I had a course based on this book in grad school and loved the book. It's a fascinating and intuitive exploration of geometry that actually uses our visual sense to help us understand shape, a big step forward from some other geometry books that somehow manage to avoid using images in their description of shape (?!).

A brilliant exposition

This book was, for me a non-mathematician with college level maths, a revelatory introduction to differential geometry. I've always had a interest in geometry since 1st year high school when I was introduced to Euclid's Elements, so I have a favorable mindset.

What I found so attractive about Solid Shape is that it gives a nice intuitive introduction yet doesn't forgo a more rigorous exposition. Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in differential geometry.

Easy to understand, concise, the images were very high quality and clearly labeled (I did notice the minor errors in labeling that the other reviewer noted- it resulted from using the same label key on two different images, on the first image #12 pointed to the right kidney, however, on the second image it pointed to the left--but really, would that confuse anybody? I'm guessing that most people can figure out which kidney is which.) I did not find any other errors (and I read the whole book, plus answered all the test questions). The practice exams were particularly nice. There is one in the book, but even better is the online exam. You sign into the publisher's website where they have an "exam simulator"--it's great! It automatically grades your exam (way better than having to flip to the back of the book to find the answers)and if you get any questions wrong, it provides a short explanation for the correct answer. This Exam Review book was great for just that (to review before taking the ARRT exam), but if you want more in-depth coverage of the topics you should also get the companion book from the same author. Both of the texts are great.

The place to start your CT prep work..you WILL need additional resources to get ready for the ARRT CT test...but this is a great place to start.
The book is well organized and presents in review format making it easier to navigate the myriad of material needed to pass the ARRT CT test.

an excellent reference

I found this book to be an excellent reference for CT exam prep. The author has a knack for making the most complicated subject easy to understand. I did notice the 2 errors the other reviewer noted but I don't think 2 mistakes negate the value of the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone preparing to take the CT exam.

A perfect combination of intellectual savvy, humor, mystery, and action packed adventure. Truely a new breed of literature.

Compelling

Hanstedt's writing style makes compelling use of the first person perspective. The frank candor of his character, Bueren, helps one to relate to the character, even if his values are less than laudable at times, and the voice Hanstedt uses draws his reader in, always curious to see what Bueren says or thinks about his situation.

The plot is interesting, and most of the book is a page-turner. The combination of mystery and action is captivating. The technological/philosophical foundation of the secret organization Bueren finds himself working for is refreshingly original and appealing to artists of the various mediums. It causes one to think about the balance of the maths and sciences that lead to our technological progress and the various art forms that add value to our lives. It will be interesting to see what other works this artist will produce as he progresses as a writer.

Ran into the author in Afghanistan a few months ago. After the book came up during a particularly loathsome lunch, I figured I would read it and contribute fifty cents to his economic well being. I was pleasantly surprised. Hadn't ever read anything combining art history, car chases and dames in short skirts.
