Reviewer: A reader from Reno, NV USA I used this book and found the questions to be very close to the type used on the MCAT. While there are a few typos I found this book a great way to review for the exam. Of this type of resource I found this to be the best one for OChem.

About the Author
Dr. Gilbertson did her undergraduate work in chemistry at Valparaiso University. She received a PhD in chemistry from Northwestern in 1994. She has been involved in teaching specifically MCAT science since 1996. She is currently undergraduate Laboratory Supervisor at Washington University in St. Louis.

Exam Style

This book is a hasty review of Orgo, but it covers most of the MCAT material in relatively small number of pages. Although some diagrams are not very helpful, it tells you most of what you need. It is basically a good book if you are a time-pressed pre-med trying to take the MCAT in 2 months. If you have more time, I recommend reading over your orgo textbook once more and doing problem sets in various other MCAT preparation materials (the ones with only MCAT style problems). Hope this helps.

President Dwight Eisenhower was so moved at the beating of veteran Alex Wilson that he ordered 1,200 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne to Little Rock, and he federalized the Arkansas National Guard to quell the "disgraceful occurrences." But how did it happen? Little Rock seemed an unlikely place for such violent hatred; it did not even see itself as part of the deep south and had voluntarily decided to integrate the schools. Essays by Bob McCord, Ernie Dumas, and Will Campbell chart the path leading to the crisis, as well as the impact of the crisis on the civil rights movement.Young Will Counts had only been with The Arkansas Democrat for about 3 months on that fateful Labor Day in 1957. Recently graduated from the Ernie Pyle School of Journalism at Indiana University he had been pleased to get a job with his own hometown newspaper, though he didn't expect to see much action. Little Rock, after all, was not a very large city, and didn't offer much opportunity to capture "the essential image," that elusive photographic ideal that distills an entire story into one magical image. And he knew that his preference for a small 35mm camera rather than the larger "news" cameras then in vogue meant his pictures would have to compete with those larger negatives preferred by editors everywhere.All in all, he was not expecting much from his first job. Governor Orval Faubus' surprise decision to surround Central High with Arkansas National Guard troops and prevent 9 black students from entering changed everything. The prospect of covering a major civil rights story in his own hometown was exhilarating. He headed for the school armed with a "blend-in" flannel shirt and his beloved 35mm camera. Three "Life Magazine" staffers: Francis Miller, Grey Villette, and Paul Welch found that their large cameras (and their coats and ties!) quickly identified them as outsiders. They were attacked by the mob (and adding insult to injury) arrested by the police. Will was able to move freely through the crowds and was accepted everywhere as a native son. Many feel that his photographs captured the essence of those dark days and he was unanimously recommended for the Pulitzer Prize by the photography committee that year." A Life is More Than a Moment" carries us back to those painful and turbulent times, but it does not leave us there. For more than 30 years these photos served as the foundation for Will's photo journalism courses at Indiana University. Goaded by the claims of a student that Central High was not better off for his efforts in 1957 Will decided to return to Little Rock and see for himself what impact, if any, the photos had. He returned to Central High to take a new series of photos and managed to find many the most important people in his original photographs. The world has often heard about the desegregation crisis at Little Rock Central High School in 1957-58, and many have wondered how such a conflict could have exploded in that small Southern city, which heretofore had been noted for moderation. The author reveals that only five days after the Supreme Court's 1954 Brown decision, the Little Rock School Board announced it would end the segregated school system. Within a year, the board adopted a plan to integrate in stages. Photographer and author Counts, who had just started working as a photographer for the Arkansas Democrat, one of the town's two dailies, presents here his recollectionsAand photographsAof the event that put Little Rock on the map in the worst light. In this spare and accurate account, he makes a case for why the tragedy might never have occurred were it not for a governor, Orval Faubus, determined to resuscitate a flagging career by playing the race card to the hilt. Counts relates Faubus's refusal to allow black students to enter Central High until President Eisenhower sent in troops to enforce integration; the next year, Faubus closed all the high schools for a year until a court order forced them to reopen. As a new photographer with the Arkansas Democrat, Counts was sent to cover the desegregation of his alma mater, Central High School in Little Rock, in 1957. His ties to the town and to the school helped him blend in and take stunning photos of the social upheaval that resulted when the nine enrolling black students faced virulent resistance by most white citizens, including the governor, Orval Faubus. The text includes interviews with some of the black students integrating the school, including Elizabeth Eckford, a black girl tormented by the mob. Among the essays is one by Hazel Bryan, who was captured by Counts' camera jeering Eckford in a photo that portrayed Bryan in that moment as the "poster child of the hate generation." Counts also photographed the fortieth anniversary commemoration of the race crisis in Little Rock. Counts returned to Central High 40 years later and with images from the late '50s he juxtaposes those from the late '90s: Eckford and her former tormenter, Hazel Bryan Massery, chatting amiably in front of the school building, black and white cheerleaders joining together at a basketball game, a popular black teacher leading an integrated class in trigonometry, black and white students graduating together in cap and gown. Accompanying essays recount the events so graphically illustrated in Countss photographs and put that fall day in 1957 in historical context. Great summary and big picture view

This book is a thoughtful summary of the events of the 1957 Central High Crisis, especially for those who don't have the time or inclination to delve into the details but want to know all about the history behind the crisis and the events at that time. What makes the book even more interesting is that the authors take you inside Central High School forty years later so that the reader can see the life and times of a academically successful and fully integrated CHS today. Of course, one of the greatest contributions are the photographs by the late Will Counts -- awarding winning photography that carries you back in time. I highly recommend the book for students over age 12 and anyone who desires an accurate account of this shameful yet historic civil rights event.

Dramatic Pictures, and hope for the future

Little Rock was the first time since reconstruction that federal troops had been mobilized top protect Blacks seeking to exercise the rights they allegedly won in the aftermath of the Civil War. The terror, hatred, and brutality of the times is searingly captured by the iconic photo which gives the book its title--of a young white student screaming, her face contorted, at an equally young black girl. Equally appalling is the other major picture which forms the center of this work--a series showing the mob attacking a black reporter, and beating him with no one willing to intervene.
While the book would be worthwhile for the pictures alone, it is all the more compelling by bringing the story up to date. Centered around the fortieth anniversary of desegregation of Little Rock High School, the author tracks down both the black student and the white student spewing hatred. There are pictures of them together, having gone through a process of healing and reconciliation.
The ultimate question--why such hatred--is not answered, nor could it be, given the format and limitations of what is, af4er all, basically a book of narrated pictures. But the question is certainly raised and explored.
This is a great book and should be on the shelf of anyone who loves photography or wants to understand why the Civil rights movement was so important to the history of this country (although I would strongly urge that no one take the advice f the other reviewer, and use this as the primary source for information on this struggle).
My only criticism is that the upbeat tone of this volume needs to be questioned. As James Meridith has said--If a black man can be kicked ten times in open view, and has no redress, is it really "improvement" if he is only kicked nine times, but still has no redress? Is Little Rock really free of prejudice and discrimination? Is America?

Dropped Back in Time---1957

I purchased this book to accompanying the book my high school classes are currently reading, "Warriors Don't Cry." As a high school teacher, I realize that students are likely to more fully engage with a novel when they feel they can truly relate to the story and when they are able to imagine all that is happening. "A Life is More Than a Moment" makes this possible! As we read the novel, I share pictures from this text with my students. They love this book. Often they ask to read this book even on their own, excitedly reporting their newfound knowledge with their classmates. I would definitely recommend this book for someone who is intersted in seeing the real thing.

everything else in her life is fine, just fine

People sometimes focus so much on what has happened that they can forget what the future may be if they could just get over it.

Gabriella de la Cruz had moved on from college. She was no longer the same girl that she was. In fact after taking a year of and being “volunteered” into a nanny role she actually has come away with a career she loves and a business she is proud of. So what if she hasn’t had a date in a while, she’s just picky, everything else in her life is fine, just fine.

Kingsley Buchanan never left the whispers or the stares, his reputation has stalked him since that one fateful night in college. Even though he was cleared through the law, he wasn’t cleared in everyone’s mind. Now with the 10 year anniversary of that night coming up and his son to think about all he can think about is how to clear this up and start his life in the clear.

Kingsley and Gabriella shared one fateful night in college and then everything got crazy, now almost ten years later could they actually put the past behind them and start again?

Ms. Garbera has created a really amazing story here. This is definitely the first of at least two novels that will have you on your toes throughout the whole story. What isn’t to like? A fast paced novel, murder, romance, a dad who would move mountains for his son, a strong female lead…. There is just so much to love and too capture the reader. This is one you won’t want to put down but may leave you frustrated if you don’t get the sequel right away because while there is a HEA for these two there is another story line dying to come out.

Good book.

Good second chance story with an underlying mystery. Ten years earlier, Gabi and King had been college sweethearts when he and his friend Hunter were accused of murder. In order to protect her, King said hurtful things, driving her away. Now King and Hunter are back in California, determined to find out the truth and take their revenge. King hopes that Gabi might remember something from that night, and hires her as nanny to his son to get her into his home.

Gabi has never forgotten her feelings for King, though she has tried to move on. She is nervous about having him back in her life, afraid of getting her heart broken again. But resisting King now is just as hard as it was before, and now there is the added appeal of his adorable son, Conner.

I liked King. At the beginning he comes across as a bit arrogant and way too focused on his revenge, but it quickly becomes obvious that there is a lot more to him. First, he is completely devoted to his son. Though he is haunted by what happened to him, his biggest motivation for clearing his name is so that Conner doesn't suffer because of it. Second, he feels guilty about the way he treated Gabi, even though he had done it to protect her. Part of the reason for getting her to live in is so that he can try to make amends.

I liked Gabi, too, though there were times when she frustrated me. Though devastated by her treatment by King, she had attempted to move on with her life. I liked her independence and the confidence she had built up in the years since she had last seen him. I really enjoyed the way that she stood up to him when he barged into her office. And though she tried to insist on keeping things professional, it didn't take long for her to realize that the attraction was too strong.

I really enjoyed seeing Gabi and King get to know each other as the adults they are now. The chemistry between them is still strong, but there is more than that. I liked that Gabi is still convinced of his innocence, and that she wants to help him with the investigation. King is appreciative, but he still wants to protect her from the consequences of being involved. She worries about his fixation on revenge and that it could have worse consequences that just letting it go. She got a better understanding of his motivations when she experienced some of the backlash of being involved with him, but she still wants him to give up on the idea of revenge, even if he discovers who the real culprit is. I hurt for them both as that need for revenge pushed them apart. The ending was sweet and romantic as King and his son join forces to show Gabi that love is stronger.

Conner is adorable and shown pretty realistically. He isn't perfect, and has age appropriate reactions and meltdowns. He is also the motivating factor for King's attempts to clear his name. I liked the way that it is through their relationships with him, that the softer sides of both King and Hunter are shown. I also liked what I saw of Hunter. He has quite a reputation with the ladies, but I get the feeling it is a front to hide his real emotions.

The mystery is an interesting one, with a theme taken right out of current headlines. With ten years behind them, both King and Hunter are now mature enough to pursue the truth. Though some new information is discovered it isn't enough and we are left waiting for Hunter's story to get answers.

A rekindled romance, and an adorable toddler

An interesting mix of romance, murder and mystery, and a really adorable toddler who pulls on your heartstrings.

Kingsley is the All-American hunk, a former football star, rich and successful in his family's business, and the widowed father of three year old Connor. He wants to prove he is not guilty of the murder of a college girl his best friend Hunter was dating----even though he and Hunter were said to be the last two with her when she was alive. He doesn't want the former, unjust accusation of murder to cast a dark shadow on his sons life. He reunites with his old flame, Gabbi, when he hires her as his sons nanny, someone he trusts to watch Connor as he pursues clues to find the real killer.

Gabbi doesn't want to work for the old love she has never forgotten, and finds herself still attracted to, but when Kingsley offers to finance a children's park she is negotiating, she takes the job.

Soon Kingsley and Gabbi are getting serious again, and Connor is crazy over Gabbi. While Hunter and Kingsley continue to investigate the clues, Gabbi and Kingsley discover they really are still passionate, both in lust, and in love. Soon Gabbi is helping investigate.

Connor helped make this story good, and is the reason I went four stars, rather than three and a half. It is a good story, but I found myself getting restless reading too many of Gabbi and Kingsley's thoughts, rather than dialogue. I found myself guessing at the truth about the murder, and rooting for Connors toddler skills, while I watched Kingsley and Gabbi reclaiming the love that was stolen from them years before. The mystery was not solved, as it is a series and there are more clues to be found.

A much awaited book, this is the latest comprehensive study of Ancient Egyptian materials, offering essays on subjects such as stone, metals, faience, glass, papyrus, textiles, leather, ivory, wood, oil, resins and food, and covering from the Predynastic to the Ptolemaic periods. Every chapter, which includes extensive bibliographical references, was written either by an Egyptologist or by a specialist of the subject; contributors include Janine Bourriau, Rosalie David, Joann Fletcher, Nigel Hepper, Salima Ikram, Barry Kemp, Geoffrey Killen, Paul T. Nicholson, Stephen Quirke, Ian Shaw and John Tait. Full illustrated, it also clearly explains the techniques used in the identification of materials. This is an excellent reference for every student and scholar of Egyptology.

The first real chapters to "The Old Man and the Sea". Read them together to understand.

Not Hemingway's best, but still Hemingway. I highly recommend reading along with Bruce Greenwood on the audio version. And finally, read "The Old Man and the Sea" immediately after you finish. It really is the last chapter of this book that was split off as a novella and won the Nobel prize. Once you realize that the "old man" IS Thomas Hudson, both books take on an entirely new meaning. Especially with the chapter about Hudson's son reeling in the lost fish in "Islands" as compared to Hudsons fight with the Marlin in "Old Man". It may ramble a bit in parts, but there is some true genius within. Trust me on this.

Always a great read, even after 100 reads

This is my all-time favorite book. I can read it 100 times and I'm always thrilled. Hemingway is a master. His descriptions of life and fishing in particular are intense and enthralling. The true mark of a classic.

David W. Gill (Ph.D., USC) is an ethics writer, educator and consultant. He served as professor of Christian ethics at New College Berkeley (1978-1990) and professor of applied ethics at North Park University (1992-2001). As an adjunct or visiting professor, he teaches Christian ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary and Regent College, and business ethics in MBA programs at University of San Francisco, and Seattle Pacific University. He is also the Director of the Mockler Center for Faith & Ethics in the Workplace at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He is a member of the Society of Christian Ethics, Society of Business Ethics, and Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. He is president of the International Jacques Ellul Society.
Gill has written or edited six books, including the two-volume introduction to Christian ethics, Becoming Good: Building Moral Character (2000) and Doing Right: Practicing Ethical Principles (2004). He often leads workshops, seminars and retreats for Christian students, faculty, professional and church groups, and he provides business ethics training and consulting services in the marketplace.

refreshing our cultural browser

I have been through this book several times now. Once I raced through it because I had to (course requirement). Once because I wanted to understand the material and the author's POV. Then, finally (and slowly), as I taught the material.

Ethics as a part of successful living is what David Gill does and this is his manual. His voice is dynamic, inspiring and equally challenging. There is no easy way to work through the Ten Commandments. One has to listen and be ready to take in all that they are. The upside of "Doing Right" is that Gill vigorously points out all that they aren't. As a people, we have pushed Exodus 20 into the realm of myth, fantasy and courtroom placards. Gill refreshes our cultural browser with his intriguing perspective and practiced contemplation of what "doing right" looks like in the 21st century.

What is more...Gill's knowledge and influence is not confined to America's latest and greatest theological brain trust. He will introduce you to European ethicists, Rabbinic teachings and a whole spectrum of voices who have thought, written, spoken and actively pursued the practice of ethical principles.

If you are looking to enrich your understanding of the Living Ethic informed through the Ten Commandments, this is your book. If you want to undertake an intentional personal journey into the land of right living, think of this as your map.

It's accessible, quotable, teachable and will do nothing short of jump starting much needed transformation, if you are wiling to do the work.

Doing Right

*** It is the contention of many, even many "good" people, in the post modern world that the Decalouge, the Ten Commandments, is outdated, written in a time when there was less grey area in life than there is now. Perhaps those contenders merely need the Ten Words of God to be explained to them a bit better. By taking each of them and expanding upon it to illuminate the meaning how it relates specifically to the modern world with its varigated problems that no one in the Pre Christian Sinai wilderness could have imagine, the author proves that the law of Moses is as timeless and relevant as it ever was- perhaps even more so. ***
