Great Text, Cover not as Pictured

Great text. Easy to read and understand. Very useful information for anyone dealing with someone who is dying. Focuses on all aspects, including family and friends of dying loved ones. *The cover does not look like the picture, if you are looking for the text that has a grayish color with a lady in a white dress wearing a sunhat and carrying a suitcase, this is it.*

Harlem of the West - The San Francisco Fillmore Jazz Era, by Elizabeth Pepin, Lewis Watts

Billie Holiday singing at the New Orleans Swing Club. Dexter Gordon hanging out at Bop City. Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane all swinging through town for gigs. Sound like a nostalgic snapshot from the New York jazz scene, or perhaps New Orleans? Nope. This particular sentimental journey describes San Francisco's Fillmore District in its heyday. The Fillmore in the 1940s and 1950s was an eclectic, integrated, and hopping neighborhood dotted with restaurants, pool halls, theaters, and shops many minority-owned and boasting two dozen active nightclubs and music joints within its one square mile. Although it has been commemorated in songs, poems, and in Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, few people today know of the rich history of the Fillmore and its musical legacy because it vanished abruptly and so thoroughly due to redevelopment in the 1960s. Through dozens of archival photographs and oral accounts from the neighborhood residents and musicians who experienced it at its height, Harlem of the West celebrates this unique and rediscovered chapter in jazz history and the African-American experience on the West Coast.

From Publishers Weekly
Mellow memories emerge in this consummate, tightly edited look back at an exuberant way of life in San Francisco's Fillmore District during the 1940s and '50s, when dozens of blues, R&B and jazz joints flourished amid businesses run by African-Americans, Japanese-Americans and Filipino-Americans. "The entire neighborhood was a giant multicultural party throbbing with excitement and music," remembers former Fillmore Auditorium manager Pepin. Art professor Watts and TV producer Pepin faced a difficult task when they set out to document the Fillmore's musical heyday. Few photos were known, and 1960s redevelopment left vacant lots. During a 15-year period, they explored city files and tracked former residents, and the resulting oral accounts by musicians and clubgoers make these pages an evocative echo of the past. Interviews led to photographic treasure troves, and although some pictures had "aged badly," Watts repaired damaged images with digital restorations. Researching newspapers, books and magazines, the authors stockpiled a mountain of memorabilia—including a map of neighborhood landmarks, 200 b&w archival photographs, ads, clippings, handbills and posters—presented here in a 9 1/4 x 7 3/4" format. The enthusiasm of the era bubbles forth, and fold-out endpapers of long-ago logos and signs provide a nostalgic closing coda. (Feb.)

Thanks for this wonderful book
By SEPhoto
I was getting my car worked on, and took a long stroll from Geary and Masonic all the way to Booksmith on Haight St. I stumbled on this book and was absolutely floored by the amazing photographs, the detailed interviews, and the comprehensive history of the long-lost Fillmore District in full flush. My mother worked in two of the clubs back in the 1940's: the California Theatre Club, which was run by family members, and the New Orleans Swing Room. My mother is 87 now and her eyesight is failing, so I had to read much of the book to her. She remembers all of it. People she went to high school, old friends and workmates. She saw Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Earl Grant, many of the greats before they got their big breaks. My father's submarine came in from the Pacific here, and he immediately started picking out names and faces. It was like old home week for them. The well-known and unknown musicians that made the Fillmore what it was. The book covers how much of this history was literally snatched from the dumpster, so intent were the city fathers on destroying this neighborhood. I remember the Fillmore from about 1968, before the now infamous "Redevelopment" made the Fillmore look like Dresden, gutting a vibrant yet neglected multiracial community. Period photographs fill the book, and contemporary interviews with those who were there flesh out the images - it seems that no one was left out. This is one of the best books I've ever seen about San Francisco, particularly the long neglected history of African-American San Francisco and a city that is, as we speak, vanishing and being replaced with a facade of what people think San Francisco should be like.

A keepsake for any who favor stories of the City's history and evolution
By Midwest Book Review
Fans of jazz music and the San Francisco music scene in particularly can't be without HARLEM OF THE WEST: THE SAN FRANCISCO FILLMORE JAZZ ERA: it charts the growth and evolution of the Fillmore District in its musical heyday in the 1940s and 50s, when it was known for its theatres, pool halls, and active night clubs packed within its one square mile grid. It's curious to note that nearly no details on this era or the Fillmore's musical heritage existed until this book's appearance - despite its commemoration in songs and poems. Archival photos and oral accounts from neighborhood residents and musician experience provide a blend of jazz and San Francisco history flavored with Afro-American cultural insights, making HARLEM OF THE WEST: THE SAN FRANCISCO FILLMORE JAZZ ERA a keepsake for any who favor stories of the City's history and evolution. Very highly recommended as a top pick.

great photos, intriguing history
By Suzette L. Davidson
This book is tops. Like wow, daddy-o. Really great candid photos of a lot of places that don't exist, now - and some that do. Some great interviews with folks who were there. I really like seeing how the clubs were not only places to gather for entertainment, but to hold parties and served the performers and the audience. It was a real community. There was a piece on NPR about this book that I missed and I'm glad a friend told me about it. Reminds me of the same energy that the documentary "A Great Day in Harlem" has - the stories behind the music, the social life and network of communities that come together to support live music and art.

Very Well Written!
By Kiwi Kenobi
It often seems like novelizations of movies are rather quickly and sloppily done, just a bare-bones description of what takes place in the film, and nothing more. But this novelization of The Mask by Steve Perry clearly had a great deal of effort and thought put into it. It expands so completely on what happens in the movie that it feels almost like the movie was an abridged adaptation of this novel.

What's more, I was skeptical at first as to whether the cartoony craziness of the film could be adequately captured in prose, but this novel pulls it off wonderfully. I highly recommend this book.

Exclusive interviews with the UN General Secretary, now in his second term at the UN. Only eight people have been privileged to hold the job of Secretary General since the United Nations founding in 1945. And only one of them has ever told the inside story of the UN while still holding that special office. That man is Ban Ki-moon, the veteran diplomat and former star foreign minister of South Korea now in his second term as SG. Because he understands that the UN is in crisis and because he fears the reasons for this are not widely understood he believes it is time to unveil the truth about the organization and explain why its failure would be a catastrophe. The result, via unprecedented conversations with American journalist Tom Plate, is a deeply revealing book about the kinds of issues and challenges whose resolutions (or lack thereof) will in fact determine the future of the world

Review
... I have very much enjoyed [Tom Plate s] previous Giants of Asia books .... Ban Ki-Moon ... is known to be candid about the UN s problems.... His conversations with Ban Ki-moon are equally interesting and informative. - Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger

This excellent and highly readable book by Tom Plate humanizes the head of the world's premier governmental organization while also reminding us what is at stake. Author Plate stands out among Western journalists. Not only has this former editorial director of the Los Angeles Times, syndicated columnist and Loyola Marymount University professor relentlessly chronicled the most important story of our era -- the rise of Asia -- but he has done so through his rare personal access to the key leaders in the region. Now, the latest in his series profiles United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon (whose) lasting impact on the world, not much covered by less far-minded journalists, promises to be immense. - Globalization expert and columnist Nathan Gardels in The Huffington Post

... American journalist and academic Tom Plate has been writing books called Giants of Asia. Now it is Ban Ki-moon s turn .... The formats of all the Giants books are ... built almost entirely on taped conversations .... But in this case the subject is different. In numerous interviews with Plate that moved from the secretary-general s residence to restaurants and clubs around New York .... Ban knew that he was not a glittering celebrity. In one of the most revealing passages in the book, Ban said: The first year, there were, I think, some misunderstandings about me (at the UN) .... But in the end, during the last four-and-a-half years ... I think they now understand, clearly, that Asian values are also one of the very important values, and cultures, which should be respected, and Asian countries ... they re doing well now. And that s why people have been saying that the 21st century will be led by the Asia-Pacific. --Former Polk Award Winner and New York Times UN Correspondent Barbara Crossette

This excellent book, which patiently uncovers the mind behind the image, shows that what the UN chief lacks in charisma, he more than makes up for in his dedication to the fate of the world's most vulnerable peoples.... This is what the South Korean UN chief has been trying to do since he took office on Jan 1, 2007 and was re-elected unanimously in June 2011 to a second term that will take him to the end of 2016.
Mr Ban's challenges are the motifs of Mr Plate's book ... a part of Mr Plate's Giants Of Asia series, which has featured Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, among others....In dealing with them, Mr Ban, a career diplomat who rose to become his country's foreign minister before helming the UN, is all too familiar with the grey areas that shade so much of international politics. He is accustomed to breaking bread with leaders of different political systems, but he draws the line firmly at assaults on the idea of humanity. The international community has to intervene when these occur, he says unambiguously --Asad Latif, The Straits Times (Singapore)

I have known Ban Ki-moon since we were both foreign ministers. I feel that I understand him even more now after I have read this unique book. The book takes the readers deep inside the inner thoughts of a man who has described his job as the most impossible job in the world. It also offers a rare look at the inner workings of the United Nations. This combination makes the book a must read for students of multilateral diplomacy. He is willing to take physical risks in remote parts of the world in his determination to improve the quality of life for people in need.
This book is not a public relations exercise for anyone. Tom Plate is a tough and experienced interviewer, with a gentle touch. --Professor Kantathi Suphamongkhon is the 39th Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. He is a Senior Fellow at the Burkle Center for International Relations at the University of California at Los Angeles UCLA

Inspiring Time Out with Ban
By TravellerThruKalpas
As the great Hammarskjold once said in regard to inhabiting the role of UN Secretary General: either you get very cynical - or very serious. This book offers meaningful behind-the-scenes interviews, conducted in 2012 by journalist Tom Plate, with the current UNSG in his second term, revealing someone who is not only very serious but clearly born for diplomacy, examples of which are plentiful throughout these talks. And while Ban is candid enough on most issues here, Mr. Plate's sometimes presumptuous remarks have a tendency to steer and push for something a bit more provocative than Ban wants to transmit, and is smart to avoid.

Throughout his responses, Ban displays much knowledge about the necessity of balancing policy and human rights issues with a heartfelt and humble perspective, inside a more demanding and rigorous arena of international politics, one increasingly defined by inherently problematic ethical prerogatives. But he brings something unique to these kinds of challenges, and displays a discipline and maturity rare among world leaders. In the discussion around his Asian cultural background, there emerges someone whose values were also conditioned by a life dedicated to public service in South Korean government and diplomacy. It soon becomes clear that for Ban, diplomacy is not just the art of skillful talking, as opposed to deployed action.

Importantly up front, Ban clearly understands the status of negotiation as crucial action in itself - in a world which has treated it as a weak or ineffective precursor to 'real' action - as when nation states, when not actively waging wars, also fund them directly and indirectly, or deploying various sanctions, in order to ostensibly benefit a sovereignty seen as perpetually challenged. In these exchanges the question of sovereignty does come up of course, since it is fundamentally built into the UN Charter as an important principle, and Ban once again deflects Plate's tendency to try pinning him down to obtain some glimpse of final resolution to the perceived problems of disunity within the UN. However, when Plate reminds him that the Westphalian prerogative of nation-state sovereignty has remained the same over time, in effect blocking action, Ban intriguingly agrees, saying that the "international community works normally on a consensus basis, whether it is a regional, small organization or large one. But the true meaning of consensus is that one or two different countries should not block a decision. Consensus should not be confused with unanimity."

But for member states to remain at the table - as long as necessary, to avoid going on to more embattled positions, including intervention - is a primary goal for the UNSG, and Ban Ki-moon shows he has the stamina serious enough for the enterprise. He says, "What I have is only moral power - moral authority and convening power, and raising an agenda." Also of apparent benefit is his lack of the requisite charisma to qualify for media attention, since the absence of such pandering and cynical hoopla can allow more space for focused work and accomplishment.

It is worth remembering that the roles of the UN and its SG are works in progress in any case, and are fully deserving of our support. And as this book makes clear, Ban's current record, which includes effective shuttle diplomacy as well as victory on women's rights policy making, will continue to evolve and impress. Also worth mentioning is the recently published volume of his speeches selected by Ban himself, which therefore provides a more direct indication of his work: Building a Better Future for All: Selected Speaches of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon 2007-2012.

A great book about a truly amazing leader
By Haig
If you want a very easy and light read about one of the world's most dedicated and determined world leaders, then Conversations with Ban Ki-Moon is without a doubt the book for you. The book is a dialogue between the esteemed scholar and journalist Professor Tom Plate and Secretary General of the UN Security Council. As you read through the chapters, you begin to understand the staunch attitude Ban has to the mission of cooperation not only between member states of the Security Council, but between all nations in the world. He knows he is no Superman, and he acknowledges that in his book time and time again, but he sure works like he is! When he's not in an interview or political social, Ban's on a plane to a country undergoing trouble of some kind to show that the UN will stand by them. If not that, he's reading speeches and resolutions for the United Nations in the middle of the night. It almost seems as though that Ban does all of this work because no one else will especially with the many conflicts of interest between the members of the Security Council. On the contrary, he desires support and cooperation between the member states and works to move them in the direction of cooperation. After all, his main motto is to "lead by example" which he does time and time again in his time as SG. The man is an inspiration. And as a student who desires to help in the process to alleviate conflicts at an international level, this book reinforced my belief that a man with a passion and sense of mission has no limits.

An English Major's Take on a Poli Sci Book
By Future Mrs. Lippert
I’m currently taking Professor Plate’s Future of the United Nations course, and this book is required reading. I’m also an English major who knows next to nothing in regards to political science. I took the class precisely because I wanted to know more about how the UN works. If you are like me and enjoy reading books that aren’t convoluted and dry, look no further. The title, “Conversations with Ban Ki-Moon,” is certainly not a misnomer. It reads as if you are sitting down having tea with Plate and Ban, yet covers a vast variety of subjects that go on every day at the UN. The last chapter in particular struck me so hard that I actually read it twice. In this world, many of the things we care about do not matter in the long run. One of these things for me is Hollywood gossip. In his last chapter, Plate recounts how Ban was nervous about speaking at an event for the stars. One of Ban’s aides reassures him by saying, “…When a Hollywood movie shows a scene where heads are blown off and blood is everywhere and bodies lie on the side of the street…and then the film’s director yells ‘cut,’ what happens? The actors get up, dust themselves off, take a shower, and go home. But in the movie that is the UN and its secretary general, that never happens. Those bodies never get up…to live and to act another day, much less go home…The difference is that ‘you are real and they are not and they know it and they will be in awe of you.’” This bit of dialogue made me realize that the real celebrities are the people who devote their lives to trying to make this world a better place. Thank you, professor, for helping me see why the world needs not only Ban Ki-Moon, but the UN as well.

One of the essential books on paganism by the Huffington Post!

The history of any religious movement can get murky. But the history of American Paganism--with so many invented lineages, so many solitary practitioners, so much resistance to staid definition, so much hiddenness--is especially hard to decipher. But here in Her Hidden Children Chas Clifton tells many never-before-told stories of the origins of Paganism and Wicca in the United States. The people, publications, and organizations that allowed Paganism and Wicca to set roots down in American soil and become "nature religion" are revealed in delicious detail. With a timeline, glossary, and photos of important figures, Her Hidden Children is compelling and important for any student of Paganism or American Religion. (The Huffington Post)

Chas Clifton has provided a foundational step toward the history of a new religion that is still in the process of emergence. He has brought forth figures, movements, and a constructive historical periodization of which future scholars of Wicca and Paganism will take note. (H-Net: Humanities and Social Science Reviews Online)

Anyone interested in exploring the scaffolding from which feminist Wicca launched itself would do well to delve into this thorough and well-organized history. (Anne Hill Gnosis Cafe Blog)

He does an admirable job of providing for the first time a formal history of the movement. His book contains a timeline, glossary, and bibliography, all of which enhance the book's usefulness. This book is highly recommended for undergraduate as well as general readers. (W. Michael Ashcraft Magic, Ritual, and Witchcraft)

Witchcraft is both scholarly interest and avocation for Clifton so he is well situated to trace its rise in the US...One only wishes this excellent study went deeper into the subject. Summing Up: Recommended. (CHOICE)

Her Hidden Children is a rare gem of contemporary Pagan history and ethnography. ...An important and welcome contribution to academic and non-scholar Pagans alike. (The Pomegranate)

Clifton does a masterful job in articulating how Wicca began as a tradition focused on fertility and mystery rites....Clifton includes a wealth of rich material throughout the book....Her Hidden Children, while possessing the precision and research expected of an academic work, maintains an approachable style that welcomes the lay reader. It is a work of critical significance to the community, and a must-have for any religious library. (Pangaia)

Simply the best single work yet written on the history of American Paganism. It is perceptive, intelligent, sympathetic and persuasive; tactful without sparing scholarly appraisal; personal without losing objectivity; and constantly engaging. It embodies a beautiful mixture of warmth and rigour, and deals strictly with aspects of the subject that can be appraised from precise data, revealing to me- at least- how much more of the latter there was than I had ever thought. (Ronald Hutton, Author of The Triumph of the Moon)

Chas S. Clifton's Her Hidden Children is a pioneering look at the history of Neopagan religions in the U.S. Written with the sensitivity and humor of an insider and the dispassion of an outsider, it traces the early development of one of the fastest-growing religious movements in America today, and its uniquely American use of the trope of "nature" to create its identity. This book should be invaluable to scholars of religion, American Studies, and the burgeoning field of Pagan Studies. (Sabina Magliocco, California State University-Northridge, and author of Witching Culture: Folklore and Neo-Paganism in America)

An excellent introduction to contemporary Paganism in North America, and required reading for those who wish to understand the growth and appeal of Wicca and Witchcraft in late modern society. Clifton writes from a wealth of experience as a modern Pagan, but with a critical and insightful eye that is so often missing. He has done stellar service to both the Pagan and scholarly communities. (Douglas E. Cowan, Author of Cyberhenge: Modern Pagans on the Internet )

Finally a history of American Paganism from someone who knows the subject inside and out! Chas Clifton has chosen with this book to lay down some basic parameters for talking about modern Pagan history in America. He has done yeoman's work here and should be highly praised. An essential book for anyone interested in our history, and how that history is shaping the future of modern Paganism. The bar has just been raised. (Jason Pitzl-Waters, The Wild Hunt: Religion, politics, music and culture. A modern Pagan perspective.)

About the Author
Chas Clifton is professor of English at Colorado State University-Pueblo. He is an editor for The Pomegranate: The International Journal of Pagan Studies, a peer-reviewed religious studies journal, as well as the Pagan Studies Series by AltaMira Press.

A history of American Wicca. Excellent book. Very well written. Clifton makes the "what happened before" accessable to even the casual reader. For those of us who wish to read actual history in addition to our mythical history this is a must have tome.

A Witch Without Her Broom
By Joseph R. Calamia
"her hidden children the Rise of Wicca and Paganism in America" by Chas S. Clifton, is a sobering study into the dark and often misunderstood world of "Wicca", and ..."the Craft."

The book is actually a very well researched text and would make a superb referral book to any college course in Wicca and Paganism in America.
The reality of Wicca's genesis and those who helped mold it's contemporary theology only serves to tarnishes the mystique of the subject matter.

I personally, would have preferred a more flowing "story-book" form of literary expressiveness. This would have allowed the reader to maintain just a wee-bit more of that "magical mystery." However, that thought alone is "magical thinking" and would have been unrealistic.

This is a very good chronological study and academic interpretation of
Witchcraft, and Paganism. Like most religions that have undergone years of transformation, the reader can only wonder; "Was there ever a real honest to goodness witch?"

Clifton's study shows the reader there are many brands of self- proclaimed witchs, but... none with a broom!

In my opinion, this is a 4-star book based on the deep caldron of superb information the author gives to his reader. It should be a constant companion to those who have an honest interest in the truth of religions and those who profess them.

Joseph R. Calmia
