Yogesh Kasat

Yogesh Kasat is a cofounder of Real Dynamics, which is one of the first Microsoft Dynamics AX IV&Vs (Independent Verification and Validation services provider). The goal of Real Dynamics is to help businesses and their internal IT teams to take their Dynamics AX implementation to the next level with independent and unbiased recommendations. Yogesh has led a number of large Dynamics AX implementations and turned them into success stories. He has a unique blend of knowledge of financial and supply chain modules, technical architecture, and business process optimization, and he has held project management, leadership, and solution architect roles. Yogesh is one of the founding partners of Real Dynamics―an organization focused on providing independent guidance and oversight of Dynamics AX implementations, post-implementation reviews, and help to customers in defining a roadmap for the Dynamics AX platform. Yogesh Kasat and JJ Yadav have distilled everything that someone needs to know as they are implementing Dynamics AX into 312 pages, and they cover everything from choosing a partner, to planning the project, from designing the infrastructure to migrating data. There are even sections in there on reporting and customizing Dynamics AX.

Microsoft Dynamics AX Implementation Guide covers the overall process flow of a Dynamics AX implementation project. In a limited sphere Yogesh and JJ have put together adequate information regarding Dynamics AX implementation project life cycle.

This book is bound to be effective for all Dynamics AX consultants and can be referred to during any phase of the implementation project. The real life project implementation experience that both of them have shared here is an icing on the cake.

About the Author
John Trimbur is a specialist in composition and writing studies, with interests in cultural studies of literacy and the politics of language in the United States and South Africa. He holds a B.A. from Stanford University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from State University of New York, Buffalo. Trimbur is the director of the First Year Writing Program at Emerson College in Boston. He has published widely on writing theory and has won a number of awards, including the Richard Braddock Award for Outstanding Article (2003) for "English Only and U.S. College Composition," the James L. Kinneavy Award (2001) for "Agency and the Death of the Author: A Partial Defense of Modernism," and the College Composition and Communication Outstanding Book Award (1993) for _The Politics of Writing Instruction: Postsecondary_. He also was a visiting professor at the Centre for Higher Education Development and a resident fellow at the Centre for Rhetorical Studies, both at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Authors Herbert and Barbara Apelian Beall are residents of Mineral Point, active in the Mineral Point Historical Society, and have completed several projects and publications in the fields of historic research and preservation-including architectural driving and walking tours. Both are currently professors and writers, combining these experiences with their knowledge and dedication to historic preservation, in order to create a pictorial history of the town that identifies itself as the place "where Wisconsin began."

How to read and write chemistry (for the university student)

This book is meant to be a practical guide in reading and writing chemistry. There are numerous practical tidbits interspersed throughout the book. There are also exercises (many of which include "peer review" style discussion among classmates) and numerous examples (both positive and negative). The topics range from reading the primary literature through writing lab reports and even to giving oral seminars.
The authors do a good job straddling the line between keeping the text short (this is a "Short Guide" after all), while providing the essential kernals of information. Unfortunately, it reads a bit like a how-to guide for someone trying to get an "A" grade in their "Writing in Chemsitry" course. There is little discussion of format variations (except possibly in the "Writing a Research Proposal" section) probably not the author's fault, more of a page constraint issue. However, I would like to have seen less on, say "How to keep a freshman lab book" (17 pages!) and more on, "How to give an oral presentation." Surely the target audience should be the upper-year student, not the freshman.
If the biggest problem is the formulaic presentation, the best aspect is the numerous examples interspersed throughout the book. I was pleased to note that the examples, at least, are chosen to highlight the differences in scientific opinion that constantly arise and that younger scientists find baffling. Because science is generally taught as hard facts in high school, there is no indication that science is actually a refining process where theories are put to the test, elevated, or destroyed as work is done to test their validity. This process is amply demonstrated by the authors, in a wide variety of subdisciplines, all of which are fun to read, even for professors and other chemical professionals.
Therefore, I recommend this book for the senior undergraduate and graduate student who wants to refine/develop their scientific writing style. I'm skeptical about recommending the book to freshmen, in spite of the number of pages devoted to freshman topics, because I'm not as happy with those chapters.

Writing About Chemistry

In A Short Guide to Writing about Chemistry Herbert Beall and John Trimbur describe how to write in chemistry. Beall is an expert in writing books about chemistry and Trimbur wrote books about reading and writing. With these two authors combined for one book, there was no doubt that this book would be a top seller. The book thoroughly discusses how to write research papers, literature reviews, critiques, persuasion essays, and lab reports. The book describes what chemists read and write about.
To understand chemistry you must find what is significant, make a model, and reason by analogy. The book describes how to read a chemistry textbook, study for tests or quizzes, and take lecture notes. All of these hints are good for a college student in chemistry.
The book gives step by step details as the chapter goes along. It gives good details for visual aids, and how to rehearse before delivering your speech if you have to do an oral presentation. The lab report chapter is very useful because it's not just enough to understand the concepts, but you must write out a lab report.
After the authors describe the steps to follow, they give an example and then practice problems. The book includes websites to look at for a chemistry article and good engines to use when searching for a certain chemistry concept.
The book covers so much information that any student at any level of study can understand the book. The book is designed mainly to get the students to communicate in the chemistry language either by writing, reading, or giving oral presentations. With all of the great things found in this book, it is no surprise that it was successful at helping students and professors alike in writing about chemistry.

About the Author

Alan R. Kemp is Professor and Chair of the sociology department at Pierce College, Ft. Steilacoom, Washington, where he teaches a course on death, dying, and bereavement. He holds master's degrees in social work and divinity. He earned his doctorate at the then amalgamated colleges of St. Stephen's and St. Andrew's in Edmonton, Alberta and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He has many years experience in teaching, ministry, and professional counseling. He is a licensed mental health professional. He was among the last American advisors serving on "Swift Boats" (PCFs) in Vietnam. He lives with his wife, Claudia, and a menagerie of "critters" at their cabin on property in rural western Washington state.

Mellow memories emerge in this consummate, tightly edited look back at an exuberant way of life in San Francisco's Fillmore District during the 1940s and '50s, when dozens of blues, R&B and jazz joints flourished amid businesses run by African-Americans, Japanese-Americans and Filipino-Americans. "The entire neighborhood was a giant multicultural party throbbing with excitement and music," remembers former Fillmore Auditorium manager Pepin. Art professor Watts and TV producer Pepin faced a difficult task when they set out to document the Fillmore's musical heyday. Few photos were known, and 1960s redevelopment left vacant lots. During a 15-year period, they explored city files and tracked former residents, and the resulting oral accounts by musicians and clubgoers make these pages an evocative echo of the past. Interviews led to photographic treasure troves, and although some pictures had "aged badly," Watts repaired damaged images with digital restorations. Researching newspapers, books and magazines, the authors stockpiled a mountain of memorabilia—including a map of neighborhood landmarks, 200 b&w archival photographs, ads, clippings, handbills and posters—presented here in a 9 1/4 x 7 3/4" format. The enthusiasm of the era bubbles forth, and fold-out endpapers of long-ago logos and signs provide a nostalgic closing coda. (Feb.)

I was getting my car worked on, and took a long stroll from Geary and Masonic all the way to Booksmith on Haight St. I stumbled on this book and was absolutely floored by the amazing photographs, the detailed interviews, and the comprehensive history of the long-lost Fillmore District in full flush. My mother worked in two of the clubs back in the 1940's: the California Theatre Club, which was run by family members, and the New Orleans Swing Room. My mother is 87 now and her eyesight is failing, so I had to read much of the book to her. She remembers all of it. People she went to high school, old friends and workmates. She saw Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Earl Grant, many of the greats before they got their big breaks. My father's submarine came in from the Pacific here, and he immediately started picking out names and faces. It was like old home week for them. The well-known and unknown musicians that made the Fillmore what it was. The book covers how much of this history was literally snatched from the dumpster, so intent were the city fathers on destroying this neighborhood. I remember the Fillmore from about 1968, before the now infamous "Redevelopment" made the Fillmore look like Dresden, gutting a vibrant yet neglected multiracial community. Period photographs fill the book, and contemporary interviews with those who were there flesh out the images - it seems that no one was left out. This is one of the best books I've ever seen about San Francisco, particularly the long neglected history of African-American San Francisco and a city that is, as we speak, vanishing and being replaced with a facade of what people think San Francisco should be like.

A keepsake for any who favor stories of the City's history and evolution

Fans of jazz music and the San Francisco music scene in particularly can't be without HARLEM OF THE WEST: THE SAN FRANCISCO FILLMORE JAZZ ERA: it charts the growth and evolution of the Fillmore District in its musical heyday in the 1940s and 50s, when it was known for its theatres, pool halls, and active night clubs packed within its one square mile grid. It's curious to note that nearly no details on this era or the Fillmore's musical heritage existed until this book's appearance - despite its commemoration in songs and poems. Archival photos and oral accounts from neighborhood residents and musician experience provide a blend of jazz and San Francisco history flavored with Afro-American cultural insights, making HARLEM OF THE WEST: THE SAN FRANCISCO FILLMORE JAZZ ERA a keepsake for any who favor stories of the City's history and evolution. Very highly recommended as a top pick.

great photos, intriguing history

This book is tops. Like wow, daddy-o. Really great candid photos of a lot of places that don't exist, now - and some that do. Some great interviews with folks who were there. I really like seeing how the clubs were not only places to gather for entertainment, but to hold parties and served the performers and the audience. It was a real community. There was a piece on NPR about this book that I missed and I'm glad a friend told me about it. Reminds me of the same energy that the documentary "A Great Day in Harlem" has - the stories behind the music, the social life and network of communities that come together to support live music and art.
