Finally!

Written in a very logical, straightforward way, with just the right amount of pathophysiology, allowing for learning rather than memorizing. Sections are divided and subdivided so that you can easily find exactly what you are looking for - if not the entire chapter. The pathophysiology and treatment sections are what separate this handbook from the others I have bought during residency (Ferri, Wash Man., Pocket Med). I was initially skeptical as I already spent way too much money on handbooks, that for the most part never see my hands. However... this one delivers. It is an all-encompassing handbook - by that I mean that for its size, it relates the most information in a very user friendly format. Treatment is in depth - with the entire book being high yield for both the medicine wards and USMLE exams (I wish I had this for my medicine booards). I have never written a review, but this book deserves it. Like one of the other reviewers stated, this is the best available - getting my highest praise and recomendation. Upon becoming a chief resident next year, I will ensure that the entire residency class is aware of it. Yes... I like it that much. Trust me in that so will you. Enjoy.

A personal touch

I rotated on Dr. Rosen's medicine team during my third year ICU rotation. It was the greatest rotation I ever had. This guy loves medicine. All the medical students and residents tried rotating onto his team because he was so passionate about teaching. He loved to sit with us and simply field questions if we were having a slow day. He was also all over every aspect of each patients care. Definitely meticulous. His book is an awesome compilation of his teachings. It is as though I have him in my coat pocket whenever I need him. I love that. This chubby handbook is everything you need on the wards. Diseases discussed and broken down extremely well, with everything actually being explained rather than simply stated. His method of delivery is to break things down by effects on organ systems. The book also serves as an excellent guide to the treatment of those diseases... being basically a pharmacology text as well. Its an excellent read.

I have come to love this book. Really easy to follow - with a nice outline format. Covers the major wards topics very well. Very nice pharmacology sections with mechanisms etc... so serves as a constant reminder of what you are prescribing - really a good blend. I can honestly highly recommend this book.

His Decisions Are Out There

Gary Klein is a cognitive psychologist who has "gone native," shifting his focus from the laboratory to the messy world of firefighters, tank commanders, and other naturalistic decision makers. Their work environments are defined by "...time pressure, high stakes, experienced decision makers, inadequate information, ill-defined goals, poorly defined procedures, cue learning, context, dynamic conditions, and team coordination." Instead of cataloging their errors, Klein has identified the mental capabilities that help them succeed. His book presents these "sources of power" for our consideration.

These sources of power include:

- Intuition depends on the use of experience to recognize key patterns.
- Mental simulation is the ability to imagine people and objects through transformations.
- Spotting leverage points means spotting small changes that can make a big difference.
- Experience can be used to focus attention on key features that novices don't notice.
- Stories bring natural order to unstructured situations and emphasize what is important.
- Metaphors apply familiar experiences to new situations to suggest solutions.
- Communicating intentions in a team helps members "read each other's minds."
- Effective teams evolve a "team mind" with shared knowledge, goals, and identity.
- Rational analysis plays an important role, but can be over applied.

The author spends some time with other theories of decision making, emphasizing both their strengths and the sometimes faulty assumptions they incorporate. He makes good points about the inadequacy of decision bias theories to explain successful, real-world decision processes. Klein describes how artificial intelligence and other computational theories reduce decision making to a search through a well-defined set of alternatives. Most decisions, he argues, are not so well structured.

Klein likes to stay close to his data. The book reflects this in the space given to detailed decision making examples he has used to develop and test his theories. In addition to a traditional Table of Contents and lists of Tables and Figures, there is also a list of fifty-two Examples, allowing readers quick access to these cases. Klein also links his theories back to decision making contexts he expects readers to encounter. Each chapter ends with an Applications section that identifies practical implications for decisions out there in the world.

This is a thought-provoking book, grounded in both applied research and practical experience. It is profitable reading for anyone who strives to make better decisions.

This is an insightful book, exploring how we make decisions. Remember the old Ben Franklin approach? Two columns on a piece of paper: One column is headed reasons to decide yes and the other why we would not make the decision. Whichever side has the most entries determines our decision. Others argue that humans use a rational calculus to make decisions. What are the costs and benefits of any decision?

There are any number of perspectives on how humans make decisions--rational choice theory, heuristics and biases, the evolutionary toolbox, incrementalism, and on and on. This book adopts something like a naturalistic decision-making perspective.

Klein's book talks about how we make decisions based on his study of actual decision-making--whether by firefighters or military personnel. His focus is "naturalistic decision-making." It provides a useful alternative view on how people make decisions. He notes factors that help define such a situation--time pressure, high stakes, unclear goals, inadequate information, poorly defined procedures, and the like. Despite such challenges, people with experience tend to make pretty good decisions. This book addresses why and suggests how all of us could make better decisions.

I am not completely convinced by the argument, but the author does a nice job of laying out his viewpoint. And it clearly adds to the discourse on the subject of decision-making.

Fine book. Not the easiest read, but it makes a useful contribution.

Whether intentionally or not, Klein rebukes the attitude of indifference (and sometimes outright disdain) that some organizations, and perhaps society at large, exhibit with respect to experience in the work force. This extends even to the practice of deliberately shedding experienced people (on the grounds that they become "too costly"), replacing experts with "cheaper" novices who, in their turn, will be replaced by novices at just about the same time that they become worth what they're paid.

"When Scottish scholar of the Russian language Wade (1930-2005) died, he was well advanced in plans but not actual work to update the grammar that had been highly successful in its 1992 and 2000 editions. David Gillespie (Russian, U. of Bath) took up the task, choosing not to try to guess what innovations Wade had in mind. Instead, he consolidated and added a few new sections, careful to preserve what he believes to be already the best Russian grammar available. Better in the hard copy, but worth it even for the Kindle Version

This a very good Russian Grammar resource that I got for free in hard copy and then purchased in the Kindle version when the other one was "decorated" by one of my cats. While the Kindle version has a few printing errors (certain stressed Russian letters appear in a larger font then the rest of the letters in the word and there are (very few) typos), it is still worth the buy for the portability and I would recommend it if you intend to study it from start to finish. If, however, you need it as a reference book to pick up and look something up at random, the hard copy is a better choice since the Kindle, by its very nature, is harder to navigate (it does have a searchable Table of Contents which is a nice feature, but not a searchable index for specific words/ideas which would be great technology to have). In either format I highly recommend it.

An excellent Russian Grammar, but a disappointing Kindle version.

If I was just judging the content of the original work I would have given it an unconditional 5 stars but, once again, it seems the Kindle version is an inferior product because of the number of typos and transposed letters in the Russian text. In fact, I have not purchased a single book from Kindle that does not have typos, but this one is particularly annoying because a) it cost over $30, and b) for those learning a foreign language, it is rather important that the words you are trying to learn are spelled correctly! Also, certain Russian characters appear very tiny compared to others and are barely legible on the Paperwhite. Why is there so much less quality control for Kindle products than works printed on paper? I really don't understand this. Finally, could Amazon please develop a Russian dictionary for the Kindle so that students of Russian, like myself, can download Russian-language texts and look up words as we are going along?

Great Reference

This book is a must have for learning Russian grammar. It is very thorough with lots of examples. Each example in Russian has a full English translation. Every part of speech gets its own chapter that explains its usage in detail. There is also a workbook that accompanies the grammar book. Like most texts written for English speakers learning Russian, this text is written in British English. I had to Google some things like "gawper." Some grammatical rules are different between American and British English. As long as you don't mind that, this book is great. A must have for anyone learning Russian.

If you are really curious on torturing yourself you may try to read that 6 font size published book. Line spacing is the narrowest. There are also some hand drawings among sentences like brackets or arrows or underlined sentences which gives you an impression that as if that book was photocopied from a used one in the smallest font. Before ordering that book although I benefited from look inside facility I couldn't recognize how it was published. It is impossible to read it without a magnifier and pain in your eyes.
