By interspersing how-to information and reference tables with brief quizzes and exercises, the authors of Unix Made Easy make it more likely that readers will retain information. System administrators might want to think about giving or loaning this book to all Unix newbies under their care.

The guide opens with a quick tour of Unix that includes logging in, exploring directory structures, creating files, and other basic jobs. Then, the authors explain vi using conceptual drawings that are superior for a computer book. Unfortunately, Unix Made Easydoesn't cover other editors as well, although it provides plenty of details on and excellent conceptual drawings of editing aids grep, sed, and awk.

A star in the darkness

UNIX as a cammand line program is mostly like a dark night and this book for sure is like a bright star helps you find your way. It is so easy that a beginner can read and learn about UNIX and have fun running and palying with it. I give it 4 star because it sometimes has too much explaination about an easy issue and miss some more basic information which can help the reader get stronger with UNIX. It is still the only book teaches you and be sure won't waiste your time. It gives you confidence with UNIX. Another weekness of this book is some wrong commands or exercises that can be fixed in 3rd edition. The nice thing with this book is being a hands on book. Do not read this book in a library or away from your computer. Put it on your desk with your computer because for every pages in this book, you need to practice it. It will walk you through the Master of Masters.

This is a marvelous book for beginners. You get step-by-step instructions for the usual stuff, and easily readable and very informative chapters on some things not usually covered in beginner books, like network considerations and using awk. I would have gone insane were it not for this book.

UNIX Made Useless

This book is real big on the "made easy" part. UNIX is a powerful and useful operating system. This book must have an audience in mind that does not probably use UNIX. If you are new to UNIX try one of the "dummies" books. They are a lot cheaper and contain just as much information. If you need a UNIX reference for real work, try one of the "advanced" titles.
If you really want this one, wait around awhile and get it at a half price mom and pop.

This book addresses key aspects of analog integrated circuits and systems design related to system level electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection.� It is an invaluable reference for anyone developing systems-on-chip (SoC) and systems-on-package (SoP), integrated with system-level ESD protection. The book focuses on both the design of semiconductor integrated circuit (IC) components with embedded, on-chip system level protection and IC-system co-design. The readers will be enabled to bring the system level ESD protection solutions to the level of integrated circuits, thereby reducing or completely eliminating the need for additional, discrete components on the printed circuit board (PCB) and meeting system-level ESD requirements. The authors take a systematic approach, based on IC-system ESD protection co-design. A detailed description of the available IC-level ESD testing methods is provided, together with a discussion of the correlation between IC-level and system-level ESD testing methods. The IC-level ESD protection design is demonstrated with representative case studies which are analyzed with various numerical simulations and ESD testing. The overall methodology for IC-system ESD co-design is presented as a step-by-step procedure that involves both ESD testing and numerical simulations.

About the Author

Dr. Vladislav Vashchenko is Director of ESD group at Maxim Integrated Corp responsible for major ESD development aspects across the entire $2.4B enterprise. During previous decade he was leading the ESD group at National Semiconductor Corp. and the decade till then he was a key contributor in reliability department of SRI “Pulsar”(Moscow). He received MS, Engineer-Physicist and “Ph.D. in Physics of Semiconductors” from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (1990) and “Doctor of Science in Microelectronics” degree (1997). He is author of over 140 U.S. patents and over 100 papers in the field, co-author of books “Physical Limitation of Semiconductor Devices” (2008) and “ESD Design for Analog Circuits” (2010,).

Mirko Scholz received the degree ”Diplomingenieur (FH)" from the University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau (Germany) in 2005 and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the Vrije Universiteit in Brussels (VUB) in 2013. In April 2005 he joined the imec ESD team as ESD researcher where he authored and coauthored more than 70 publications, tutorials and patents in the field of ESD reliability and ESD testing. Since 2007, he has been a member of the Device Testing Working Groups of the ESDA standards committee where he currently chairs working group 5.6 (Human Metal Model).

About the Author
Don Ross, a private pilot and engineer, started building model airplanes in 1942 when he volunteered to help with the US Navy’s “Spotter Model Program.” The idea was to construct carefully carved solid pine models of enemy aircraft that were then painted black. After being checked for accuracy by a Navy representative who came to the schools, the models were sent to the Navy to be mounted in the wardrooms of Navy ships to help sailors and airmen quickly identify enemy aircraft. Don worked in the aircraft and instrument industries and eventually ran a company that made nameplates, dials, and other marked items for various industries. His business was known as a “short run” company, specializing in small orders needed in a hurry. Since he wrote all the job sheets for the shop, he became quite practiced at explaining complicated operations to a work force that spoke several languages. Don designed the rubber powered “Canarsie Canary” for beginners, of which thousands were built and successfully flown by rank beginners, and it became an immensely popular project for clubs and scout groups. A video titled “Silent Magic” shows how a group of 20 eleven-years-olds built and flew the “Canary” in a large indoor venue. Most of the models flew for 25-30 seconds, exciting spectators as well as the kids. In 2003 The National Free Flight Society chose the “Canary” as its “Beginner’s Model of the Year.” Don’s “Fledgling” classes have added scores of young and “retread” modelers to the active scene. Don also wrote a column for Flying Models magazine for many years, and his designs have appeared in various magazines. He specializes in “synthesizing” difficult technical information into simple, straightforward how-to basics that make experts out of rank beginners.

This companion to Don Ross's "Rubber Powered Model Airplanes" covers updated information on flying and building rubber powered models. But best of all it now includes information related to flying the new immensely popular micro models. Micro radio control models powered by electric, CO2, as well as rubber are included in this book. Most everything needed to be successful with small model airplanes is included in this book. Everything from tools, materials and construction to flight trimming is addressed. I would highly recommend this book as well as Don's first book "Rubber Powered Model Airplanes" as two books that most any small model airplane enthusiast should have in their library.

Flying Models

Wonderful little book. Written by a master modeler for modelers in an easy to read and comprehend style. It's a really good read for anyone who has or wants to have enough skill to build and trim their own model planes. Far too many have succumbed to the dumbed down practice if buying someone else's toys these days, it seems. This book will go a long way toward correcting that deficiency.

As a long time modeler, I'd say this is one outstanding book. Read both of Don's books for an excellent introduction to stick and tissue modeling (real modeling) and much more. Well written by a master of the craft.

In both instances Pulido details the ways in which racism and economic subordination create subaltern communities, and shows how these groups use available resources to mobilize and improve their social, economic, and environmental conditions. Environmentalism and Economic Justice reveals that the environmental struggles of Chicano communities do not fit the mold of mainstream environmentalism, as they combine economic, identity, and quality-of-life issues. A very important book

Book review for "Asteroid Mining 101"

The book itself is high quality and has clear, easy to read text and many color illustrations.

The book is a follow-up of Mr. Lewis's earlier book "Mining the Sky" but the information here is much more complete, updated to what is known in 2014, and is much more technical. It would be extremely useful, for example, for politicians, investors, or business executives needing to quickly understand the basis for the recent interest and practicality of asteroid mining.

I have bachelor's degrees in applied physics and computer science and it took me about a week to read this book, spending a few hours a night on it. I enjoyed it very much and I will probably read it 2 or 3 more times just to be sure that I understand everything because there is a lot in it to take in. To get the most out of this book I recommend you read Mr. Lewis's other book, "Mining the Sky", first, especially if you don't have a background in science. I did not see any factual errors in the book and it is obvious Mr. Lewis knows the material and has done a lot of quality research bringing this information together.

Once I started to understand the ideas presented in "Mining the Sky" and then in this book, I realized that we (the human race) need to go to space as soon as we possibly can. To me, the human race is similar to a crowd of bored, starving people standing on a sidewalk fighting over a few dried up grains of rice (energy and resources on Earth) who don't realize that all they have to do is turn around and cross a moderately busy street to get to an all you can eat 5 star steak house giving away food for free (the asteroids and comets and other resources in our solar system). Mr. Lewis has given us the tools to pass the biggest IQ test of all time with his books on asteroid mining. In my opinion, Mr. Lewis deserves a Nobel peace prize or at the very least a statue of him made from all of the platinum in the M type asteroid 16 Psyche. Elon Musk said that he started SpaceX and wants to go to Mars because he thinks a future where humans go into space will be much more interesting than one which it doesn't. I agree with him and I would add my own corollary to his statement: humans living in a future where humans don't go into space ultimately have no hope. Probably 90% or more of the problems this world has are political problems, wars, acts of oppression, etc. that are traced back to competition for resources and energy. Mr. Lewis has done a very good job of showing that it doesn't have to be that way because there are enough resources in our solar system to support a population and economy millions of times bigger than what we have now. If we just grow up, start doing a little more long term planning, start believing that we can do this, stop saying it is too hard or too expensive, and put our minds to it so that we can go to space and our future really will be far more interesting.

This book gives me hope.

good book with some annoying flaws

The good news: this is a very informative book about an interesting topic that's been getting a lot of attention recently. It has lots of useful material, and is potentially a valuable reference on the topic. I'm glad to have it on my shelf.
The bad news comes in several parts, individually minor but rather irritating in combination.
Most obviously, the production quality is amateurish, and it's obvious that nobody proofread the final text -- in particular, there are occasional chunks of repeated text and other sloppiness. The tables are printed in a hideous color-on-black format more suited to projection slides than to book pages. The pages with large color illustrations have a strong tendency to curl.
More fundamentally, the book suffers from a common problem: it can't decide whether it wants to be a reference or a gentle introduction, and so it doesn't fully succeed at being either. The introductory material is pretty decent, but the reader seeking only an overview of the topic will have to skip lightly over the blizzard of detail on some topics; the book does at least relegate some of the deeper detail to a long appendix. The reference material falls prey to the temptation to talk about things that seem interesting while sometimes skipping fundamentals -- for example, there is discussion of the composition of the metallic portion of many meteorite types, but seldom any mention of HOW MUCH is metallic in each type.
THERE IS NO INDEX. This is inexcusable in a reference, and a serious defect even in an introduction.
Finally, although the book claims to have been published at the end of last year, it was obviously mostly written a couple of years earlier. The Chelyabinsk meteor is discussed but had clearly only just happened, and the Asteroid Retrieval Mission is mentioned only as the original Keck Institute study. Updates on both would have been appropriate, given more recent developments.
For anyone seriously interested in the subject, this book is well worth having. But be prepared to grit your teeth occasionally.

An Excellent, Easy to Read Primer That Sets The Stage For Asteroid Mining

In Asteroid Mining 101: Wealth for the New Space Economy Dr. John Lewis presents a cogent, relatively easy to read guide to what is possible within the next few decades. The primary focus is on the locations, orbits, behavior and composition of asteroids, including recent information in this evolving science. These are fundamental to conceiving techniques and innovating methods to catch, capture, and extract the resources they can provide for the exploration and exploitation of space by the human race.

Although he does not go into depth on the engineering aspects of mining asteroids, beneficiation, etc., he is careful to note that these, too, will require new approaches that will differ significantly from terrestrial mining practices. Similarly, post processing manufacturing methods are sketchy, although an impressive graphic for an "Asteroid Processing Architecture" is provided and is well thought out. Perhaps in a follow on book the details of that architecture will be presented more clearly with proposals for engineering the equipment necessary to carry the process to fruition. It goes without saying that these processes will require either a vessel(s) or facility/ies in orbit or on the moon with the capabilities to perform them.

The driver for asteroid mining, and other planetary or planetoid bodies for that matter, will almost invariably arise from profit motives for private companies rather than government, although I suspect it will evolve as a private-public partnership, particularly given the control governments exercise over launches and air space. Nevertheless, it will be entrepreneurial risk takers who will accelerate the efforts. To that end, Dr. Lewis presents some compelling numbers on the economic value of asteroid mining, especially the contrast between the costs of transporting materials to space from Earth (which right now is approximately $10K per pound according to NASA figures) and the cost of obtaining them from NEAs in the near term.

Mining asteroids and other bodies will be a complex undertaking, but for the sake of humanity's long term future, the first steps encompassed in the book are a necessary and important step toward that goal. Asteroid Mining 101 is an excellent primer that will stretch your mind and, hopefully, your horizons. Well done.
