What happened!?!?!?

I read the first two books of this series and was so excited about this one I stayed up late and read the whole book. I agree with a previous reviewer it should have been two books! There was not enough time spent developing the relationships between the couples nor the relationship between the individuals and God. Which is sad because in the previous books the authoress took such care to establish emotions, situations and relationships that you couldn't help but feel what the characters where feeling. Not so much in the book.

My other problem was the tragedy! There was so much it really became ridiculous. It really felt like a soap opera. I liked that in the previous books it was about overcoming the main tragedy at the beginning of the first book.

Well I wish the series had ended with a better (two) book(s), but this how it goes sometimes. Authors in general should stick with the same successful formula that they are have already established for the series. Readers like that! Loved the first two books!

Two years ago, Jolene Yoder and her friends planned a visit to Hershey Park. In a blink of an eye, their plans changed when the vehicle they were riding in left the road and crashed. Jolene lost her hearing and was unable to keep her teaching position; she left to go live with her Aunt and Uncle to come to terms with her new silent world.

A message from her mother asks her to come back to her Amish hometown of Topeka, Indiana. She learns that two deaf children have moved to her hometown and are in need of her help in order to attend the local school. Jolene is reluctant to accept because it would mean she would go back home and see her friends, knowing that she would not be able to hear their voices. In Jolene's heart she has always known teaching was her true calling.

Lonnie Hershberger and his family moved from Illinois to Indiana. He is heartbroken that he had to leave behind his girlfriend Carolyn. When he invites her to visit him in Indiana and she doesn't come, he realizes that he must put his love for her behind him and move on with his new life in Indiana.

When Lonnie meets Jolene he feels an immediately immediate attraction to her. He wonders if God has put him in Indiana in order to see the woman that was meant to be with him. Will Jolene return Lonnie's feelings? Or is there someone else who has an interest in claiming Jolene's heart?

A COUSIN'S CHALLENGE is the third and final installment of Wanda E. Brunstetter's Indiana Cousins series. It has been a long time since I have been so impressed by a series. Wanda E. Brunstetter's talented pen has created memorable characters that are truly unforgettable. The Society For The Preservation Of CJ Henderson brings together many of the best of the Tristate and Mid-Atlantic authors - not

Let me start by saying two things: it has been a long time since I reviewed a book and this is a hard one to re-start with.

Everyone I know in the Creative world of the Tristate area was effected by CJ, by his life and by his death. Even if that sounds pretentious it is the truth.

The Society For The Preservation Of CJ Henderson brings together many of the best of the Tristate and Mid-Atlantic authors - not all, our area includes NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore and DC including all would be crazy.

The stories in this anthology includes stories of high fantasy, sci-fi, urban fantasy and, of course, stories set in the world of HP Lovecraft’s Mythos.

I enjoyed every story, but at the same time even the happiest of the stories left me a little sad. Above all I got the feeling he would have loved the work.

If you knew CJ, even tangentially, you will see him in this anthology. If you didn’t know CJ, you will by the end of the book.
I would love to see this anthology have a sequel – and isn’t that the highest praise you can give?

I met CJ Henderson many times... one of the best Authors with his work in person I've ever seen! He was a great salesmen and a great all around guy! His works are excellent as well and if you're a fan of the horror Mythos genre then check out his works!

A celebration of a great writer!

CJ Henderson was a writer's writer. He could fluidly move between genres. His noir was the noirest and his sci fi was the sciffiest. Those who met him, bought his books because he was a great writer and an even better salesman.

This anthology was put together to aid his estate after he came to a tragic end. In some places the haste really shows, but in ever story his talent shows even more.

Donald A. Ritchie is Associate Historian in the United States Senate Historical Office, where he conducts an oral history program. A former president of the Oral History Association, he has served on the council of the American Historical Association, and chaired the Organization of American
Historians' committee on research and access to historical documentation. He has conducted many oral history workshops, and for ten years, he edited the Twayne oral history series.


Donald A. Ritchie is an associate historian at the US Senate Historical Office and a frequent commentator on C-SPAN and NPR. He is the author of seven other books, including Press Gallery: Congress and the Washington Correspondents, winner of the Richard W. Leopold Prize.

Absolutely the finest book I have ever read on this subject. In addition to examining each article and each amendment, Ritchie provides complementary historical information as to the reasons for each article and the way it has been developed and used over the years. This book is truly a treasure chest of fascinating American history.

The way a book on Our Constitution should be

Most of us would like to know more about our constitution but most of us are not the type of person who enjoys reading detailed historical or legal books. One look at this book draws you in - it is the way you have always wished a book on a weighty topic would be written. Each section of the Constitution is presented with the discussion divided into three parts: a)The actual words in the document. b)What is meant, in everyday language. c)Examples of historical applications from the recent past. It is a great reference to have when you want to review a specific part of the Constitution whether for a youngster or an adult. Lots of great pictures of the past and not so long ago.

We are a Repulic not a democracy...

This book is beautifully illustrated and explains our Constitution in an enjoyable manner, without dumbing it down.

My US History teacher, Dave, gave me this book. Although it more of a reference book I am reading it as a book.
I am learning many details like there are 7,200 words in our Constitution. Our founding fathers wanted to establish our country into a republic like the Greeks, instead of a democracy like the Romans.

I am writing and taking notes in this book so I can learn about this fascinating document, which has made this country a light for the rest of the world.

John F. Kennedy, said on September 17, 1960, "I hold the view that the Constitution is the most revolution document ...ever written, and it should to new countries serve as a source of stimulation and enterprise."

Our children need to learn about this brilliant document in school.

I am trying to decipher whether there is any bias. I was disappointed to see that there is nothing in this book about the Libertarian Party.

Interesting Account of Soviet Impact on Central Asian Muslims

[*Note: The following review is of select portions of the book, Islam after Communism, by Adeeb Khalid. It takes into account the Introduction, Chapters 1-3 and 5, and the Conclusion]

Islam after Communism is an attempt to convince the reader that the notion of "Islam" as a fixed set of (1) rules, (2) practices, (3) ideas--indeed, a fixed anything--that exists independent of political, economical, and other historical changes, is a fallacious assumption. The author, Adeeb Khalid, attempts to accomplish this feat primarily through the examples of the profound transformations the seventy-three-year period (1918-1991) of Soviet authority rendered in the religious, political, educational, and cultural understandings of Islam by the Muslim populations of Central Asia. His basic concern seems to be the deconstruction of the "Western essentialist" view of Islam: That it is (1) political by nature, (2) intolerant of other ideologies (religious, economic, and political), (3) oppressive to women, (4) militant in achieving its aims, and (5) that the most important thing to EVERY Muslim is that the tenets of Islam be upheld at ALL costs.

Although the author is rather opinionated (and repetitive), he is a good story teller. The book is an interesting, smooth read. I recommend it for anybody interested in the history of the Soviet Union, the Communist influence in Central Asia and on Central Asian Muslims, and/or the history of the Muslim peoples. This is a history book, not a book about Islamic religion per se.

An eye witness :)

Being a grandson for a man who suffered from the Bolshevik revolution and a man who left his country for the sake of his faith, I consider myself as a part of this book.

I have not finished the book yet, but until now what I have gained from this book are three things:
1- New information about the hidden history of central Asia at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. And the role of the Muslim scholars "the Ulama" at that time.
2- A refreshment of what I have been told by grandparents about the soviet assault on Islam and the way they fought to keep it.
3- A new and clear picture of Islam and its meaning in central Asia nowadays.

If you want to know what Islam is to Central Asians I recommend this book.

An Interesting Description of Central Asian Islam

This short book is a brief history of Islam in Central Asia, and a longer argument about the nature of Islam in Central Asia (by which he primarily means Uzbekistan). Specifically, Prof. Khalid argues that Uzbek Islam is different from Islam in other regions (such as Pakistan or Saudi Arabia) because of its very different history. Decades of Soviet control, he argues, has had a profound effect on the way Uzbeks view their religion. The writing is sometimes choppy, and the historical sections assume a certain amount of background knowledge. I recommend this book to specialists or to college students with at least a minimal knowledge of Central Asian history and geography. It is too dense and obscure for more casual readers.

In the rest of this review, I address some more specific points.

1. Prof. Khalid does not shy away from attacking other authors. Salman Rushdie's views are "particularly pompous" (p. 208, n. 14). Ahmed Rashid mixes "arrogance and ignorance in equal measure" in describing Central Asia (p. 3). See also p. 209, n.20; p. 210, n. 4. Even where I agree with Prof. Khalid's conclusions, his arrogant tone does not help him persuade.

2. Specifically, Prof. Khalid spends a great deal of time attacking "essentialism" and its proponents, like Samuel Huntington and Bernard Lewis. "Essentialism" is the view, in this context, that a "pure" or "true" Islam exists, and that to the extent that cultures or sects deviate from the pure form, they are not really Muslim. Essentialism, in Prof. Khalid's view, is historically baseless, and also irresponsible because it creates and "us versus them" attitude that, in turn, leads to conflict. "Islam, for Lewis, is immutable and impervious to change brought about by history or society. ...Such essentialist arguments are much loved by today's Islamic extremists, who proceed from the assertion of total incompatibility of Islam and the West. Osama bin Laden and Bernard Lewis completely agree on this point" (p. 7).

Objectively speaking, I think Prof. Khalid is correct. Speaking as a non-Muslim, it seems clear to me that Islam can and has changed, at least in its outward forms, and today varies from region to region, from sect to sect, and from believer to believer. But in another, very important sense, Prof. Khalid is wrong. Sometimes perception is reality. To a radical Muslim, the notion of situational Islam is ridiculous. To the extent that Khalid's Uzbeks differ in belief or practice from Muslims in other places, they are not simply different - they are apostate. And the distiction is important enough in the eyes of many to warrant assassination and terrorism. Some Muslims may believe Islam is compatible with modernity, but others disagree. The terms "dar al-Islam" and "dar al-Harb," after all, were not invented by Westerners.

3. The upshot of the "essentialist" argument is Prof. Khalid's conclusion that Uzbeks should not be lumped in with other Islamic groups, or automatically assumed to be radical. Stated so simply, I completely agree. The reality, obviously, is not so simple, and the book provides its own evidence. Prof. Khalid minimizes the role and legitimacy of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), and yet the group exists, and actively fought coalition forces in Afghanistan. Its members may be small, but they came from somewhere - both physically and culturally. Prof. Khalid's tone suggests his dislike for President Bush, yet Bush's willingness to work with Uzbek President Islam Karimov until 2005 indicates that Bush was not guilty of tarring all Uzbeks as dangerous fanatics.

Although I disagree with some of what Prof. Khalid writes, I nevertheless enjoyed the book for the engaging discussion. Far better to encounter an idea, examine it, accept the good and reject the bad, than to remain unaware.

Excellent Text on Plasma Discharge Fundamentals

This text was used in my graduate electrical engineering course on gas breakdown physics offered at my school (a major U.S. technical university). The fundamentals of electron / ion generation in various electric field configurations and pressure conditions are covered in analytical detail, including all of the essential breakdown mechanisms which have been studied in literature. Also included is a great deal of experimental data useful for practical laboratory experiments with plasmas. The text is written at a level which should be useful for early graduate students in engineering or physics (beyond the level of F. Chen, Introduction to Plasma Physics), although it comes easier depending on the student's background in plasma physics, statistical mechanics, or circuit theory. This book covers essentially the same material as the much older text by E. Nasser (Fundamentals of Gaseous Ionization and Plasma Electronics), but is much cheaper (
