A happy return: "Watching TV" still works

The great risk in doing a book like "Watching TV," which both takes television history seriously and has fun with it, is that it may prove to be neither fish nor fowl -- too scholarly for those that want mere nostalgia, and with too much affection for its subject to please those who just want the facts.

Happily, "Watching TV" avoids this pitfall. In the end, the book leans more to the scholarly side than the trivial, but given the vital role the medium plays in our society, the balance feels right.

In this second edition of their 1982 book, Harry Castleman and Wally Podrazik take us up to the 2002-03 season, covering, in the updated material: NBC's return to respectability; cable's steady march to power, the emergence of Fox, the WB and UPN's debuts as broadcast networks, the regulatory shift that has concentrated ownership in a way not seen in decades; the beginnings of the reality show phenomenon, the launch of new technology that promises to change the medium forever, and more.

One of the remarkable aspects of the book remains its refusal to traffic in simple answers. If you're sure that Castleman and Podrazik are making a quick, easy generalization, keep reading: You'll soon see that they will articulate the issue's complexity.
The easiest temptation for two Baby Boomer authors would have been to write a lament for "the good old days" of television. But Castleman and Podrazik point out the good and the bad in every season, in artistic, commercial and social terms.

The season-by-season structure has several advantages. One is that you get the sense, moreso than in any other book about TV history, of how the networks have competed with one another. While it's fun to look at the various fall schedules, the text in each chapter often explains why certain shows were placed into certain slots, how another network sought to counterprogram that same slot, and the results of such moves.
ABC, which for many years was a perennial third-place finisher during the three-network days, is worth keeping an eye on throughout the book, because its desperation to get out of last place made it willing to take bold chances. We learn, for instance why CBS programming head James Aubrey was fired during the 1964-65 season, following some scheduling tactics by ABC that threatened the Tiffany Network's prime time supremacy (and set the precedent for a practice that is only now beginning to fade). And because the book is chronological, you already know from the previous chapter how ABC planted the seeds for its near-upset. If I'm making all of this sound like boring corporate infighting that no one could possibly care about today, that isn't the way it's presented in the book. The shows from that season are discussed in fun detail, but the added context of how the networks used them gives the book heft.
Another fascinating network vs. network storyline again involves ABC, this time concerning its challenge to the No. 1 spot in the 1975-76 season. Castleman and Podrazik explain how CBS' momentum was stopped by the new "family hour" that was mandated by the FCC (8-9 p.m.), as it allowed its program development to be hamstrung by the rule. ABC chief Fred Silverman recognized the opportunity and seized it, utilizing "Happy Days," "Welcome Back Kotter" and other now-fondly remembered shows to steer the network to ratings success. The authors have put themselves in a good position to sustain the drama inherent in Silverman's maneuverings, having explained ABC's self-sabotage in previous seasons. The '75-'76 chapter essentially ends on a cliffhanger, as Silverman is poised to take the lead, but hasn't quite gotten there. ABC does finish No. 1 in 1976-77, and Castleman and Podrazik know how to make that chapter pay off.
Another thing that works about the season-by-season approach is that the authors revisit shows and events along different points on a timeline. It's one thing to have a book that explains in a few paragraphs that "Gunsmoke" debuted in 1955 as a half-hour show, moved to an hour in 1961, was almost canceled in 1967, but was saved and became a big hit again. But in "Watching TV," you get a real sense of how different an atmosphere the show thrived in during its early years was from the one it basked in later.
Make no mistake, though, the book can be very funny. My personal favorite example of this is the authors' description of "Gilligan's Island." I won't spoil it here, but suffice it to say that Castleman and Podrazik have more than a few problems with the tale of those seven stranded castaways. As always, they put the show in full context, pointing out other escapist sitcoms that appeared around the same time.
The second edition of "Watching TV" is a very worthwhile purchase for devoted buffs who care about the past, present, and future of our most important medium.

The definitive chronicle of TV's history

Unlike most of the TV reference books, this is a season-by-season narrative of the history of television. One can pick up the book and turn to any chapter and, even if one is too young to remember that particular TV season, get the flavor of the events of that season and the major programs and trends. A good, informative read, with an objective, down-the-middle viewpoint.

The new 2nd revised edition takes the story up through 2009, using the same very readable approach to the increasingly-complex chronicle of the medium. Even if, like me, you don't watch much entertainment TV any longer, there's enough interesting material in even the last few chapters to give everyone something interesting to ponder. And, yes, following the up-and-down year-to-year fortunes of the major networks is quite fascinating.

New Expanded Edition! Bravo!

Watching TV has been expanded to run through the 2009-2010 television season. A lot of important television trends and news events have taken place since the previous edition. Although I owned the prevision edition, I had no reservations towards buying the updated edition. The book starts with the dawn of television and moves forward with each subsequent television season (which generally starts in September of each year). If you read the book in cronological order, you get a fasinating overview of how the networks came to be and how televions was viewed by government and the press. A prime time grid is provided for each season listing all of the shows and the netwrok they appeared on. You learn about the federal government calling televiosn a wasteland in the early sixites as viewers tuned in sitcoms such as "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "Green Acres." While the FCC may have looked down on such shows, they were truly funny. TV classics such as "The Twilight Zone," "The Prisoner," "M*A*S*H" are highlighted along side popular guilty pleasures. In addition to coverage of the best and worst TV had to offer for each season, the authors go through important news events and how they were covered by TV. The authors go through how JFK took advantage of the medium during his debate with Nixon and how television covered the his assasination. It's all there: the Beatles on "The Ed Sullivan Show," Vietman, man's first steps on the moon, the birth of CNN, 911 and so much more. The book is well indexed, which makes it easy to get information on a particular television show. I was also delighted to learn that the most watched US TV show of all time is no longer the last episode of "M*A*S*H," but rather the New Orleans Saints victory over the Colts in the 2010 Super Bowl. As a Saints fan dating back to the team's first year in 1967, that bit of information alone made me glad I purchased the latest edition!

Arora has taught mycology for close to twenty years and has hunted and photographed mushrooms across the North American continent. Threaded through the book are his wry and humorous observations and comments, making what could have been a rather dull, "just-the-facts, ma'am" reference book into a really enjoyable read. The stunning photographs of the incredible variety of fungi are fascinating and eye-opening, and while the author gives clear and factual information, the mysterious allure of mushrooms in their countless shapes, sizes and colors is only increased by this huge and delightful book. --Mark Hetts

A classic... nothing else comes close

The definitive thing you need to have if you're a mushroom lover. Maybe not in your backpack or hip pocket, but at basecamp for those rare gems that nothing else works. Exhaustive complete work, I thought I could get by without it owning it myself. Unless you're a mushroom savant, and memorized all of the obscurities and rarities, beyond the typical things you normally find you'll appreciate this! Such a classic, love the epic stories of mushroom culture and the hunt too. Might be a bit much to chew for neophytes, but is still accessible with room to grow into the hobby.

The most comprehensive mushroom books for people who are serious about 'wanting to know' mushrooms!

Recently a friend took a photo of a mushroom she found while hiking that no other books illustrated. I was able to relatively easily locate this mushroom in David Arora's book and use the key to narrow it down to one of two species. Aurora's other book "All That The Rain Promises" is a nice 'lightweight' version of this book for people that want to tip only their big toes into the waters of mycology before 'diving in' headfirst. If you do want to go 'head on' fully into the study of mushrooms, then this 'heavyweight'(literally and figuratively) book is the one for you.

Personally, I am not yet into the binomial key level of ID for the most part and mostly look at photos in this book and ask those more experienced than myself for ID assistance. I hear that Aurora is working on an updated version of this book. I use this book in conjunction with about 10 other mushroom books to compare photos and information!

Historically accurate fiction of a horrific recent history

I'm very glad that the author chose to finally publish work this in Kindle ebook format. I can understand why publishers had declined it at the time. It is a well-researched historical fiction of the experience of Western POWs in Southeast Asia in WWII. It is not cheerful reading. The treatment of prisoners was brutal and survival rates low. Even among the survivors many were so traumatized that that their lives were greatly shortened, the father of one of my friends was among these.

That said, I don't feel this is Radcliffe's very best writing. I felt that Under and English Heaven, for example, is a better-rendered tale. But I feel this book has a particular importance and I'm grateful that it could be rescued from complete oblivion. If you like to develop an appreciation of real history through fiction set in accurate context, you'll be glad to have read this book.

Top Notch Author and Storyteller

Yes, this is a rather sad story. But it is very well told and the characters really draw you in. It really is bound to be sad: it is a story about a sad chapter in the history of our world. I would HIGHLY recommend anything written by Robert Radcliffe. He is one of the most underrated authors of our time.

War is hell but this story is heavenly

A story told with such power and authenticity that it feels like you are right there with the characters, witnessing, and enduring, landmark moments of history. John Mawson's expert narration is the perfect compliment to Robert Radcliffe's stirring writing. Beneath Another Sun ranks up there with many other great novels about wartime and I thoroughly recommend the audio book version which brings these characters so vividly to life.

The millennial generation is stuck in a condition called emerging adulthood; that is, these twentysomethings are delaying the traditional markers of growing up, leaving home, becoming financially independent, getting married, and having children. Sociology as a Handmaiden to Young Adult Evangelism

“All young people, newly come into an urban environment, and living for the first time outside of the family group and the association of old acquaintances, constitute an element of gravest spiritual and moral dangers as well as one of untold possibilities.”

Is this the latest warning from the Barna Group about the problem of young people leaving the Church? No, these are the words of University of Chicago sociologist H. Paul Douglass in The St. Louis Church Survey published in 1924. Anxiety about the spiritual fate of young adults is evergreen.

And so, it seems, is the solution to the problem: “It is urged that all religious forces keep steadily in sympathetic touch with all these groups,” Douglass went on to write, “and that agencies particularly designed to serve them receive united support.”

Naomi Schaefer Riley concludes Got Religion? with these words in order to remind readers that passing on the faith to the next generation has always been a challenge, even if the contemporary age adds unique twists to that challenge. Her book outlines the strategies some American evangelicals, Muslims, Catholics, Jews, historically black churches, and parachurch organizations are utilizing to attract and retain young people—defined as people born after 1980—within their respective religious communities.

In the Introduction, Riley identifies three reasons why the intergenerational transmission of faith is especially difficult at the present moment: “the trends of family formation, the cultural acceptability of not belonging to a religious institution, and the steady decline of attendance” at religious services. In other words, young adults marry later, if at all, identify themselves as religious nones, and are standoffish to religious institutions—indeed, institutions more generally. Since family, religious identity, and religious participation are crucial to each of the religious groups Riley surveys, a decline in those three factors spells trouble for all of them.

Obviously, there are theological differences between these various religious groups that will color how they reach out to young adults. There are also sociological differences. Historically, the Church has played a much larger role in the African American community than in the Anglo American community, for example. Jews have a unique attachment to the State of Israel. Muslims come to America as immigrants from many countries. And Mormons are concentrated in certain regions of America.

Nonetheless, how these various religious groups reach out to young adults shares much in common too, sociologically speaking. After profiling some of these outreach efforts, Riley concludes her book with this statement:

"Religious leaders who are successfully connecting with young adults realize that sleek advertising is not going to bring people into the pews. The barriers to entry are not matters for public relations firms to tackle. Young adults want community. They want a neighborhood. They want a critical mass of people their age. But they want to see older people and younger people in their religious institutions, too. They want a way to serve, and many of them want a way to serve sacrificially for longer periods of time. They want the racial and ethnic diversity of the country reflected in their religious community. They want a message (in English) that resonates and helps them tackle the practical challenges they face, of which there are many. They want to feel welcome whether they are single or married. And while they may appear to be experiencing an extended adolescence, when they are given responsibility, they are often inclined to take it."

Multigenerational community, service opportunities, ethnic diversity, relevant religious instruction, hospitality regardless of marital status, and leadership responsibilities: Religious groups that offer these things to young adults are more likely to attract and retain them than those who don’t. Frankly, as an “older” American, such a church would be more likely to attract and retain me too.

From the standpoint of Christian theology—or Muslim or Jewish theology, for that matter—Riley’s sociological account of young adults’ participation raises questions she neither asks nor answers. As a Christian minister, I want to ask questions such as: What is the role of the Holy Spirit in drawing people into the Church? Are a religious group’s doctrinal claims true or false? Is Jesus Christ the way of salvation? Were I writing a book about Christians attracting and retaining young adults in the faith, I would explore those theological questions alongside Riley’s sociological ones.

Regardless, Riley’s book is a valuable one. Sociology, it turns out, can be a handmaiden to evangelism. A church that preaches the gospel but ignores what attracts and retains young is not likely to accomplish its mission very well.

Perceptive and Personable

Where have the college and post college crowd gone? This question engages my cerebral energies often, because I work with the teenagers of our church who are about to head to college, and co-pastor a congregation that has a noticeable number of middle aged men and women. So, where have the college and post college crowds gone? Naomi Schaefer Riley, an accomplished author who is also a weekly columnist for the New York Post and a former Wall Street Journal editor, delves into this difficulty and how to interest them, in her newest 174 page hardback, “Got Religion? How Churches, Mosques and Synagogues Can Bring Young People Back.” This easy-to-read volume walks through the storied approaches of diverse groups attempting to touch the twenty and thritysomethings in their world.
In “Got Religion?” we are privileged to listen, with the author, to the anecdotes and narratives, feats and failures, of Presbyterian, Muslim, Jewish, Mormon and Black Baptist institutional leaders who are succeeding in reaching the college and post college crowd in some way. But we are also favored to hear the yearnings and longings, along with the turn-ons and turn-offs, of the younger people who have become involved in these establishments. The importance of community and neighborhood, the “sense of belonging” (142), rings out clearly in many of the accounts, and sundry ways. Similarly, that this is a generation “particularly suspicious of bureaucracy and slick advertising” (13) that is looking for authenticity in both leadership and laity, surfaces often. Likewise there are also indications that “service – serious, long-term sacrifice requiring service” (144) is alluring to this age group. Based on these traits, Riley also points up the importance of making a place for the twenty and thirtysomethings in leadership, that they are “often inclined to take” the responsibilities offered to them (154).
In working through “Got Religion?” various emotions and cogitations were triggered in me. Everything from sheer frustration over the obvious and subtle self-centeredness exhibited in some of the statements from this younger group, to gloomy disappointment at the misunderstandings they voiced. And yet, their stories and concerns have prompted me to reconsider what can be done in our particular setting as suburban church where parishioners are splattered hither, thither and yon. Riley’s work has given me reason to pause, ponder and pray.
“Got Religion?” will challenge several of your personal prejudices and preconceptions, and confirm others. Nevertheless I doubt it will be possible to examine this book and remain unaffected by it. Riley’s material would make an ideal read for congregational leadership, Christian educators, service agencies, and denominational committees concerned with attracting this age group. I readily recommend the book.
