Fine book but there are better

Read this book in one sitting. Mr. Hirsch makes many excellent points about house design, especially the feel and flow of a house, symmetry and asymmetry, capturing light, repeating certain motifs, etc. etc. If this is the only book you read prior to designing or remodelling a house, you will be ahead of the game. However, I do think many of the same points are made more effectively, with more extensive illustrations, and in a better organized fashion in two other books: Patterns of Home (Jacobson et al.) and Home by Design (Sarah Susanka). To supplement learning about design principles, a great book to walk you through through nitty gritty details of functionality so that you avoid annoying mistakes like poor placement of light switches, inconvenient door locations, awkward placement of appliances and so forth, try Better House, Better Living, by Myron Ferguson.

Finally! A Decent Book About Home Design!

If you are just starting out in the home design process, you may find this book to be the single most valuable resource available. My wife and I read dozens of home design books and they were all worthless. Seriously! Even the books that get great reviews on Amazon were of no use to us since we are not building an ultra-contemporary eye-sore on the left coast.

Mr. Hirsch's book is a refreshing reminder of what home design is all about. You will read this book and learn something. With that, you'll be able to go to an architect and not sound like a clueless fool. This book will, in some ways, provide an education in design so you can convey a better sense of what you would like in your new home to your designer or architect. I can honestly say that we would be afraid to tell a local architect about any of the other books we have read during our design journey but this book is an exception. It is very well written.

This is a simple book to read but it's suggestions and comments are profound and inspiring. You can't go wrong with this one.

Excellent overview of the architectural process and the art of home design

In the past, I've always thought that hiring an architect to design a traditional residential house is akin to hiring Picasso to paint a family portrait of you, your spouse, and the kids--the odds are you won't like the results and Picasso will just be annoyed. At least that was my impression of the profession gleaned from perusing the pages of Architectural Digest and the like.

Refreshingly, the author warns you away from that sort of architect (unless you prefer Cubist family portraits, of course) and toward architects who are willing to design YOUR HOUSE in your style. To that end, it is vitally important that you are able to communicate as much of your wants, needs, desires and patterns of living as possible to the architect so that he or she can design the house of your dreams. This book does a great job of facilitating that discussion by explaining how architects design houses, starting with the art of how to 'people' a space, to proper massing and symmetry, through all the details involved in site selection, orientation, materials, and floor plan organization, and finally to the depressing realities of budgets and compromises. This is an excellent book to read through once or twice while thinking about the house YOU want to build, before you lock yourself in to a site, designer, floor plan or builder that you will later regret.

I live in a county of houses built primarily in the Contemporary Tract style. After reading this book, I'm far more aware of why I find much of it so repulsive. Everything from brick fireplaces extending from wooden decks, to "houses in holes" below the edge of a road, to single-story houses perched on crawl spaces two stories high (with decks so high and spindly looking I never see them occupied--their owners are probably too terrified to go out on them.) Those mistakes, and many more, are all explained in detail in this book.

Sadly, that is also possibly the greatest weakness of the book. Paying attention to the details costs money and requires craftsmanship, both of which seem to be in short supply these days. Most of the examples in this book focus on high-end, spacious homes obviously built by true custom builders (not the 'customize from our five available plans' so-called custom builders). There isn't much material discussing the issues of small houses, small lots, or finding talent with staying power in the boom/bust flip-me-now world that is the current U.S. real estate market. On a formatting note, it would be nice to see the author create end-of-chapter summaries highlighting the salient points of each chapter, as a quick checklist one could use later during more detailed design discussions. Finally, note that there is little technical depth in this book. You won't find much discussion about the merits of slabs vs. crawl spaces vs. basements, or framing vs. manufactured trusses. The text stays mostly at a higher level of art and functionality, and presumes those construction details will be sorted out by an architect and builder. Even owner-builders, though, should find the principles of art and architecture worth perusing. For that, this book is excellent.

About the Author
Janet M.Tavakoli is the President of Tavakoli Structured Finance, a Chicago-based consulting firm to financial institutions, institutional investors, and hedge funds. She gave advance warning of major collapses regarding Long-Term Capital Management, First Alliance Mortgage, the thrift industry, and the current credit bubble. Business-Week's profile called Tavakoli "The Cassandra of Credit Derivatives." She has over twenty years of experience trading, structuring, and marketing derivatives and structured products. Tavakoli is a former adjunct associate professor in the Finance Department of the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business, where she taught derivatives. She is also the author of the first edition of Collateralized Debt Obligations and Structured Finance and Credit Derivatives and Synthetic Structures, now in its second edition. Tavakoli is frequently published and quoted in numerous financial publications including the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, BusinessWeek, Journal of Structured Finance, Derivatives Week, and many others. Informative, acerbic and fun look at credit derivatives

I echo the praises of this book sung by previous reviewers. But I can also say in all sincerity that this is the most fun book I can ever recall reading about finance.

The book isn't an overview of the current credit crisis per se, but a detailed look at some of the building blocks that came tumbling down (as well as some that might collapse in the future, such as total-rate-of-return (TRO) swaps). It's addressed to a professional audience, so if you're shy about reading books with some equations you might not enjoy it so much. Most of these are pretty simple, though, and none involve calculus.

Still, I'd recommend that you not be put off by the quantitative bits and professional terminology. To a greater extent than most other finance books, Tavakoli uses diagrams to explain the deal structures. The pictures aren't always understandable separately from the text, but they are generally very lucid and valuable. Most importantly, interspersed with the material for practitioners are extended narrative, historical and critical passages, which will give you an insider's insights into the role human nature plays in quantitative finance. Although she's a financial professional herself, Tavakoli isn't afraid to call 'em how she sees 'em, often with a bit of appropriate cynicism, e.g. "Hedge funds have made massive leveraged credit bets, knowing that their upside is billions in fees and their downside is millions in fees" @ 430. I even laughed out loud in a couple of places, which was a personal first for a book of this genre.

Occasionally Tavakoli uses terminology that isn't explained until later (such as "value at risk" (VaR), which is mentioned @ 87 but not explained until the next chapter, @ 94ff); unfortunately, the index is an erratic aid in this situation (e.g., VaR's first entry in the index is for page 97). But these are very minor quibbles, and shouldn't discourage you from reading this terrific book.

As close as you will get to the deal table

I'm told Ms. Tavakoli is doing a booming business these days helping plaintiffs with synthetic CDO lawsuits. If so, there may be some justice in the world. She is a rare creature of finance, hard-working genius grounded in ethics that should define the profession (i.e., due diligence on behalf of clients. What a concepts). As others have rightly noted, the book contains something you can't find *anywhere* else: myriad details of real-world transactions and actual practices as they vary from theory. In short, the straight scoop from the inside.

Briefly, my only nit, which is unrelated to Ms. Tavakolio's genius and generosity: the organization and editing of the book are, at times, a bit too much brisk swerving narrative and not enough pedagogy (e.g., there isn't quite enough help understanding the synthetic CDO and equity CDO case studies, I doubt many readers will suffer the details in the way they are presented). She knows too much stuff. On some of the transactions, I struggled to keep up. A full reading of the book would have taken less time if they had polished the final, tightened the organization, and paused to explain in a few areas. She is five stars and then some, the book is four stars for degree of difficulty.

The first half of book is generally an introduction to credit derivatives, the building blocks that constitute the more sophisticated CDO technologies; e.g., CDS, CLN, role of SPE/SPV, early CDO technology, credit enhancement (very important!), CDOs backed by RMBS.

The best part of the book is the second half. Selected highlights:

* Great stuff on CDO tranches; e.g., senior tranches tend to bear the systemic risk while junior (1st to default) tranches bear the name or idiosyncratic risk
* The best part of the book, for me, is the detailed compare/contrast between a synthetic arb CDO and cash arb CDO; e.g., cash CDO has a market risk hedge counterparty (interest rate and currency), synthetic CDO does not; synthetic CDO has a super senior tranche;
* Several brilliant anecdotes related to model risk in practice (mis-applications of models). If she doesn't prove to you that "approximately right" is a better goal than "precisely wrong," nothing will budge you.
* Helpful due diligence questions for an investor to ask of CDO manager; e.g., have you been deposed in last 5 years?

* What does she conclude in the chapter "The Credit Crunch and CDOs?" There is no other way to say this, it's a broadside against the credit rating agencies. On several levels, by the way (motives, application of statistics). She says, "My own view is that for structured products, the NRSRO designation should be revoked." She makes the point that "savvy investors ignore ratings" (i.e., knowing they are wrong).

If you are going to buy only one book on this topic, this is the one to buy.

Second, it provides an insightful analysis that makes it easy to grasp the issues behind the current financial crisis [What, Why & Who]

Third, it is written by somebody who understands the topics and has done the stuff (NOT by somebody who talked to somebody who thinks is an expert, but cannot know for sure because he(or she) does not really know the topic well).

Fourth, it is written in a style that is fresh and engaging, but precise: neither the pedantic language of some academics nor the infantilizing language of some amateurish journalists.

Chapter 17 (The Credit Crunch and CDOs) is a MUST for anyone involved in the structured products market.

About the Author

Marilyn Stokstad, teacher, art historian, and museum curator, has been a leader in her field for decades and has served as president of the College Art Association and the International Center of Medieval Art. In 2002, she was awarded the lifetime achievement award from the National Women’s Caucus for Art. In 1997, she was awarded the Governor’s Arts Award as Kansas Art Educator of the Year and an honorary degree of doctor of humane letters by Carleton College. She is Judith Harris Murphy Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. She has also served in various leadership capacities at the University’s Spencer Museum of Art and is Consultative Curator of Medieval Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri

Michael W. Cothren is Scheuer Family Professor of Humanities and Chair of the Department of Art at Swarthmore College, where he has also served as Coordinator of Medieval Studies and Chair of the Humanities Division. Since arriving at Swarthmore in 1978, he has taught specialized courses on Medieval, Roman, and Islamic art and architecture, as well as seminars on visual narrative and on theory and method, but he particularly enjoys teaching the survey to Swarthmore beginners. His research and publications focus on French Gothic art and architecture, most recently in a book on the stained glass of Beauvais Cathedral entitled Picturing the Celestial City. Michael is a consultative curator at the Glencairn Museum in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. He has served on the board of the International Center of Medieval Art and as President both of the American Committee of the International Corpus Vitrearum and of his local school board. When not teaching, writing, or pursuing art historical research, you can find him hiking in the red rocks around Sedona, Arizona.

just what it sounds like, but i wish it would lay out some ...

just what it sounds like, but i wish it would lay out some of the distinct characteristics of the art in the chapters by time-period, I also wish it would have a vocabulary list at the end of the chapter, which vocabulary is not really very full. it is missing terms. I wish it would section off the each chapter under bolded or underlined sections according to painting, and it does not have a lot of paintings in it. it feels more like a shortened version of a bigger book. it doesn't seem to describe or explain the paintings symbols or styles very much, it mostly just explains the context in which the painting was given and the art theory. I really thought that art history was looking at the art in it's context with the composition, yes, but also what was going on in the picture, why some things are the way they are, what philosophy related to what parts of the paintings. Analysis is a big part of any art history class, a part which i thoroughly enjoy, and just some of the history is in there and some descriptions of the paintings, the painters, but not in much detail even. i would rather have a bigger book than not enough detail. This is from a student who has to read the book for class, but i've found i can pass the class just fine without the book.

Thorough and Readable (but expensive)

This textbook was required by a class and panicked when I saw the prices for buying it. Being able to rent it cut the price to a third and made it affordable. Had I realized the quality of the info and the readability of the text, I might have considered continuing the search for a cheaper used copy to purchase, rather than rent. $60 for a rental is a lot and most textbooks I've found are not worth that. This one would be worth buying for that price (but not the almost $300 a new one goes for). Because mine was used, it did not include the MyArtsLab disk. I could have purchased it for $100, but after discussing it with my professor, decided to take the risk that I might not have access to some info and risk a lower grade. She didn't think it would cost me more than a letter grade. She was right. I was able to use what was in the book to learn the material and write the thorough critiques/comparisons she expected for class.I had to do some small amount of Internet searching for the extra insights needed for some of the assignments, but I was able to easily find what I needed in the book, without the expensive "publisher's content" available with the MyArtsLab purchase. (I made an A!)

Great book

Rented this textbook for my art history class in undergrad. The book starts of with basic art terms (called starter kit) which is great if you have no idea what kind of terminology art uses. The book then goes on to give an introduction of art and art history which is also nice. This book had a lot of useful information and really went in depth on each topic. There were also questions at the end of the chapter that you can answer. You can also get the MyArtsLab if you want take a closer look at the artwork (I didn't get it.. It's optional). Overall, It was a great read on the history of art.

One comes away from this major biography with an image of the Cuban dictator as a man who is a leader but not a thinker or innovator. Emphasizing Castro's often wrongheaded impulsiveness, Quirk ( The Mexican Revolution and the Catholic Church ) chronicles how his foreign and domestic crash programs have done Cuba more harm than good. Quirk's richly detailed, psychologically acute portrait reveals more about Castro's unique personality and character than do previous biographies. A thorough examination of the leader's homophobia and difficulties with women, for instance, reveals a life spent being looked after by females without being able to form a lasting sexual relationship with any of them--including the 20-year association with protective lioness Celia Sanchez, which the author likens to that between a son and doting mother. Quirk's concluding assessment of the Maximum Leader is harsh: Castro, he argues, has become a caricature of his earlier self. History, far from absolving him, has simply passed him by. In a vivid, fascinating portrait of Cuba's ``Maximum Leader,'' Quirk (The Mexican Revolution and the Catholic Church, 1910-29, 1973, etc.--not reviewed) traces Castro's evolution from marginalized radical to Communist dictator. Castro, the son of an uncultured nouveau riche farmer from Spain, was educated in religious schools and at the Univ. of Havana, where he received a law degree and where, though undistinguished academically, he had experiences important for his radical career: He joined several groups of insubordinate student- hoodlums, and he organized a protest that resulted in the burning of buses. In recounting his subject's career as a radical (after Batista seized power in 1952, Castro abandoned his law practice for full-time radical politics), Quirk emphasizes the utter ordinariness of events that Castro later invested with mythological significance--particularly his unsuccessful ragtag attack on the Moncada barracks in July 1952; his friendship with the Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara; his 1956 return to Cuba with 90 followers in the leaky yacht Granma (which resulted in the immediate capture or death of most of Castro's force); and his struggle in the Sierra Maestra against increasingly demoralized government forces. Quirk shows that Castro, though long influenced by Marxist writings, identified his movement as Communist only after repeated confrontations with the US over American business activity in Cuba. Castro militarized the nation's economy and, in accordance with Soviet policy, tried to export revolution to the rest of Latin America as well as to Africa, even while brutally stifling civil liberties and dissent at home. Quirk ends with a look at Castro's refusal to reform his political system despite declining living standards and international isolation in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union: ``By all appearances...[Castro] would see Cuba destroyed before he gave up his authority and his prerogatives.'' On Fidel and Fidelismo

I have read this book recently as well as all of the reviews by customers. There's some amazing stuff in these reviews, by the way, ranging from "I like Cubans and they are cool people" to "I hate Texans and patriotism."
Whatever. Quirk's book is an excellent treatment of Castro and of the troubled history of a small nation often caught between two struggling superpowers, whether it was Spain and the US or Russia and the US. I think he captures the essence of Castro's adventurer friend Ernesto Guevara (a murdering dilettante who has, amazingly, become a cult hero in death mainly because of his looks and a good press agent named Herbert Matthews)and of his effeminate brother Raul as well. I have spoken with Jose Pardo Llada, who was an early supporter of Castro and knew him intimately for many years. Pardo is also one of the main references used by Quirk (he uses Pardo's "Fidel" and "El Che" extensively, for example, in the early chapters) and Pardo feels that Quirk has captured the leadership styles of Castro quite well. Yes, the man is charismatic but also highly erratic and given to extreme highs and extreme lows. He is also very, very clever and knows how to use the stage to his benefit. These are Castro's qualities and behaviors, and Quirk does a solid job in capturing and describing them.
I particularly like the analysis of Castro's youth and of the environment from which he emerged. Three rather clear elements seem to define his personality and Quirk highlighted them indirectly: the anti-americanism that he witnessed in his home as a child (his father came from Spain as a raw recruit to fight the Americans); his Galician ancestry, which subjected him to the ridicule that all "gallegos" in Cuba have had to endure; and his rural (guajiro) upbringing, which again pitted him against the more cosmopolitan young people he would meet in Havana's Belen School and who were sure to let him know he was not one of them.
On the charge that Quirk is biased (presumably against Castro and pro USA), I am not sure where that evidence is. The segments about the CIA and their role in trying to dislodge Castro are brutally honest and unbiased, in my opinion. It certainly makes the CIA look very human, if not downright bumbling and dogmatically arrogant. It is not very complimentary of US presidents either. And some parts of the book seem too formulaic, going day by day in rather tedious form and analyzing Castro's ten-hour speeches in way too much detail for my tastes.
But, undoubtedly, if you detest "patriotism" and Texan accents, and if you believe Communists and the European Left are the cat's whiskers, then you may not like the well-researched and documented facts in Quirk's book. Otherwise, it is excellent.

Quirk on Fidel Castro

Though a bit long and tedious 900 pages, this is an excellent comprehensive and well-organized biography of Fidel Castro: from the days of his childhood to his rise to power in Cuba and the world stage. Quirk's first chapter is probably the best 30-page narration of Castro's pre-revolutionary days, from his childhood in his father's affluent plantation, thru his Havana University days and initial affiliation with Eduardo Chibas' liberal flavored Orthodox Party. Quirk tells us more about life at the Castro estates that by the 1920's, Castro's father had become wealthy, with close to 25,000 acres, one of the largest estates in Cuba. We learn that from childhood Fidel Castro respected and admired his father's strong macho and much feared persona and counted weapons as his most prized possessions- including rifles, pistols and shotguns. His life, as a child and as a revolutionary, was one long love affair with firearms and his speeches would have many references to blood and to the prospects of violence and death.

I was highly impressed with Quirk's narration of the early days of the Cuban Revolution (1959-60), a period when Fidel Castro deceived his liberal and moderate allies in the struggle against Batista back from the Moncada days in 1953, was able to form an alliance with the Communists starting in 1959, consolidating his power as defense minister and eventually having a strong enough power base by mid-1960 when he cancelled elections, suppressed freedom of the press, and started a campaign of property confiscation. Castro's interaction with high level cabinet members is covered, showing his micromanagement style and tendency to provide direction in capricious whims on anything from the agrarian reform to housing projects. Events in 1959-60, such as the cancellation of elections and the confiscation of private property, set up confrontations with the U.S., which resulted in the Bays of Pigs in 1961 and the Missile Crises in 1962. However, little mention is made of Castro's interventionism in Latin America starting in 1959. Quirk goes on to end with Castro's heady days of adventurism in Africa and to his authoritarian control of a country that he has wrecked politically and economically. As a matter of fact, Quirk's biography of Castro is one of the top recommendations in my book Memories from the Land of the Intolerant Tyrant (available from Blue Note Books).

Welcome addition

This is book is a welcome addition and sheds much needed light on the phenonmenon of Castro. It is thoroughly researched and quite lengthy-perhaps too much so however. After completing a masters degree in Latin American studies and pouring over the vast literature on Cuba, I definitely recommend this book but suggest reading others on the topic as well. Cuban studies is such a politicized field and it is remarkably difficult to find academics, pundits, and others writing in this area who aren't completely biased in one way or the other. In addition to this book, I recommend books and articles by Jorge Dominguez, who is probably the most noted scholar writing on Cuba today.

I loved this book

I loved this book! It holds true power and purpose! Recommend to all my friends and family!
I would recommend having a pen/highlighter present when reading this though! It makes it easier to take in it and really go back and reflect on the worlds. There are many powerful messages in this book!

A powerful guide to breaking down walls of inner resistance.

I felt quite bored when reading the first several pages of this book. Then the author began talking about the ego, page after page after page. This book talked about the ego, my ego, in more ways than I had previously ever imagined, confronting and exposing my precious ego. On at least a couple of occasions, I threw the book across the room into the wall. Then I became aware that this was exactly what I needed. I have never before read a book describing the human ego with such logical description. His work on the "pain body" is some of the most valuable work on understanding human relationship behavior that I have ever read. I strongly recommend this book for anyone that is willing to take another step in becoming honest with one's self.
