About the Author
T. Barry Levine, MD, FACC, is Chief Medical Officer, A.B.L.E. Medical Consulting. He is Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Levine received his medical degree from the Free University of Brussels and completed his residency in internal medicine at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. He was a cardiology fellow at New York University Medical Center and a research fellow at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. Dr. Levine has been recognized by his peers in “Best Doctors in America” and “Top Docs in Pittsburgh.” Dr. Levine has been principal investigator of and has participated in numerous clinical trials. He has authored many articles (139), and has created a variety of media presentations on coronary heart disease, heart failure, hypertension, dyslipidemia, arrhythmias, the metabolic syndrome, diabetes, sleep disorders, and pulmonary hypertension. He is a popular and sought-after public speaker to both lay and professional audiences. He has also served on editorial review boards, and has acted as an ad hoc reviewer, executive editor, and guest editor for various medical journals. He, along with Dr. Arlene B. Levine, has written A Patient’s Guide to Heart Failure and co-authored a textbook, Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular Disease (Saunders 2006). A second edition of this book is under contract with Wiley. Arlene Bradley Levine, MD, FACC, is CEO, A.B.L.E. Medical Consulting. Dr. Levine received her undergraduate degree in chemistry summa cum laude from Barnard College, Columbia University, and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She did her internship and residency training in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School. She was a cardiology fellow and junior faculty at the Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases. She has worked and done research as a physical chemist, an interventional cardiologist and as a heart failure and transplant cardiologist. Who says we can't all live to be 100?

Written by two distinguished cardiologists, this book explores the biochemistry of our lives at the cellular level: mitochondria, telemeres, longevity genes, adult stem cells, and cell protection mechanisms. The first half of the book lays it all out for us. The descriptions are intricate and you'll need to read slowly and absorb the information about how nitric oxide (NO) slows the aging process.

The second half of the book, "Live Long and Prosper," shows healthy sources of nitric oxide, plus simple techniques and practices to protect ourselves against disease, aging, and cancer.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to "Say NO to Aging."

Written for regular folks

Drs. Levine give real-life examples and entertaining but illustrative stories of how the body works and what to do to make it work better. They mention examples from movies, books, their friends and family. You get to know the authors a little, such as their German Shepherd dog also eats a healthy diet.

Every chapter is summarized with a list of bullets so if the descriptions of sub-cellular structures and biochemistry are too much detail, you can still get a lot out of it by reading the bullets.

The pun in the title is "NO" is the chemical designation for Nitric Oxide. It dilates blood vessels so that more oxygen and nutrients can get to all our cells. This book says our bodies can "make its own" nitric oxide from eating green leafy vegetables, exercise or just active living like doing housework, gardening or walking.

The last chapter is the 'how-to' part. What to eat, how much exercise is enough, other lifestyle choices. The goal is to stay healthy for as long as we live, instead of spending the final years being very sick, disabled and miserable.

What is the relationship between doing Zen and doing good? According to Bernie Glassman's Infinite Circle, they are inseparable. Glassman, a Zen teacher and social activist for three decades, uses the pages of Infinite Circle to explicate his philosophy, which unites diversity and oneness, or the relative and the absolute. For notions of the absolute Glassman turns to the Heart Sutra. For the relative, he explains the Bodhisattva Precepts. To reconcile these two realms, he tackles a brief but complex eighth-century treatise called The Identity of Relative and Absolute. Although the subject matter is challenging, the book is based on a series of lectures. Glassman, a former applied mathematician and aerospace engineer, keeps the tone conversational and works in examples from science and everyday life. For Glassman, enlightenment does not follow from doing Zen; rather, to be enlightened is to do Zen, and vice versa. Former abbot of the Zen Community of New York, Zen master Glassman (Instructions to the Cook) expounds upon three written works here. Though primarily for intermediate and advanced practitioners, some beginners may also find it helpful. The first half is devoted to the 24 lines of the Heart Sutra. So thorough is Glassman's explication that the title alone consumes 10 pages, many addressing the first word of the Sanskrit title, maha. Glassman was trained as a mathematician, a background that becomes evident when he uses the image of the circle: "If we are all within the same circle, then all of this is One Body; there is no outside. Since there is no outside, there is no inside either.... If there is no outside for the circle is infinite then not only is there no inside, there is also no circle anymore." The second section closely examines "The Identity of Relative and Absolute," a classic poem written by Chinese master Shih-t'ou Hsi-ch'ien exploring enlightenment, intimacy and the call to action. Action is of particular importance to Glassman, a cofounder of the international social activists' Zen Peacemaker Order. The third section examines the Bodhisattva precepts, with emphasis on "nonkilling." The author's style and thinking are like thick, polished glass: clear, compact and strong. Marrying metaphor, illustration and abstraction, he reaches to the heart of many essential concepts, reminding us firmly that, among other things, "we don't practice to become enlightened... we practice because we are enlightened."

Infinite Circle: Teachings in Zen

This amazing little book is anything but little. It invites us into a world both familiar and inconceivable, and points to a practice which makes a difference in the world around us as well as within. Starting with the Heart Sutra, Roshi Bernie takes us into the relative realities we encounter moment by moment to the absolute oneness of life. Next, his commentary on The Identity of Relative and Absolute, presents the inseparability of the two seemingly opposite domains, and the implications of that . Finally, examining the Bodhisattva Precepts, he opens the aspects of the life of zazen in the everyday world. A wonderful wellspring to return to over and over again. Each reading a new reward.

Tetsugen spells it all out

Bernie Glassman is one of the greatest American Zen teachers. In this book, he goes deeply into some core teachings of Zen. He starts with the Heart Sutra (Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra). When I started attending a Zen temple, the nightly chanting of this sutra always confused me, but Glassman's line-by-line analysis shows how this sutra contains great wisdom, and makes understanding clearer.
His analysis of the precepts has been the most helpful to me. He explains the various ways of interpreting each precept, and demonstrates the need for balance. For instance, one of the precepts is non-killing. Some sects of Buddhism extend this to not killing insects and micro-organisms. Glassman explains that to understand this precept, we need not follow it to this level, but we must be aware of it, and try to cause less damage. The precepts, on some level, are an admonition to try our best, and Glassman's discussion will help us to be peacemakers in each moment of our lives.

Heart sutra explained

Any Zen student could benfit from reading Bernie's analysis of the heart sutra, which is the subject of the first half of this book. Bernie throughly analyzes the sutra somtimes going as far as to analyze every syllable of a word. This may seem like it could be very dull. 70 or so pages of analysis on a 24 line sutra might seem a bit excessive, but Bernie some how keeps it interesting.
Considering the importance of the heart sutra in Zen practice it seems to me this book should probably be considered for required reading for all beginning Zen students. All of that withstanding there is still the second half of the book in which bernie offers more of the same insights on the identity of relative and absolute and the bodhisattva precepts. This is good stuff and a pretty easy read so I'd highly recommend it.

The poems are loosely organized by theme, so Sitting Bull is side by side with Kipling and Shakespeare, and an African dirge from Lesotho is with "Morte d' Arthur." The glossy full-color paintings are intrusive (who needs an illustration with Hughes' wonderful poem "The Jaguar" ?), but the line drawings and spacious type will encourage kids to browse and stay and read aloud. Best Book for Bedtime Reading to Kids

I have 3 sons, ages 14, 12 and 8. When they were little, I read the usual baby books at bedtime -- and boy, did I get bored with Good Night Moon. I found this book of poetry in a bookstore and supplemented the usual bedtime books with poems from this collection. It was one of the best things I ever did. This introduced my sons to classics that I knew, like Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Hiwatha and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. As well as Shakespearen sonnets. And classics that I didn't know, like Xanadu and others. My boys loved it. I felt great that I was introducing them to timeless classics that are not read in school anymore.
I continued to read poetry to my sons as they got older. It was a good complement to chapter books. It kept me sane and they love to hear them.
I have looked at other collections but they just don't have this terrific selection of 'great' and 'funny' poems. I always came back to this book.
Lastly, this book makes a great gift to new parents. Someone will give them "Go Dogs Go" --- but no one will think to give them classic poems.

Most Amazing Collection of Poetry....ever!

I have given this book as a gift perhaps eight times now. It is without a doubt the most amazing collection of poetry...old and new, joyful and sad, silly and profound...that I have ever seen collected under one cover. I've taught English for 30 years and it still remains my favorite. It may appear to somehow be poems for children, but it is poetry for our entire lives. I love this book....

My only regret is that the publisher ceased publishing it in hard cover.....that was a beautiful edition. The current paperback is disappointingly small......still full of great poems, though.

Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer is director of archives at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and has unprecedented access to its 300,000 correspondence documents and 22,000 drawings. He has been a member of the Taliesin Fellowship for sixty years, was an apprentice who drew and studied architecture under Wright, and is author or editor of more than forty books on Frank Lloyd Wright.

Amazing and inspiring

This book is an entrancing, informative, amazing document. The author is utterly conversant with Wright's work and in this volume takes the absolutely brilliant approach of focusing on Wright's visualizations rather than the finished buildings, documented in so many other places. The result is an astonishingly powerful glimpse at Wright's creative process of architectural thinking. The images and text are incredibly rich, and it is a deligt to mine a single page, or to flip through for an overview. The connection between the drawings, which are themselves extraordinarily beautiful two-dimensional objects, distinctive in style, and the three-dimensional buildings they describe is fascinating. Wright's conceptual and creative capabilities are made abundantly clear and are astonishing. Reading this book left me with a truly uplifting sense of that the human mind can be capable of doing. Beautifully done; not expensive at all for what it is, and worth every penny.

This is an amazing book for the Wright fan!

Beautiful book. I'm fascinated by Frank's genius and loved seeing projects that never made it into reality and his own drawings and sketches. He was too far ahead of his time. If he were alive today he'd be bigger than Martha Stewart and would be a gazillionaire. Looking at his designs it's hard to believe they were created almost 100 years ago. Genius! If you love Frank Lloyd Wright you will thoroughly enjoy this book which offers another look into his artistic mind.

Daniel A. Wren, Ph.D., the University of Illinois, is David Ross Boyd Professor of Management Emeritus and Curator of the Harry W. Bass Business History Collection at the University of Oklahoma. He has served as President of the Southern Management Association,�Chairman of the Management History Division of the Academy of Management, is a Fellow of the Southern Management Association,�as well as�of the Academy of Management. Arthur G. The Evolution of Management Thought is a well-respected, seminal work in the field of Business Administration. Written in a clear, interesting, and easily readable manner, it covers the historical development of management theory from the pre-industrial age through the current era. The authors discuss the most influential leaders and thinkers of the various eras including McCallum, Babbage, Dupin, Taylor, Gantt, the Gilbreths, Ford, Drucker, Follett, Fayol, Barnard, and Deming, to name a few. They also provide a succinct yet precise account of Mayo and the Hawthorne Studies, and their effect on management thinking. This book is cited in many peer-reviewed articles and books discussing management theory, and its authors are considered leaders in the field. Excellent as a text book, or for anyone who wants to understand the historical development of management thought.

Very good text, but wish I could have gotten Kindle version

I'm using this textbook for a history of management and business thought independent study. I'm pretty happy with it--covers all the major issues, scholars, etc. in a very readable format. There is a fair amount of competition in this field with texts, and this one does a god job filling the bill. I do try to order e-versions of books for students as much as possible, so I wish it were available for Kindle...I was surprised that it was not.

Upon review of this entire book, I have gained a real fondation of how management evolved. The theories made by each of the contributors, are used by society in business today. Therefore, to understand the real history of where management began and see where it has evolved now will help managers, employees and organizations understand their roles and responsibilities in the work place today.

I recommend that readers who are in management positions read this book so that they understand where the need originated to have systems, processes and managerial roles in place so they can become more accountable. Also, organizations will appreciate their managers and employees more as they see how society has a need to feel secure on their jobs, especially when they know the effects of an unstable economy that took place such as the Great Depression. Lastly, employees need to read this book to gain a new repect for systems, processes and job performance so they understand their importance and reasons for them to exist in organizations. Also, so that they become energized and motivated to perform well and provide good customer service to their organization now that they understand their importance and real value.

A Classic on Southern Italy

"A Traveller in Southern Italy" carries on in the fine tradition of "A Traveller in Rome" and the imprecisely-named "A Traveller in Italy." Like them, "A Traveller in Southern Italy" is as entertaining as it is enlightening, and it is immensely sad that, unlike them, it is still out of print in the US (it is in print in the UK). I write this review in homage to a writer who has given me so much pleasure and in the hopes that his third Traveller book on Italy will be reprinted in the near future.
In case you're new to H.V. Morton, you should be aware that his "Traveller" books are not traditional guide books, but rather accounts of his travels into which he seamlessly weaves descriptions, observations, and fascinating history. For example, his discussion of Mount Vesuvius begins with an amusing account of his arduous trek up to the top, proceeds to a reflection on how modern man is tougher than his ancestors (the young Goethe was pulled to the top hanging onto the belt of a guide), detours to a pleasant Vesuvius story concerning the 18th century Mrs. Thrale, and concludes with a dramatic description of Vesuvius's eruption as seen through the eyes of Pliny the Elder, who died trying to rescue Pompeians by ship. I read this book before a trip to southern Italy last fall and was glad I did. Morton's wonderful narrative on Paestum gave life to my trip to this lovely 6C BC Greek site south of Salerno, his insights into the Neapolitan persona delighted me, and his account of Cumae, the very ancient shrine of the Sibyl, beckoned to me. However, because the book was first published in 1969, there are some lacunae in it: for example, his account of Reggio di Calabria lacks a description of the magnificent 5C BC bronze Riace Warriors which were pulled out of the Mediterranean in 1972 and which would surely have made Morton swoon if he ever saw them.
This argues strongly for supplementing your research with, say the Michelin Green Guide. But if you can get your hands on a copy of this splendid book by H.V. Morton, you will find that reading it is like taking a vacation in your armchair.

MOrton's books are so hard to find and since they were republished, more people will be able to discover his talent with another type of guide to many places in the world. Very informative and full of facts and history.

Absolutely the best!

Absolutely the best learning tool for Latinos (or really anyone) to master real-life English. It's a picture dictionary with images grouped by theme, and definitions/descriptions of the images written below in English and in Spanish. I used it my first year of teaching English to Latino adults in a job-readiness program, then hauled them back and forth with me to the local community college when I started teaching there. I like that the vocabulary is taught in groups of words where appropriate, because this is how we actually use them. Looking at the pictures while reading the words increases retention and understanding at all levels, as does seeing the words and images grouped by usage rather than alphabetically. If you are a teacher or tutor, check out the questions at the bottom of most pages - they can spark an entire discussion or writing activity to enforce the words covered.

Adults and children love to use this book, and I find myself reviewing pages on work-related verbs from time to time to keep my Spanish updated. There are entire pages devoted to various USEFUL topics such as landscaping tools, medical supplies, classroom phrases, emotions, phrasal verbs, outdoor games types of buildings - just about any topic you'd want to teach or learn. These books go perfectly with the entire Side-by-Side teaching series, but you could also use them with any other resource. I own most picture dictionaries on the market, and these are the ones that I'd miss if I lost them. These are the ones my students reach for, too.

Missing the second CD

I LOVE this CD for the music used to teach adult ESL! There was a CD that provided worksheets that went along with each song in a 2006 or 2007 version I borrowed from a school's store room. ( We can't find it now) I wish this purchase had included the extra CD with worksheets I know exists somewhere with the songs. That's what I had expected to get in one package.... The songs alone are great, but now I have to make up my own vocabulary/grammar practice sheets to go with each song. Also, this purchase does NOT include the lyrics to each song; ONLY the music to the songs is shipped on one CD. If anyone knows where I can find the second CD that goes with these songs and provides practice sheets and lyrics for each song, I would love to find that ISBN number!! I think for 25 dollars I should have received both CDs.

I am a self studying Korean learner. I very much recommend this book as a stepping stone tool, especially if you have already grasped the Hangul alphabet and can tie it in with making some words as there are no Romanizations available or any CD that you can follow and learn along with. I still purchased this more as a second step for reading and learning a variety of words. Some of the sections in book include: personal info, family, health, everyday activities, hobbies, money numbers calendar clothes colors foods, home school job travel entertainment nature, shopping travel and descriptions. I also bought McGraw-Hill's Korean Illustrated Dictionary http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071769005/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i04?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which does have Romanizations (if you are looking for a good beginners dictionary-with CD) as a 1st dictionary and Word by Word for the 2nd one. Hope this helps
