About the Author
Jane Piper Clendinning is professor of music theory at the Florida State University College of Music. She has published articles reflecting her interests in the history of theory, theory and analysis of twentieth-century music, computer pitch recognition, and computer applications in music. Her current research interests include theory and analysis of popular and world musics. She has served as the chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee and as an AP reader, and is a regular consultant at AP workshops and summer Institutes.

Elizabeth West Marvin is professor of music theory and former dean of academic affairs at the Eastman School of Music. She has published in the areas of music cognition, music theory pedagogy, theory and analysis of atonal music, contour theory, history of theory, and analysis and performance. She is past president of the Society for Music Theory and is currently co-chair of the Advanced Placement Music Theory Test Development Committee. Marvin is the 2012 recipient of the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Music Theory Teaching and Scholarship.

But the elder Mancini's dream ended on a battlefield in November 1944, when fragments from a German mortar shell nearly killed him. Almost four decades later, Ray promised to win the title his father could not. What came of that vow was a feel-good fable for network television. But it all came apart November 13, 1982, in a brutal battle at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Mancini's obscure Korean challenger, Duk Koo Kim, went down in the 14th round and never regained consciousness. Three months later, Kim's despondent mother took her own life. The deaths would haunt Ray and ruin his carefully crafted image, suddenly transforming boxing's All-American Boy into a pariah

Not only is the book entertaining, the man was too. He was a great story teller, and a great patriot. I remember the time he told me about treating a dancing bear in a cage at a bar somewhere in NYC (1930's). He couldn't figure how to get into the cage, administer to bear, and not be mauled. His big idea was to call the zoo and stand by to assist. The zoo sent over a young, slight of build, female veterinarian. She step into the cage, gave the bear a shot you-know-where, and promptly left. He was so entertained by this event. Here he was, a big tough NYC NG Captain/ experienced Vet, and this competent young vet just handed him his hat. Female doctors of any kind where so rare in the 30's, that this young lady from the Bronx Zoo made the moment that much more memorable.
I would go on calls with him, sometimes. One client would be a primadonna in a triplex overlooking Central Park, and the next would be to a waitress living in a one room apartment over a bar working three jobs to feed her 27 cats.
Today he is taking care of heaven's cats.

A touching autobiography and lots of cool cat stories

The late and dearly missed Dr. Camuti talks about his veterinarian practice in the big city, which concentrates on cats but which includes all sorts of other fauna. His stories are as much about the animals' kooky owners as the animals themselves, showing a touching side of wackiness. There are some famous people in here, but plenty of nearly-anonymous commoners as well.
His writing style is approachable and easily read, and the stories are unique -- you won't have seen anything like these elsewhere. This is not your typical "cat stories" book, all treacley and preachy and maudlin. This is a straightforward guy telling straightforward "no [kidding], there I was"-style war stories, and sounding just like a prototypical NYC veterinarian should.
Do be careful about adopting his advice, of course. Nowadays, we know feeding cats only ground beef is Very Bad For Them, and certainly we have no need of quarterly vitamin shots. This is 1950s medicine, with all that entails.

Don't let Dr. Camuti fool you- he's a charmer!

And so are the many cats that populate his memoir. Written in a down-to-earth, practical manner without any of the gushiness that seems to plague most animal-themed stories lately, Dr. Camuti's love and dedication to animals really shines through in this book. His cat stories are colorful and amusing but also very real- not all owners pay attention to his advice or to their cats, not all cats get well- but that realism makes his stories that much more touching. Also worth reading for the glimpse into New York City life at that time period- Dr. Camuti worked with lots of the celebrities of that era (or, should I say, he worked with their cats). I'd buy copies of this book for all my cat-appreciative friends if I could- it's just that good.

I never picked up on the fact that many of the poverty factors that were at play when it came to raising my stepchildren were also at play in my marriage, until I read Crossing the Tracks. Having attended Ruby Payne s training, I found the information to be very interesting, not just from the standpoint of being a teacher, but also as a step-mother who had two stepchildren living with her at the time. Until I had the Ruby Payne training, I could not understand why I felt I had failed with both of these young people. The training opened my eyes to the hidden rules of poverty and of the middle class, and made me understand why the children did not value what I valued. I shared what I had learned with my then husband (the children s father) who was a truck driver (from Indiana) who was not home very much. I also shared it with my husband s mother, paternal grandmother of the children. They were not nearly as struck by the information as I was. After the Ruby Payne training, I understood that Kent s first wife came from generational poverty. When Kent and I met and married, she and Kent s three children were back living in poverty. I learned through reading Crossing the Tracks that Kent also had poverty in his background and that is why he had so much trouble with my Middle class ways . Kent s mother once told me that I must have come from a rich family. I never thought of myself as rich I just thought of myself as middle class. Race is a big elephant in this room

This is an interesting book for some big themes but in general it feels more like stereotypes, and stereotypes from a different part of American than here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Is it east coast maybe? I don't know. But a lot of the poverty and middle class expectations in the the Bay Area are markedly different if you're black vs. white vs. Asian vs. Hispanic, and even those groups have different expectations within them. Filipinos are not Chinese and Mexicans are not El Salvadorans.

As an example, it has been an article of faith for generations of black families here that one *must* own some real estate in order to be secure. I don't know where it came from, and it drives me crazy as a financial professional because it's not always the best financial decision in a bubble market, but there it is. (The white middle class counterpart I run into is that one must max out one's 401(k) if possible, even when there are better strategies for your particular scenario or when the 401(k) options in your plan are horrendous.)

So I am enjoying thisbook but I am getting more sceptical as I read along. It is starting to remind me of that series (which I love) called "The Xenophobes Guide To.... " They're fun because they are stereotypes but they can't really be used except as factors in the back of your mind.

love book, not title

this book is great although the title may offend some people. the books contents do not reflect any offensive thoughts and has little to nothing to do with "crossing the tracks" but is very helpful and insightful for relationships as well as working with those who grew up in different areas or reared in different settings. it is very good and was great to read along with her other book, " a framework for understanding poverty." i highly recommend both books

About the Author
Michael Perryman spent 2010 as a Distinguished Visitor at the University of Heidelberg and at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg. During an extensive career with the European Space Agency, he was the scientific leader of the Hipparcos space astrometry mission, a project which has provided a unique observational foundation for many aspects of exoplanet studies. He was Professor of Astronomy at Leiden University, The Netherlands, between 1993 and 2009. He chaired the influential European Space Agency-European Southern Observatory (ESA-ESO) working group on extra-solar planets in 2005, and has served on various national working groups and strategy panels for the future development of exoplanet research.

An extremely useful reference for any exoplaneteer. A comprehensive
review of all exoplanet literature to date. Compared
to the other essential book, Exoplanets (Seager), this volume is
shorter, more unified, and more encyclopedic. Exoplanets (Seager) is
more pedagogical, more concerned with fundamentals and
less concerned with a comprehensive review of the current literature
(and it is also cheaper). Put both on your bookshelf.

The perfect book for my exoplanet lectures

Prof. Perryman's new book is an enormous achievement. Already in its first weeks it has proven to me to be an excellent reference book, from the details of observational techniques, formation and evolution of planetary systems, to planet interiors and atmospheres. It will be perfect for my exoplanet lectures!

A handbook worthy of the name

This remarkable compilation brings together observations and theoretical explorations of a rapidly growing astronomical field - extrasolar planets. Literally every possible observational method is explained and recent results given. These include radial velocities, astrometry, transits, microlensing, timings, and imaging. The level is quite technical (I find myself using the book in my ongoing research), but a motivated armchair amateur astronomer could derive much from the very helpful overviews and introductions to each chapter. Of possibly equal value to the practicing astronomer, areas not yet fully understood are clearly identified. While the number of known exoplanets changes weekly, the methods through which we discover and characterize these do not. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Sogyal Rinpoche was born in Tibet and raised by one of the most revered spiritual masters of this century, Jamyang Khyentse Ch�kyi Lodr�. With the Chinese occu-pation of Tibet, he went into exile with his master, who died in 1959 in Sikkim in the Himalayas. After university studies in Delhi and Cambridge, England, he acted as translator and aide to several leading Tibetan masters, and began teaching in the West in 1974. Rinpoche sees his life's task as transplanting the wisdom of the Buddha to the West by offering training in the vision set out in The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. This training can enable those who follow it to understand, embody, and integrate Buddhist teachings into their everyday lives.

Rinpoche's reputation as an authority on the teachings associated with The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying and his dialogue with leading figures in the fields of psychology, science, and healing make him a sought-after speaker at international conferences and lectures. He travels extensively, teaching in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, and is the founder and spiritual director of Rigpa, a network of Buddhist centers and groups around the world.

Temporal nature of existence and perspective

Thought provoking and shattering insights to break you free from limiting thoughts. This is a wonderful collection of Tibetan "koans" to free our thinking. I found it shook the foundations of my limited perspectives and made me question the true reason for my human existence. Rinpoche opens our mind to the temporal nature of existence and inspires to prepare for our next existence.

Subtly effective

I try to read the glimpse each day when I get up (and sometimes the night before), and have found the experience helpful. I have yet to develop strong discipline in my practice, and find it easy to get caught up in life for days or weeks at a time. Reading a couple paragraphs (the glimpse for one day) has been like a bell calling me back to myself. I wouldn't be surprised to be reading this book for the next 20 years as my understanding deepens.
