Lourdes Tirouvanziam -Louis holds Masters degrees in French and English and a PhD in sociolinguistics. She taught languages at the Lyc�e Fran�ais of Pondicherry. The French government has honoured her with the distinction of Chevalier des Palmes Acad�miques. She and her husband, Dr Bernard A. Louis, live in Pondicherry. They have two children settled abroad.

My heart be still

As four recipes from this book bubble away, on my stove, I can say I'm loving this book. I'm tempted to give this book a one star, in hopes of keeping the secret to myself, but it would be unfair to its amazing author. I received a copy of the French edition a year ago, and have spent agonizing hours on google translate re-writing the recipes. This English version (with pictures!) is a god-sent. Love it, and thank you Lourdes :)

Great Indian/French fusion cook book that's a must have!

We all come across many Indian cook books but this is one of a kind! The author has stayed true to tradition and is authentic Pondicherry cuisine. The dish names are what the locals call in Tamil/French. The recipes are simple and easy to follow. They brought home memories growing up in my home town,Pondicherry. A must have in my opinion. Nice gift to your friends and family for any occasion!

About the Author
Robert Arp, Ph.D. is a Philosopher and Ontologist with the Analysis Group, LLC. He has a Ph.D. in Philosophy and has taught philosophy and related courses since 1996 at St. Louis University, Webster University, Jefferson College and Lewis and Clark Community college, among others. Dr. Arp has written extensively on the topic of philosophy in the form of books, anthologies, and articles.

Jamie Carlin Watson, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Young Harris College. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy, and has taught philosophy and related courses at Florida State University, Barry University, Florida A&M University, and the University of Montana.

That is just sloppy. The lack of functional index renders the book of lesser value to me, as I intend to use it in support of the book i use in the philosophy course I am teaching.

It's okay, and I like it! (revised)

An honest book at a cursory look into philosophy, but doesn't really cover all of philosophical thought that I was expecting. For example, existentialism, moral absolutism, stoicism, descriptive ethics, and instrumentalism. I would have preferred to read about them. It was great at looking at certain topics, such as logic and ethical reasoning; furthermore, it does better job than other introductory books that I have read at looking at both sides of philosophical points. At certain parts there was some hints at biases and some self-endorsement, particularly at the back of the book, however this is a given in most books. - at the end it does a decent job as an introduction to philosophy, but lacks in certain places.

About the Author
Joyce VanTassel-Baska is Professor Emerita at The College of William and Mary, where she founded the Center for Gifted Education. Formerly she initiated and directed the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University. Joyce has also served as state director of gifted programs in Illinois, a regional director, a local coordinator of gifted programs, and a teacher of gifted high school students. Her major research interests are in the talent development process and effective curricular interventions with the gifted.

She is the author of 22 books and has written more than 500 other publications on gifted education. She was the editor of Gifted and Talented International for several years and received the Distinguished Scholar Award in 1997 from the National Association for Gifted Children and the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia in 1993. She received the Distinguished Alumna Achievement Award from the University of Toledo in 2003, the President's Award from the World Council on Gifted and Talented in 2005, and the Collaboration and Diversity Service Award from CEC-TAG in 2007.


Tamra Stambaugh, Ph.D., is a research assistant professor of special education and director of Programs for Talented Youth at Vanderbilt University. Her current research interests include the impact of accelerated curriculum on student achievement, teacher effectiveness, and talent development factors-especially for students of poverty.

It really is a "Beginners Guide to Whittling.

Good if you are a young beginner.

This book is, as the title says, for a beginner. Seemingly it was written for children to read, as there are references like cleaning up after yourself so your parents will let you keep carving. It's basic, but if you know a kid who is looking to try whittling, it's a good starting point and would make a good gift. (Combine it with an Old Timer or Swiss Army pocket knife, and you're on a sure fire winner.)

While it wasn't any use to me as a carver, I do think it holds merit for its simplicity and straightforward approach. It's basic carving, and the project within is a great little starter. Little tricky in spots, but good for building confidence in young ones. (I'll not tell you what the project is, you'll have to buy it to find that out!)

Good read if you like technology

I have yet to find a textbook I liked, but this one isn't half bad. This is probably the best one I've read after over 100 credits. I do have a bias that I really like technology and find it interesting. If you like computers this textbook can be interesting, if not you picked the wrong class.

The real world examples are great and really help you understand how the topics connect to today's business world. This book is also very current with an entire chapter dedicated to Facebook and another for Google. And if you ever wanted to know how the internet really works, you'll actually understand after reading this book. I found the explanations of technology to be very easy to understand as well. The biggest strength of this book is the style of writing. It's not overly wordy or complicated (to me), just written in English as though the author was having a conversation.

I'm not sure what book the other reviewer was reading but I seem to have had the exact opposite experience. There are lots of subtitles, bold words, and vocabulary definitions. There are also review questions at the end of each chapter (which is where my professor got most of his test questions). I also have the black and white version, and the pages are made of standard book paper and are not at all shiny, which is great.

Only read excerpts, but looks really promising!

I stumbled across an online version of this book, which allowed you to print off individual chapters, when I was trying to find something to help my non-techie manager understand terms like "application servers" and "web services" and all of that. It's hard to judge as I'm a techie, but it seemed to present the material in a straight-forward (if not at times perhaps a touch TOO simplistic) manner.

I read another section of a chapter about web site vulnerabilities, as our manager was having a hard time understanding why there might be security aspects with our code -- his logical assumption from a non-technical background was that you had to tell the system what you wanted to do, so you didn't have a lot of options.

I've not read the whole book, but the sections I went looking for seemed like they would be useful in presenting information to a manager who wanted to learn more, but wasn't sure where to look. There are sections on social media, distributed applications, e-commerce systems, what exactly programmers do when they 'write software', what open source software is and why it is, databases, cloud computing, and more.

So worth a look, in terms of content, I think.

Essential reading

I've read several chapters of this book and it does a great job of explaining information systems for anyone who might not have a strong IT background. The book uses relevant real-world examples that students will finding interesting (i.e. the chapters on Netflix and Facebook). As a current MBA student, this book has helped me tremendously to tie together aspects of IT and management that will undoubtedly play a role in my future career. I also appreciate that it is written in a very engaging style that keeps you entertained while learning. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to better understand the impact of information systems / information technology in the real world.

A good quality history.

This book is an acceptable introduction to the history of the area for those without previous knowledge. It is somewhat frustrating if, like myself, you are interested in only one country in the region. It has the usual advantages and limitations of this genre of "summary of history" books.

Excellent general guide for appellate practice, but...

If you're a trial lawyer handling your first appeal, you should absolutely read this book cover-to-cover. I've practiced solely appellate law for ten years, seen hundreds of appellate arguments, written hundreds of briefs and argued nearly a hundred cases, attended national trainings on appellate practice, and taught hundreds of new attorneys how to handle their first appellate case. I agree with almost everything the authors have to say-- and what credible authors!

My disagreements:
1) Never summarize your case in the "conclusion" section of the brief. They advise this, and note that many disagree with this. I emphatically disagree with it. A conclusion in the body of the point, at its end, may do very well, but the so-called "prayer for relief" section needs to be one sentence that says precisely what you want the court to do, and nothing else. This way the court knows exactly where to flip to find the remedy you're requesting, and doesn't have to parse a page of text to find it.

2) "And its progeny" is hackneyed? What are you supposed to say? This case and all the cases which grew out of it? Sprung from it? Were decided after it and based on it in some way? Terms which they call "hackneyed" are often the quickest and most precise way to phrase something. So just ignore that paragraph.

3) They "skirt" the issue, by failing to skirt the issue, of women's dress. They only say, "wear dark colors." The new female attorneys do not believe me when I say judges expect them to wear skirt suits to court. I've seen women show up in red shirts under striped pantsuits worn with sandals. They believed they looked professional, but really, they had lost ten points in credibility already. It would have been nice to have a Supreme Court justice address female dress in the courtroom.

4) Quoting. They give the impression that you should never quote, and you should always paraphrase. I disagree. In my opinion, you should have a quote for the standard of review, and a quote for everything that might be controverted. I will summarize general case law into a nice smooth paragraph. But the standard of review is always a series of quotes and cites, and anything that I think the judges might doubt I quote (e.g., if a juvenile invoked right to counsel before being certified, that invocation went poof after they were certified, so until it was reasserted, the cops were free to read him his rights and question him-- that needs quotes.)

5) Sexist language. They disagree on how to deal with this. What you can't do, with all due respect, Justice Scalia, is use "man" for everything, because then you sound like one of those 1950's women-hating guys in horn-rimmed glasses. All the women in the room will think you a caveman. Most sexist language can be avoided easily and grammatically. Where it can't, I find it helpful to just use the gender of the main party in the controversy.

6) Drafting the brief. They assume you have a month to work on your case. They might as well advise you to have your fairy god-mother finish it for you. So, follow their advice, but squeeze it into the three days you actually have. E.g., instead of writing out an outline of your entire case, when you start your point, write your point relied on, then make a descriptive heading for each section of your case (e.g., Facts, Standard of Review, Law on admitting a breath test, the state failed to lay a proper foundation for the admission of the test results, the other evidence failed to prove intoxication, conclusion.) Then you've outlined your case and written your headings all at once.

7) In a criminal case, it's perfectly fine for the state to call the appellant, "the appellant," throughout the case. It's not "too cute," as the authors say, because the state is always "the state," so their side is already depersonalized. And, it makes it really easy for the appellate court to remember who's who.

8) Never use footnotes for anything you want the court to read. I completely agree with Scalia's writing on this issue.

9) In oral argument, if you're through, you need to sit down. Now. They talk about having a big lengthy end summary. That may be required in the United States Supreme Court, but it's pretty ridiculous elsewhere. My shortest argument was forty seconds long. (Yes, I won, and yes, they were visibly relieved.) I almost always leave half or more of my time unused. And do, do, do, say, "If there are no further questions," pause briefly and make eye contact with all judges, "we ask that you" and state what you want the court to do (remember that one sentence in your prayer for relief?). That's a much more effective close to your argument than trying to summarize your whole case for judges who just wish you'd sit down.

So, I say definitely read this book-- even experienced counsel will find something in it that can improve their practice. But also realize this book is written for a general appellate audience, and especially the US Supreme Court, and therefore needs to be tweaked to fit practice in your specialty.

Persuasion from a legal point of view

I am not a lawyer, but I love reading about persuasion and influence. This book caught my attention out of left field, but it certainly added a lot of value to my understanding of persuasion from a logical and argumentative point of view.

Most of the books I've read on persuasion focus on the emotional appeals that move people and mention that you need to give a rational argument for the decision so the persuadee can feel good about it. This book teaches you how to make that rational argument, but it does more than that. It teaches you how to frame the argument before it is made so that it will be more persuasive when it is made. The portion focused on the development of the syllogism was particularly interesting.

Definitely a book that you will want to read whether your are in the legal arena or not - if you want to know how to influence and persuade.

If you need to persuade a judge, you need this book

Whether or not you agree with Justice Scalia's opinions from the Supreme Court, this book as a primer on briefs and oral argument is excellent. I wish that I had this book for moot court. The brief writing section was far better than any of the books I had to help me. The oral presentation section identified solutions to problems that frustrated me. If you are not a lawyer you will likely find the oral argument section interesting and helpful, but find the minutia of the brief writing section boring. As a lawyer, I will reread this book from time to time.

Justice Scalia recognizes there are other viewpoints; he discusses them but then explains why his view is better.

The book presents all viewpoints and follows with their own and why theirs is better. For example, the book points out that although they believes underlining is a crude throwback to the typewriter , Bluebook approves the use of underlining. The book states that underlining is unnecessary in the 21st century with a word processor. They follow with suggesting that Bluebook should be revised. The book suggests using italics where you would have used underlining. They add that very limited use of italics is far better than liberal use. Justice Scalia's differences of opinions extend to his coauthor.

Bryan Garner, author of Garner's Modern American Usage, The Elements of Legal Style and editor in chief of Black's Law Dictionary did not agree with Justice Scalia on all points. Some section headings state a definite rule, followed by "or not." For example: "Consider using contractions occasionally--or not." These sections take the form of majority opinion vs. minority opinion. Mr. Garner's opinion is presented, Justice Scalia follows with his opinion and his analysis on why Mr. Garner was wrong and why Justice Scalia is right.

The book is organized logically, and with brevity.
The book in its 245 pages discusses:
* the general purposes of oral argument,
* legal reasoning, brief writing, and finally
* the crafting of the oral argument itself.

It discusses these topics more thoroughly than some books that are three times its size. Subsections have a clear heading and to the point discussion. Most subsections, although fully treated, are one to two pages long, some less than a page.

Finally
The book shows how to tailor your arguments for a singular audience, the judge, distinguished even from arguing before a jury. It gives tactics to use with difficult judges, lazy judges, and their law clerks. It gives the view from the bench when the lawyer reacts to bad questions from the judge. It describes the likely outcomes, and it offers way to avoid confrontation, while still making your argument. It is a good book.

In this book, Gerhard Richter explores the aesthetic and political ramifications of the literary genre of the Denkbild, or thought-image, as it was employed by four major German-Jewish writers and philosophers of the first half of the twentieth century: Theodor W. Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Ernst Bloch, and Siegfried Kracauer. The Denkbild is a poetic mode of writing, a brief snapshot-in-prose that stages the interrelation of literary, philosophical, political, and cultural insights. Richter’s careful analysis of the linguistic characteristics of this mode of writing sheds new light on pivotal concerns of modernity, including the fractured cityscape, philosophical problems of modern music, the experience of exiled homelessness, and the disaster of Auschwitz. Thought-Images not only reorients our understanding of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory in important ways but also establishes significant links between these writers and contemporary French thinkers such as Jacques Derrida.

Required Reading

Any reader of the Frankfurt School knows that many of their books are basically collections of short aphoristic writings. There is a first order difficulty in interpreting these works. Is each aphorism meant to be read on its own? Does each build on the previous? How is the book to be understood as a whole? How does these books stand with their more commonly organized works?
In this book, Gerhard Richter returns to these works in an effort to revitalize the formal style of these writings--the Denkbild or thought-image. In masterful close readings of Adorno, Benjamin, Kracauer, and Bloch, Richter gives us a firsthand tour through the labrynth of the Denkbild and allows us to answer these questions of interpretation. Richter, through these chapters, shows himself to not only be a wonderful guide but a masterful writer of the Denkbild in his own right.
If you have never read the Frankfurt School, Richter's book would give you a great introduction, on par with Jay's Dialectical Imagination and Kellner's Critical Theory, Marxism, and Modernity. If you are schooled in the Frankfurt School, then, Ricther's book deepens your understanding of what is at stake in these friends' writing style. In a time where books on Benjamin and Adorno are more common than tabloid magazine titles, Richter's book is set apart. Moreover, he returns to the important work of Bloch and Kracauer--who are not as trendy these days. Bloch and Kracuaer are important associates of Benjamin and Adorno's and Richter is right to present them as members of the Frankfurt School.
Another interesting feature of Richter's book is that he makes connections between these writers and contemporary French theorists like Derrida, Levinas and Nancy. In that regard, Richter's book shows the affinities and dialectical possibilities between German and French thought, much like Jameson and Kellner have done.
I only have two quibbles with the book. The first is purely petty. In the introduction, Richter describes his book thus "Seeking to learn from the singular and the unverifiable, each of the chapters that follow proceeds by examining one or more Denkbilder composed by a particular writer associated with the Frankfurt School in relation to that writer's majro theoretical texts." And then, just a few lines down, he writes: "The third chapter considers Denkbilder from Kracauer's Weimar period...in relation to the theory of extraterritoriality developed in his philosophy of history and in relation to Derrida's monolingualism of the other." I thought Monolingualism of the Other was written by Derrida, not Kracauer! I wished the editor would have asked Richter to make the caveat that the Kracauer would be discussed in relation to Derrida. My second quibble is only slightly more substantive. If the French thinkers who are so popular today indeed have much in common with these Weimar period German thinkers, then, isn't the argument a bit stronger? Isn't it that the French thinkers of today have yet to say anything truly original but are merely repeating in more opaque language what Adorno, Benjamin, Kracauer, and Block grasped more dialectically decades before? It would seem that today's French thinkers do not have much in common with these thinkers but rather have much to learn from them.
All in all, Richter's book is required reading for anyone studying the Frankfurt School or any of its members. It sheds light on their peculiar style, and it provides commentary on their projects as a whole. Richter himself, it would seem, has revitalized the necesary dialectical magic of the Denkbild.
