Waste of time

I bought this book in anticipation of getting some helpful hints for the test. There are about 3 pages worth of information about the actual test. The rest of the book is about finding a job and how to pass an interview...which I didn't even read. It gives such suggestions as "get a good nights sleep" and "take your time on the test". What a waste of money...

Garbage Chinese translation.

Absolute rubbish. Don't waste your money. Obviously 99% of the content is regurgitated from a general template on any certified course. The translation is very poor and reads like the original script was written in chinese. How any publisher has the audacity to publish this drivel is beyond me.

Florence Barclay and her husband settled in Hertford Heath, in Hertfordshire, where she fulfilled the duties of a rector's wife. She became the mother of eight children. In her early forties health problems left her bedridden for a time and she passed the hours by writing what became her first romance novel titled The Wheels of Time. Her next novel, The Rosary, a story of undying love, was published in 1909 and its success eventually resulted in its being translated into eight languages and made into five motion pictures, also in several languages. According to the New York Times, the novel was the No.1 bestselling novel of 1910 in the United States. The enduring popularity of the book was such that more than twenty-five years later, Sunday Circle magazine serialized the story and in 1926 the prominent French playwright Alexandre Bisson adapted the book as a three-act play for the Parisian stage. Florence Barclay wrote eleven books in all, including a work of non-fiction. Her novel The Mistress of Shenstone (1910) was made into a silent film of the same title in 1921. Her short story Under the Mulberry Tree appeared in the special issue called "The Spring Romance Number" of the Ladies Home Journal of 11 May 1911.

A Timeless Romance

Written in 1910, THE ROSARY still proves to be a very successful story in the year 2003. By today's standards, it may be described as quaint but still very enjoyable. The writing is lyrical, descriptive, and charming; the love storyline is ageless.
The story revolves around Jane Champion and Garth Dalmain. Jane is talented, smart, good-natured and independent. However she is a unique heroine because unlike the female protagonists in many romance stories, Jane is described as homely-looking. She is also older than the hero, Garth - a vibrant, energetic, gifted, and extraordinarily handsome man.
The title refers to a popular song written in 1898 by composers Ethelbert Nevin and Robert Cameron Rogers. Garth realizes that he is in love with Jane after hearing her sing the song at a public performance. When he declares his love to Jane and wants to marry her, she turns him down, although she also loves him; Jane doesn't believe that Garth will be truly happy living with a plain-looking woman for the rest of his life. Broken-hearted, the two part ways but reunite, later, under sad and unexpected circumstances.
How do Jane and Garth finally accept each other? Writer Florence Barclay writes a story that makes you want to keep reading till you find out how the lovers reunite.
I first heard about THE ROSARY, a few years ago, on a T.V. program that reported a true story of a woman who always mentioned the book. A relative of hers decided to search for the then out-of-print book and give it to her as a surprise gift. Through what could only be described as a miracle, the relative eventually found the book. Fascinated with the story of the woman's attachment to the book, I decided to look for it. I couldn't find the book anywhere. Years later, I happened to mentioned THE ROSARY to a friend. Guess where she found it? On Amazon.com! I think it's great that anyone can find the book (and many other things) here!
If you like stories like Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility, you'll enjoy this tale. Reading THE ROSARY is like taking a breath of fresh air.

THE ROSARY AND OTHER BARCLAY BOOKS

This is not a review of THE ROSARY, but I have some knowledge of Florence Barclay and a list of more of her books. As a result of reading THE ROSARY in the mid 80's, I became a devoted Florence Barcly fan and have traveled to England several times, two of which I searched out some of her childhood haunts, and also homes that she owned when she was older.
Florence Barclay was born December 2, l862, in a little Surrey village in England. Her father, the Reverend Samuel Charlesworth, was Rector of the Anglican Perish there. When Florence was l8 years old, she married The Reverend Charles Barclay and took on all the responsiblities of a Rector's wife, including teaching a Bible class of l00 men, and playing the organ for services in the church, where she and her husband remained for 40 years. She bore and raised 8 children.
In her biography, she is said to have had a "firm faith in God, and in man's possibilities, which tended to bring out the best in others, the most joyous, the most true. It was precisely all this--her personality in short--which broke forth in her books and won for her a vast reading public that looked upon her as a friend."
THE ROSARY sold one million copies, and was translated into 8 languages. This was a remarkable number of books to sell in a day before high tech methods of marketing were developed. Florence Barclay died on March l0, l921, on her fortieth wedding anniversary.

Another Jane Eyre

Yes, the heroine is named Jane, she is plain, sensible, and very bright, though this one is exceedingly musical (Bronte's Jane was not). The hero is Garth, gorgeous, bright (perhaps not as mature as Jane and a bit more self-centered), and highly interested in the heroine, especially after she sings. Such begins the verbal tug-of-war brimming with wit and sexual tension.
Both have feelings for the other though Jane's homeliness is the obstacle that prevents immediate union. Garth, however, meets with an unfortunate accident which renders him, low and behold, blind. Convenient, eh? Garth's pride replaces Jane's looks as the romantic obstruction. What ensues is a heart-squeezing chain of events which have the reader rooting for the match like a ridiculous cheerleader.
While profoundly romantic, don't expect an x-rated sex scene. Afterall, the romance is that which preceeds the sex.

Islamic geometric designs are admired worldwide for their beauty and marvelous intricacy, yet they are seldom understood. In this handsomely illustrated volume, Eric Broug analyzes and explains these complex designs in their historical and physical context.

Broug shows how, over the centuries, craftsmen were able to adorn buildings with wonderful geometric patterns using the simplest of tools and without recourse to mathematical calculations. Design elements created from straight lines and circles were placed in grids and then repeated and varied to generate seemingly limitless arrays of breathtaking patterns.

Chapters are devoted to each of the main families of geometric design―fourfold, fivefold, and sixfold―and to the complex combined patterns. Readers can follow the design processes by which these patterns were created and even learn to reproduce and invent geometric patterns for themselves. Broug’s original drawings accompany photographs of mosques, madrasas, palaces, and tombs from the Islamic world, ranging from North Africa to Iran and Uzbekistan, and from the eighth to the nineteenth centuries. 800 illustrations in color and black and white

About the Author
Eric Broug, originally from the Netherlands, received his Masters degree in the history of Islamic art and architecture from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. He runs Broug Ateliers for Islamic Architecture, Arts and Crafts in Yorkshire, which creates contemporary Islamic art. He is the author of Islamic Geometric Patterns.

Exquisite Imagery

This book is amazing. I have had it for a couple weeks and find it hard to put down. It will appeal to anyone who loves Islamic art: the photographs are outstanding and it could be displayed on any coffee table with pride. Yet, for the artist and designer, it is a treasure trove of images and ideas. Broug meticulously analyzes every design, and there are instructions in the back of the book that show you how to recreate many of them.

I could also see this book (as well as Broug's "Islamic Geometric Patterns") being used by teachers: art teachers who want to introduce their students to Islamic design and math teachers who wish to bring geometry to life.

Monumental Resource

Eric Broug improves on his second work on the subject of Islamic Art.

There are not many resources on this subject and you would do well with this one. It is beautifully bound, on display in my home in fact.

The pictures inside do something I have never seen done: they show an image as an example of Islamic Art and then disect it for the artist informing them how it is done.

Illuminating and important insight into this fading artform.

Good investment

Well, it is only the Pakistan part of Hindukush. This is by far the best travel book about the region which I found to be the most challenging for trekkers of all the places I have visited. I used it on two journeys to the Karakorum. The book contains besides the obligatory historical and cultural insights the description of the most outstanding treks in condensed form. For me and I think for most trekkers, the most important informations are what the demand and the highlights of the tours are and how to get to it. If you have to turn right or left on a certain stage is not what you are going to read when you are already on the way. Much more important are good maps since there is also a deplorable lack of maps on this mountain area. This book has a good collection of drafts. But taken into consideration that the treks had been done by the authors it is sometimes a little disappointing that they missed to go more in detail. The number of days for a trek is very much depending on your physical fitness. I did all the treks in a shorter time than proposed, which should be known beforehand for better planning. Also that the authors did not dare to tell us more about their subjective impressions. If not here, where else? If you have not seen the Karakorum, you missed the most impressive mountain scenery Nevertheless it is the best what you can get about this remote and neglected mountain area.!

MUST BUY

This is the best buy and must buy guide book if you are traveling to this part of the world. That's all I can say. Have two copies cause you need one to be with you all the time when you are trekking in this area and the other one can be stowed some where safe. The reason I am saying it is because it is very hard to find one. And I am lucky that I got it.

Its expanded, special edition, which included the full contents of “The Americans,” as well as scholarly essays, facsimiles of contact sheets, photographer notes and correspondences, and other archival materials, functioned much like a massive and comprehensive finding guide, though limited to only one of Mr. Frank’s projects. A full and frank appraisal of the Americans

I was lucky enough to be given a copy of The Americans as a birthday present in 1960 and its always been one of my favorite photo books. Now, with this huge book, the original becomes even more fascinating and intriguing.

To be able to see Robert Frank's application to the Guggenheim, letters to Walker Evans and Jack Kerouac, a map and itinerary for the photo journey across America and his original working sequence of prints for the book puts the eighty-three photos in perspective. Sarah Greenhough's four essays (she is one of the seven contributors) puts him in the context of the Cold War and consumer culture times and I thought her essay about the opposition to The Americans particularly interesting (the Family of Man exhibition had a lot to answer for, though Frank had seven photos in it).

She also writes about various editions and the different printing techniques that were used. This turns out to be rather important because the viewer's perception of the photos can vary according to what copy they see. The original French and Grove Press editions were printed gravure and many of the photos were tightly cropped so that they were perceived as hard-edge images of America. Later editions, from Aperture (two) Pantheon, Scalo and Steidl sometimes used larger photos with less severe cropping. All of this is revealed in the back of the book with thumbnails of the original photos with repeats to show how the various editions presented their versions. The reality is that black and white prints cannot adequately be printed in one black pass through a press, to do it properly they have to be duotones or tritones. The Americans in this book look stunning as they are printed as tritones (probably from the same plates that Steidl used for a re-issue of The Americans in 2008).

The cherry on the cake for me with this book are the eighty-three pages of contact prints (done as duotones) with Frank's selection pulled out in the red grease crayon he used. How extraordinary to see alternate versions of photos that I've looked at over and over in the original book and to see more than 2500 negatives that he took in his travels.

Looking In is a remarkable (and beautifully produced) book that really does cover everything you'll need to know about a publishing event more than five decades ago.

BTW there is a paperback edition that does NOT include the contact prints, sequence and subsequent editions cropping pages or the correspondence and archive material. It is 144 pages fewer than this expanded edition.

An important supplement

By consensus Frank's The Americans is perhaps the most important photo book of the last half century even though those who don't have a clear sense of what was available before and after may not fully understand why. Indeed, his style (in its most generic sense) has become so mainstream or at least popular that his book seems quite tame, almost banal. Looking In (and the exhibit it references) is essential for understanding the context and influence of the Frank book. In the first instance it makes clear why so many of the photos in the Frank book are important and ultimately unsettling. There are lucid discussions of his choices in making, developing, and presenting the photos. It also provides a nice set of essays tracing Frank's career and the various journeys he took while making the photos. Essays on the folks who influenced him (especially Walker Evans) are quite illuminating. The volume also contains many of the pictures he took before The Americans, a bonus, as well as all those in The Americans. Thus for those who do not own the original book,this volume contains the original at relatively little extra cost (maybe $10) (but in a much larger and heavier format). The hardcover edition contains some extra material, mostly as I recall contact prints which allow comparisons of versions chosen for the book with similar ones not. For my purposes the paperback version contains the essential material and is much cheaper. The actual exhibit (which I saw in San Francisco and is now in NYC) did a nice job of explaining the sequencing of the photos (Frank was obsessed with this) and providing some insights into why certain photos are important. The exhibit notes were more focused that those in Looking In and I found the exhibit notes more helpful. However, bottom line is that this is essential reading (and looking) for anyone with more than a passing interest in modern photography, especially those who cannot see the exhibit.

A magnificent, scholarly edition of a classic

A wonderful edition of a classic. This book is bigger than a telephone directory, so the photos that make up the published version of The Americans are only a small part of it. Around those are many other images from Frank's early career, maps, the contact sheets from his three trips, and a good deal of other documentation. But the bulk of the book is made up by a series of very scholarly essays: on Frank's development before and after The Americans, on his connections with other photographers, with Kerouac and the Beat poets and so on. A more or less encyclopedic treatment.

Get it. It is an education in one volume.

A Classic is a Book You Come Back to Again and Again

We have celebrated dozens of Passover Seders with this simple, elegant book as a guide. While it's language may not be as poetic as some, it tells the story in a way that speaks to everyone from my 93 year old Grandmother to the youngest who stammers over the Four Questions, to the guest experiencing his or her first Seder. We have other hagadot, but this is the one we have adopted as our family's tradition.

Really Good Haggadah

My family has been using this haggadah for a few years and compared to others, I find it easy to follow and easy to amend to one's needs for any length seder. I will likely stick with this one indefinitely.
