`If your work becomes your passion, you will not spend a minute working'

Evan Deveraux has assembled one of the most practical manuals introducing the art of home photography. His manner of addressing the reader is that of a friendly coach. For an idea of how he addresses his topics, the following statement comes from his Epilog: `There are very few people who are blessed with natural gift for certain skills. And even those who are would always insist that their genius has only 1% of effectiveness when it comes to their work. They attain the position and name because they "work hard to get it". They continue to practice again and again until they master whatever it is they are practicing. Just as Einstein did, just as Michelangelo did and just as all other geniuses and experts out there do. And this is exactly what you have to remind yourself time and again. You have to continue practicing and experimenting with various lighting techniques and tools in order to be able to become a good photographer. I would suggest that you not only experiment with what you do, but also read up about the works of others. Look at their photos; check out their strategies and what methods they used to achieve what results. This will give you an idea about what things you can try and what your strengths are.'

That lets the reader know the extent of specifics covered, but the impressive aspect of this book is the manner in which Evan incorporates photographs to demonstrate every step he is discussing. It is a show and tell feature that truly makes following his instructions come into focus and print in the mind!
For the amateur this book is a must, for with it you have a ready reference manual for every situation that confronts you and the solutions on how to solve any problem. A Straightforward Approach to A Challenging Art

As a first-time photographer trying his hand at indoor work, I made a lot of mistakes. My son is a photographer and I always enjoy the photos he takes, so I decided to try my own hand at the craft. It's a heck of a lot more difficult than he makes it out to be, and without any knowledge of indoor lighting conditions, requirements, tips, and tricks, I was out of luck. This book seemed like a straightforward and specific resource that I could turn to when I wanted a quick lesson, rather than getting enrolled in a class and altering my schedule for a hobby.
I definitely appreciated how succinct most of the direction was, and for particularly challenging concepts, the author was quick to share video links and access points for other resources to improve my ability to use my camera and take great indoor studio-quality shots that would have been impossible a few months ago. I'm sure I'll turn back to this book plenty in the coming years, as it is precisely how an instructional book should be - compartmentalized, specific, simply explained, and linear. Thanks!

A little disclaimer first; I'm a videographer by trade and also work with still photography when requested. Over the years I've read many books and watched many video tutorials on lighting and technique. So when I saw the title of this book, I hoped it would REALLY delve into lighting techniques and provide lots of samples. Well, I was pretty disappointed. What you actually get is a somewhat decent overview of various types of lighting set-ups, with a single photo as an example for each and a few links to applicable YouTube videos. The text portion of the book is pretty basic, with really no personal advice or information. If you are brand new to lighting with no previous knowledge, then this would be an OK starting point. At the very least it can provide a guide to styles you may like and lead you to seek out further information, but ultimate it is not.
